2001 1.9tdi PD Cam Belt Tension - saxonborg
Hi
I have replaced water pump, cambelt, tensioner and idler roller using the correct crank and camshaft locating tools, however I am struggling to understand the Haynes manual when it comes to setting up the tensioner (hydraulic type). Does anybody have a clear and concise method of doing this, in the form of a diagram and instructions, help would be most appreciated.

2001 1.9tdi PD Cam Belt Tension - Screwloose

If only! VAG have created a nonsense with that tensioner - I get paid by garages to come and just read it for them as 50% of them can't make head or tail of it.

The tensioner om my 2001MY Golf with 1.9tdi PD engine (AJM) is comprised of a housing which contains a protruding pin, approx 5mm dia. This pin is sprung internally, and damped by what I assume a very viscous slicone fluid. I also assume that the spring force is provided by a conventional wire spring. I would not describe this tensioner as a "Hydraulic" tensioner? So maybe there is a Hydraulic tensioner on later models?

Anyway, assuming you have a tensioner like mine, the simplest way I can describe as getting correct belt tension is that there should be a 4mm clearance between underside of arm of Roller assembly (that has an eccentric pivot), and the top surface of the tensioner body.

This 4mm clearance is from memory but should be correct. I've changed the belt 3 times now with no issues, but last time was Oct 2006, so a little hazy.

Of course, there may be a later type of tensioner fitted to your car, for which the above does not apply.

I would welcome any info on types of tensioner fitted to the 1.9 PD engine.

The tensioner you describe is indeed the "hydraulic" type, so called because of the fluid filled cylinder. The later PD engines don't have this and have a more conventional torsionally sprung loaded eccentric idler with an internal friction damper.

Neither of these is particularly difficult to set but you must have the correct tools. As well as the crank and cam locks (the latter is just a pin) the hydraulic tensioner requires an assymetric forked plate with a bend in it to hold it in the retracted position.

Laser tools sell the whole kit for this engine fairly cheaply. It includes the forked plate and will enable the job to be done on all PD engines. The later tensioners are pre loaded either with a hex key or by the use of the bar with 2 pins (or circlip pliers) as is usual on VAG engines. There is a pointer so the tension does not have to be judged.

Ensure that you understand the principle of the vernier adjustment on the camwheel on these engines. You must tension the belt with the cam wheel (but not the cam hub) unlocked so there is no locked-in torque on the belt and so that the cam timing is precisely set.

Many thanks for your info, Haynes manual wasn't clear so as I needed the car I contacted my local VW dealership, they were kind enough to let me speak to one of their mechanics who clarified the adjustment procedure. Now back on the road
