2000 1997cc cambelt - legbalives
I recently got a Peugeot 406(GLX).it has done 40,000 miles, and last service was at 33,000 miles.when should I change the cam belt ? are there signs you should watch out for if the cam belt needs to be checked ? Is there any visual check to know maybe it should be replaced or not?

Diesel? change at 72000 or half that if the car does short intensive journeys.
Look for worn teeth, uneven wear or oil contamination.
A worn belt can make a rubbing sound.
Also watch for coolant leaks at the water pump as this mail fail causing damage.

Petrol? same mileage as above.

My 406GLX diesel has done 37,500 and is 7 years old so I'm currently obtaining quotes for a replacement on the basis of its age rather than mileage. £300 approx from a Pug dealer.

Thanks skorpio for your advise. Can they run a check on this in a garage,if it is due for change or not.

My 406,is petrol and I got a quote of 350 from a peugout centre. Is there anyway I can do it less and get a fantansic job done ?

Can you pls explain ,how the numbe of years equate to mileage as regard cambelt? The car is 8 years old and it has only done 40,000miles.

As regard signs,I didn,t notice any,and there were no records of this in the service history.

Sounds like you're in exactly the same predicament as myself.

If you give a garage your registration, they should have a database and can tell you its service history. Two garages have already done this for me as I wanted confirmation if the belt had already been changed. They can also do a visual check of the belt and advise you.

I know the history of mine, and although its been regularly serviced and looked after, the previous owners were elderley and sometimes did less than 3000 miles a year. Not good for a car being under used. (this also explains why I've recently had all new brakes because the old discs were worn and pitted through lack of use).

Basically if a belt snaps, its valves hitting pistons and a new engine!

I had a look at the Haynes Manual and you need specialist tools to lock the engine in position and to check the taughtness of the belt. I wouldn't fancy doing it myself.

From memory, I think the price I was quoted was closer to £350. It was an indie garage which was quoting £50 less. I think I'm going to go with Peugeot on this.

Interesting,we are exaclty in same boat I reckon.Like how much is the visual check gonna cost me in the garage. Also, is it gonna be a peugoet garage that has the service history ?
Thanks for your help.
