my partner and i run 3 older cars (88,89,91) and feel i ought to have some kind of basic break down cover

about a week ago the glow plug light came on and then went off but for 3 mins there was no power then all was fine but it has been stalling a few times but that might be me !!!
then the last time it stalled there us now a sound like gushing air and no power so i called out the aa and they think that is is a blocked cat or exhaust so taking it to kiwk fit this morning to see.
can anyone help as i need the car fixed buy friday as i pick up my caravan on friday and really need my car fixed Read more
had the car taken to ford yesterday and they have fixed it all it needed was a pipe to the egr and they charged £270 to fix it
I have recently bought the car and it came with a misfire at low revs. The car stutters on hard acceleration up to 3,200 (where the extra ports open) before clearing. The car then drives fine up to about 5,000 when the battery light comes on.
There are no fault codes logged in the ecu.
Anyone got any ideas before I spend any more cash swapping out the battery?

Good one guys.
Swapping the plugs did the trick.
Looks like the (dis)service the garage did before I picked the car up caused the problem. The gaps on the old plugs were much wider.
Thanks for the help.
Hi, on August 12th I am flying with family to Belfast, staying in the city a few days then driving to Enniskrone on the coast to stay on the coast for a while before coming back to Belfast. Enniskrone is across the border. I am getting quotes on line for car rental from Belfast Airport pick up and drop off, but Mrs G tells me that you have to pay extra insurance to take a rental car in to ROI and we wont be covered. I can't see anything on any web-sites I have used to get pricing that says "don't cross the border", or "crossing the border?... click here". Anyone have any experience of this?
What about hiring a car in Europe mainland and driving say from France in to Spain, how does it work.

Main prob with hiring in Belfast and driving into the Republic is that people will think you are from Norrn Iron. This is not always a good label to be tarred with.
Evening all,
My partner's car has recently lost a lot of acceleration from 3rd gear up, particularly when going up hills. This is the first issue since buying the car 6 years ago.
Having driven it today the throttle lacks tension / feels sloppy although the rev's look fine for the speeds, just a distinct lack of poke. Also the car now gets hot quickly, I'm assuming that this is linked.
I've checked the oil and if any connections are loose and everything looks fine. At this stage I'm assuming that it's the clutch but any help would be gratefully received.

has there been a rattle from underside? even just when ticking over/. May be worth getting the exhaust checked as the cat may be breaking up causing a partial blockage.
Woth getting someone to put there foot on the throttle with the engine switch off & make sure its actually getting full throttle on the throttle body in the engine bay.

I wanted to know if car insurance could be got cheaper now that I just past my Class II HGV on Friday? You would think there could be some benefit from taking this which shows you are a competent driver. I found the four day course quite tiring and was well pleased to pass first time, although i don't have a job in transport, I am now looking forward to earning more money in the future.
thanks for your help. Im 22 male and clean driving licence so far but pay astronomical annual insurance , third party as i cannot affort fully comp yet.

I a, losing oil a fair amount and I am having to top up about once a week. it seems to be worse for some reason on shorter journeys. When I travel for an hour+ there seems to be less of a leak (very confused). There is oil plastered on the lower back of the engine but I can't see where from. Also there seems to be oil leaking from the filler cap, could the leak from the filler be being blown to the back of the engine in travel or do I have a head gasket problem andy ideas???? Read more
The problem has been going on for about 6 months with no performance issues just a nasty oil patch on the drive and a couple of cans of oil. Would the turbo have gone now if it ws the return/supply pipes?
I did ask a garage to have a look while in for something else they were less than enthusiastic about diagnosing / repairing the problem so looks like it may be a costly repair.
my 1.6 16v astra auto 1996 has failed mot on emissions co .to high ive replaced lambda , cleaned egr valve, serviced the car, used cataclean,. the exhaust has always smelt a bit rich, and the car has always been a bit juicy. so does this mean the cat is cooked, or is it a symptom of something else . Get it hot and watch the voltage on the oxygen sensor at idle; look for it sweeping at around 1 sweep per second.
Hi all, first post here...
I am thinking of getting a Mazda 2 in Ireland. I read a lot of review and videos, apart from whatcar generally is good comments.
I did a 10mins test drive, (1.3 Touring) it performs very good in my opinion.
My question is does the road noise really bad inside the cabin? Also, driving in Ireland have a lot of ramps, how does mazda 2 perform on it?
Anyone have any issue on the car so far(since it is new, hard to find driver's comments)?
Best Regards,

From HJ pages in todays DT for those who are not aware of what is coming.
"On August 4, new mandatory sentencing guidelines come into force in magistrates' courts in England and Wales. These will apply to all offences sentenced on or after this date and magistrates, unlike previously, have a statutory duty to regard the guidelines. The level of fines relates directly to net weekly income (gross income less tax and national insurance). Where no income is disclosed, average weekly earnings of £350 will be assumed. As a consequence, a motorist with a net weekly income of, say, £500 can expect a fine in the range of £375-£625, with £500 being the usual starting point, if he appears in court for driving at 41mph in a 30mph zone. On top of that, he faces four to six penalty points or disqualification for one to four weeks. For a defective tyre, the guideline fine is likewise 75-125 per cent of net weekly income, up to a maximum of £2,500 plus three penalty points. This is for each defective tyre. In all cases, the fine may be reduced by up to a third for a "timely" guilty plea, and a victim surcharge (£15) plus costs will also be payable. Police will, of course, continue to have the option of issuing fixed penalty notices that take no account of income. I don't condone offences of any kind, motoring or otherwise, but the new sentencing regime will undoubtedly lead to much higher fines being imposed.

I am sure that it still is legal spouse www.autoaidbreakdown.co.uk/works01.htm under the Our service in the UK header. www.moneysavingexpert.com/insurance/roadside-recov...g gives you more details and compares others but as I have said we have been with these for a few yrs due to cost (less than £40 for cover for 2cars) with good reviews seems hard to resist, not had to claim yet but others seem to not have had any problems. might be worth popping over to moneysavingexpert.com and seeing motoring forum and asking for some advise from people who have had to claim and see if they have had to prove marriage status for any claims
