Hi all, its time for my S60 D5 auto to be serviced and wondered if anybody could recommend an independent specialist in the Essex area ( i'm in Braintree ) thanks. Read more
This turned up in my inbox this morning - if anybody fancies chasing it they're welcome to, I don't think I'll bother... It says everything about second hand car prices that the temptation of a BMW alone is insufficient and they need a large cash wad too!

I won a HP 530 widescreen laptop last week after winning in a competition I didn't enter.
The letter nearly went in the bin, until I noticed that it was from the Post Office and in relation to being automatically entered into the competition.
Sure enough 5 DAYS LATER THE LAPTOP WAS DELIVERED!
Result :-)

The higher the cost of running a car, the more I will use it to get the most out of my motoring freedom. Hardly an incentive to leave the car at home is it, but then it's not really a green tax, just a cash cow for Labour Government Ltd.
Hey guys!
I'm after a litle advice please, the Mondeo has a decent patch of rust in the usual spot where the rear quarter meets the sill:-

[/IMG]
That patch was there when I bought the car but is obviously not getting any better, since the winter I have noticed that rust is also breaking out just above the rear bumper on both rear quarter panels. My eventual plan is to get these areas filled and resprayed, so firstly, can anyone recommend a good bodyshop in the North East that would be cheap for this particular job?
Secondly, what is the best way to rustproof the car once it's done? I'm thinking about getting a Dinitrol aerosol can to fill the doors whilst I get new speakers fitted but from reading a 2005 thread I see that it was suggested to top this off with body schutx, is this necessary inside the doors? Also, does anyone know if there is an access or drain hole for the sills?

That panel has been reprayed in the past so I suspect that this rust is a result of inadequate rustproofing when it's been patched back together.
Is that a particularly structual area? I didn't think it formed a part of the safety critical structure? I guess I'll get it checked sooner rather than later...
Hello chaps - I really need some advice
I have just acquired a T reg Mondeo with the 2.0 zetec engine. Has 153k on it, however it drives really well, and the engine sounds fine with no knocking or tapping. On inspection though, there was no oil showing on the dipstick at all. Popped some 5w-30 in it, and then some more, and eventually almost the whole can, but still reading empty on the stick. Definitely no leaks underneath. However, running the thing now results in horrific clouds of blue smoke.
Drove it ten miles and it was smoking so badly I got pulled over. Thus, I'm guessing it's for the knackers yard - however as it sounds and drives so well, I'm wondering whether it could actually be something wrong with the dipstick and I've ended up overfilling it? Or if it's something like the valve stem oil seals that used to plague Escorts? I'm stuck with the thing so if it's a feasible repair I may as well give it a go. Or is it just a dead engine... If have problem with low compression or your engine smokes and burns oil, then it's worth to try staff from this site: www.engine-recondition.co.uk Added it to my fifth car allready and gained same results as the ones before: no smoke and oil consumption what so ever! Can 100% recomend it as it saved me a money
Tried this on following cars:
* Vauxhall cavalier 1.7td (isuzu)1993
* Vauxhall combo 1.7d 1995
* BMW 320d 1999
* Mitsubishi Galant 2.0 petrol1999
* Honda Accord 2.0 Vtec (F20B6) 2002
All this cars had high mileage on their clocks and used a lot of oil (average 1liter every
600miles)
This is the D8A engine swap in a DHY 197 model. The engine settled in and I handed it over to my son, who reported in the second week that it was getting hard to start, so I advised him of the glo plug possible issue and to turn the key to preheat three times and i heard no more so I figured he had it sorted.
Then yesterday he called me from the country and said he had driven 600km without a miss and left the car standing for couple of days and then it just would not start.
Even using the three preheat cycles it would try to start and then stop.
To get him going I told him to turn on the key (which opens the stop solenoid) and hand prime the engine with the squeeze bowl.
This worked and it started.
He did say he had wet hands from fuel leaking from somewhere so I told him he needs to check that he does not have a leaking fuel line which would bleed air into the system.
He said that the car puffed black smoke during cranking and when it finally started it gave out some more black smoke.
He also said that when it tried to run and stopped something moved on the injector pump top (LUCAS). I was not aare of any solenoid that moved any arms/levers on the pump but then I never cranked it and watched at the same time.. Q? Does the throttle arm automatically open when cranking?
Anyone got some pointers as to how we can diagnose the problems, please give me check list that I can pass on.
If we check it in a local Peugeot dealer what things should we tell the service-manager?
My worry is next wekend they are parking it for a few days on a mountain above th snow line while they go skiing (Yes we do have snow in Australia) and if its parked ona slope of the mountain it might be difficult to extract.
If you roll a diesel down a hill in gear will the motor jump/roll/start easily (I hope thats not a dumb question)?
Cheers.

