2000 2.5 Rustproofing - Blue {P}
Hey guys!

I'm after a litle advice please, the Mondeo has a decent patch of rust in the usual spot where the rear quarter meets the sill:-

That patch was there when I bought the car but is obviously not getting any better, since the winter I have noticed that rust is also breaking out just above the rear bumper on both rear quarter panels. My eventual plan is to get these areas filled and resprayed, so firstly, can anyone recommend a good bodyshop in the North East that would be cheap for this particular job?

Secondly, what is the best way to rustproof the car once it's done? I'm thinking about getting a Dinitrol aerosol can to fill the doors whilst I get new speakers fitted but from reading a 2005 thread I see that it was suggested to top this off with body schutx, is this necessary inside the doors? Also, does anyone know if there is an access or drain hole for the sills?

Too late to rust proof - needed doing in the first three years. I always used Supertrol, even worked on Renaults!
You could try, needs injecting down between the double skin on wheel arch- a nasty Ford rust point.
use a compressor air spray with paraffin gun. Take all trim out of boot first to gain access.
You see why not many bother?, it is very time consuming.
I also use a flexible tube probe attached to paraffin gun , through drain holes- but with Supertrol in.
I made an Escort last 14 years like that- but still only got £200 for it. So why bother, you car is worthless anyway, get a newer one for a couple of grand

I think I'd DIY it Blue. Rub it down, paint over with rustproofing stuff and mask / spray with a can. Just be prepared to do it again every six months or so. Got to be cheaper and almost as good as paying lots for a pro job which may not last any longer. Bit of preventive medicine now could extend its life a couple of years or more.

Thanks for the advice guys! The DIY option is a definite possibility for the n/s arch, however, as you may be able to tell from the picture that I linked to, the o/s panel is gone and needs cutting away and rebuilding with filler, I'm not confident to try that myself so will probably get a couple of quotes this week.

Once that's done I'm thinking that a good dose of POR 15 (have seen it in a thread on Detailing World) across the wheel arch may help prevent a repeat occurence.

The door seal and sill moulding need to come off as they will be trapping mud and causing the problem. I would clean off as much rust as i can with a wire brush/sandpaper/chisel/old screwdriver and treat the rusty metal with a rust converter follower by grey zinc primer. On an oldish Mondeo I would then fill any smallish holes with a dab of filler. Anything more serious is going to need a patch welding as its a structural area.

If your serious about rustproofing there is a wax injection gun made by Sealey which does an excellent job. Remove the carpet on the inner sill to gain access

Cutting out rust, filling, priming, painting, rust proofing - reminds me of the Saturday afternoons of my youth, usually just before the MOT. You will be talking about aluminium mesh next! I thought serious rust on any car built in the last 12 years was a thing of the past, let alone an 8 year old vehicle.

I'm pretty sure if you give that rust bubble a good poke there will be a hole in it. If you take the sill cover off, I'm sure you will find it's rusty under there too. Since that is a structural bit of the car it needs welding - and it's not going to be a 5 minute job given the shape of it. I too am surprised to see that amout of rust on an 8 year old car.

That panel has been reprayed in the past so I suspect that this rust is a result of inadequate rustproofing when it's been patched back together.

Is that a particularly structual area? I didn't think it formed a part of the safety critical structure? I guess I'll get it checked sooner rather than later...
