Hi, I bought a Vivaro panel van recently, its a great van but im having a problem with the speedo, it works when it chooses and when it does work it only works upto 35mph, which would be fine in town but I work in the lake district were its all 60mph.
The chap i bought it off hand alot of work done on it before he sold it and the garage sed that it was a faulty sensor, but why they didnt change it then i dont know.
I took it to my local garage and they reckoned it was sumthing to do with the ECU, so they just said to take it to Vauxhall.
Does anybody know what the problem might be?
Thanx

The speed signal is networked from the ABS through the engine ECU to the dash.
This could be the dash failing or a corrupt speed signal; getting it plugged-in is the quickest way to find it.
I have a three faults on my Mercedes CD220i which I think are linked. I get lots of black/grey smoke on hard acceleration which has been made better by a service including replacing the air filter, but despite blasting it down the motorway it still creates the smoke every 10 minutes of driving.
Also the car only does 42mpg despite it spending much of its life doing 55mph, the handbook says it should do 55mpg.
The third issue is the fuel consumption indicator on the dashboard says it is averaging 58mpg.
Is this a dirty injector fault? I have tried redex but no difference.

Some 070 numbers will cost insane amounts from a mobile, up to £50 a minute and beyond. No joke! Remember, they say, "may cost more" from a mobile. Not kidding.
I believe 0704 is one of the worst. They do well because if you aren't thinking they look like mobile numbers.
Beware, as you may rest assured, the regulator is asleep.
I live on a straight B Road which has a 30mph limit. Houses each side of the road and quite a few cars parked either side. Nothing unusual about it. Up the road is a police house which serves as a local traffic division.
9 times out of ten whenever I see a battenburg being driven, and it is not on a shout (no blues and two's) the car is clearly going faster than 30.
Now I know the driver's receive extensive training etc but a kid running out in front of them can still happen at any time with no warning and no amount of training can cover all situations.
My point is, what gives plod the right to drive over the limit whilst the rest of us by law have to stick to 29.9mph?
Even allowing for speedo error, these guys are closer to 40 than 30.
Any coppers out there care to defend themselves? Read more
I had a laugh when approaching a 30 from a 40 the police speed camera van in front of me carried on at 40, not slowing until 100m later. I suspect the coppers do what they are told but have contempt for the current obsession with catching speeders.
On Jimmy Doherty's Farming Heroes (BBC2) it was said that the single 240m chimney at the Drax power station puts out as much CO2 annually as six million cars. How's that for some perspective on the CO2 issue?
Drax generates 7% of the UK's electricity. How many cars are there in the country -- 25 million? Read more

All the stats about Drax [size, coal consumed daily, compared to cars emissions, etc.] nicely summarised in this article.

[note - the comparision of each 660MW turbines to the physical size to a bus is incorrect. Each 660MW set has an HP, IP, plus 3 LP turbines and from end to end, including the generator, the length is probably around 10 bus lenghts ].
The world position of Drax [which has the cleanest coal burning technology in the UK] in the polluter league is made here:

I was reading something the other day about a car with an adaptive automatic transmission and I now wonder how common are adaptive bits and pieces in the electronics so that the car does learn how you drive.
Any thoughts? Read more
I wonder then why Mazda 3 Auto never quite drives the way I want it to. Maybe its learnt to never quite respond how I want it to, because I'm always trying to drive it differently..which has basically become my style of driving.
It's not looking good short term for GM - I just saw they posted a $15.5bn quarterly loss. I still think they are too big to go under but they may end up in chapter 11 bankrupcy to protect them. But if that happens it will not help their suppliers.
All mainly because the USA love of huge trucks is over and GM and Ford didn't see it coming??
I also see that it's finance arm (the bit that normally makes the profit) made a loss. Partly to the write down costs on the slow selling trucks and SUVs. Probably the guaranteed future value sort of thing. Read more
>isn't the Malibu a re-badged, slightly bodily tweaked Opel/Vauxhall Omega,
I think the old Malibu was based on the Vectra platform - not sure about the new one.
The Omega was rebadged and sold as a Cadillac Catera, advertised as "The Caddy that Zigged" because it handled better than the usual Cadillac. It sold quite well at first until reliability problems gave it a reputation as a bit of a lemon.

Hi
I have replaced water pump, cambelt, tensioner and idler roller using the correct crank and camshaft locating tools, however I am struggling to understand the Haynes manual when it comes to setting up the tensioner (hydraulic type). Does anybody have a clear and concise method of doing this, in the form of a diagram and instructions, help would be most appreciated.
Regards
Eric Pedersen

Many thanks for your info, Haynes manual wasn't clear so as I needed the car I contacted my local VW dealership, they were kind enough to let me speak to one of their mechanics who clarified the adjustment procedure. Now back on the road
What (preferably widely available) car washes are good, or are they all much of a muchness?
What sort of programme is useful? Cost (7 Euros, about £5.50 has been mentioned)?
Do you have to stay in the thing whilst it's being washed?
Do these washes clean the underneath (e.g. inside wheelarches)? Read more
I have heard of a high pressure washer catching a fault in a car's paint
and removing a whole skin of colour off a car's door.
Or is that a myth like Lionel Ritchie telling his dog to lay down in
a lift and the girl stood next to him hits the deck.
Not a myth - I took the lacquer off the front of SWMBOs Laguna. She was NOT impressed. Never washed her car again for months until she begged me (OK, INSTRUCTED me!).
Thanks James.