SPOT ON PETER.
Just had update the auto electrician found only 1 working 3 stuffed.
He said they had been in there for 10 years.
Charged $AU200 to supply and fit four new ones.
Unsure why he said that the four spares my son had from the DHY engine would not fit maybe different thread or depth, anyway my son says the engine starts like a petrol car now.
Thats a relief given they are driving to the snow fields Friday
cheers
I have heard about many problems with dual mass flywheels on diesel cars. I have a Yaris D4D (from new) with 52000 miles on the clock which has so far had only electrical problems . Has any one heard of dual mass flywheel problems with this engine? Sheldon Read more
yer it was a blown fuse, but rear oside indicator isnt opperating, must be a kinked wire or bad earth somewhere, the lot went down while i was looking it over, iam waiting for a haynes and owners manual
Had the car MOT'ed last week and it failed on the brake pipes. The work has now been done so just need to have it re-tested.
I checked the car's MOT history online and for the past three years it has had an advisory for brake pipes and suspension bushes. I replaced the suspension bushes 6 months ago as you could see the wishbones were about to snap off.
My gripe is for three years the car has had an advisory for both brake pipes and suspension bushes but the previous owner of the car choose not to have this work done. Surely they should be a system in the MOT which flaggs if the same adivosry was given the year before so the MOT inspector can use his discretion and fail it on the grounds that the plonker won't listen to a word he says as longs as he/she gets the MOT?
I have an advisory this year for two tryes as they are now down to 1.8mm, as soon as I get the new MOT the first thing I am going to do is change them as this is a safety matter. I also got an advisory for number plate discolouration - I shall not bother with that :p:/ Read more
I must be one of those plonkers as my Rover had advisorys for brake pipes for 3 years running :-) On the first one I took the advice that they need attention and hammerited them and greased them up once a year. They got no worse but the MOT still threw it up. It wasnt a safety issue otherwise it would have failed and I had my local garage have a look on a service to put my mind at rest.
Eventually I gave up and had new ones fitted, which are copper, so wont need to worry about that again.
I am thinking of getting a KIA CEED Estate, not a bad looking estate and the deals are not bad plus there a long warranty - but - is there anything else worth knowing ?
Whose owned a KIA and found out if the dealers are good.bad or whatever and are the cars as durable as (say) Vauxhall or Peugeot etc, I wont say FORD cos there naturally will be better than FORD. Read more
Regarding the underlying technology, Hyundai/Kia vehicles have been comparable in terms of actual quality to the mainstream manufacturers for quite a while now. It has just been the perceived quality (suspension setup to match European tastes, use of "tactile" plastics in the dash etc, "European" overall design) that has let them down. The Cee'd is effectively a Hyundai Elantra under the skin -- long considered a reliable car.
Now that the company has realised that it is necessary to spend the extra £2.50 in design work to get these areas up to scratch, they're finally convincing people.
I wouldn't be worried about durability.
Is there any real advantage in buying the higher spec (?) petrols like BP Ultimate ?
What do they do for the car to justify the extra cost of them. Read more
Several experiments by various institutes (including Top/Fifth Gear, Motoring magazines etc.) have confirmed that unless you drive a high performance sports car, premium petrol won't add any value!
