July 2008
My Saab 2.3 LPT intermittently failed to start. Eventually it failed completely and I had to be rescued by the RAC.
My garage checked the fuel pump, starter motor and injector electronics but still it intermittently failed to start. The diagnostic computer failed to detect the problem too. The crank sensor has now been replaced and, so far, the starting has been reliable.

Not a big event (last year max of 150 vehicles) but a nice day out, lovely gardens (Victorian themed) with plenty to walk around, poke, prod and see.
There are also very good, if slightly expensive (wins loads of awards for their sausages, pork pies etc) a farm shop, deli and garden centre to browse through too.
My son has been given a motor caravan based on a 1984 Renault Trafic petrol chassis. Despite looking rather tatty, it's actually in quite good condition having done less than 90000 miles from new. When I took it out on a test run, I noticed that the alternator/charge warning light comes on dimly and that turning on something which pulls a lot of current (heater blower, headlights) causes the light to go out. Can somebody tell me what's happening, and whether I can afford to ignore it or how to fix it? Read more
On the alternator:
- a permanent 12+ direct from/to the battery
- an earth
- 2 smaller wires (a blue and a yellow) which appear to be on the same terminal behind the alternator (diificult to see clearly without removing the alternator)
I've got a digital voltmeter and I know how to use it.
Please could someone help me before I go insane. I have a Reanult Megane RT Sport 1.6, which I bought about 3 months ago. During the test drive it almost ran out of fuel, as the seller had run it so low. After running it for about 4 days or so, it started to splutter pulling away from junctions, roundabouts etc, and also when over taking (very unnerving!). It also then developed a peculiar revving pattern. Started at 500, then once the engine heated up would shoot up to 1900. If you turn the steering full lock the revs decrease instead of increase. we took out and cleaned the ecu connections as they had a bit of corrosion, and, lo, the car ran perfect for about 4 weeks. Then out of the blue it started again. Cleaning didn't help this time, nor did changing the ecu plug (huge re-wiring job!), nor changing the idle control valve, or the ect sensor. We have even tried another, decoded, ecu, but still to no avail.
We've run out of ideas, please help!

No; it's going to be K4M or K7M followed by a 7 and two other digits. It's on the engine block just the gearbox side of the oil filter.
Just had the sad news that the head gasket has gone on the car. Is it a big/expensive job or is it more then the car's value? Read more
Those are far from conclusive indicators of HGF. Have you had the header tank sniffed for hydrocarbons.
Don't overlook leaky oil coolers on VAG vehicles either.
My wife's Corsa's a/c has stopped working. The light on the switch comes on and the compressor coil has continuity. I've checked all the fuses under the driver's side dash but there's no 12v at the compressor connector - any ideas? Read more
Shot in the dark! Some sort of safety cut-out to stop the compressor turning when/if the system has no gas in it? The latter is a possibilty in a 7+ year old car.
I've been looking at the Plus. I wanted a diesel SE but round here they are a bit thin on the ground. A local VW dealer offered me 1.6 FSI 07 reg with 6700 on the clock for £10990. I was tempted especially 'cause it had the 6 speed box, but I turned it down. Two weeks later it's on the forecourt for £9790! Is this a good enough price to be tempted. and does anyone have any thoughts on the car in general. Read more
I've just spotted your thread HJ (strange - you don't see anything about Golf + then two come along at once!). Some sound advice from scipi and others.
I'm - as usual - a bit strapped for cash, so the + I saw which was a 6 speed 2007 with 6500 miles on the clock for 9700ish sounded quite good, bearing in mind that it still has 18 months VW warranty on it.
I'll report back after the test drive this weekend.
PS. scipc, regarding your comment about shakes and rattles - I currently own an elderly Almera, so anything has be an improvement LOL
Looks like there won`t be any Roadtrains on UK roads anytime soon

They are big enough already.
Was gonna attempt this myself, but I'm not sure what way round the cogs the belt goes, as I have only looked at it since the belt snapped. Any help please? Read more
