Hi, some help please
My father-in-law has been done last weekend for drink driving. He is in his 70's so with a bit of luck and a heafty ban will never drive again.
My question is about the car, a 5 yr old Astra Estate, the car was mint until he drove it over a round-about. I went to look at it last night and its probably a write-off. I asked a chap from the local vauxhall dealer to do me a quote for the repairs that would be needed. a brief list would include;
new headlights and fogs
new bumper
front wing
radiator
air con unit/fan
respray doors/bonnet
full new front suspension
sort out bent sub frame
at least two new alloys and new tyres
new mirror
and various other smaller bits i suppose.
In short he has done a real number on what was an excellent car. It had done 26000 miles
and was well looked after.
I have two questions.........
Firstly what was the car roughly worth before the smash??
and secondly would it be worth the repairs seeing as he is unlikely to drive it again?
Do you think its better to scrap/sell for parts and how much could he/we expect to get for it???
***
P.s
Im sure drink driving is a touchy subject on here and i would just like to add the following..... I personally think there should be a zero limit on drink driving, I in no way offer idiots like this one single ounce of my sympathy and he deserves all he gets from the court and a whole lot more besides. I will say no more on the subject of drink driving. Im just after some advice for me and my husband over what to do with the car seeing as we are left to pick up the pieces.

Think its true. Seem to remember something of the sort on a visit to the FSS many years ago on a Traffic Law course.
Think a gallon of petrol is expensive?
This makes one think, and also puts things in perspective.
Diet Snapple 16 oz £1.29 .. £10.32 per gallon
Lipton Ice Tea 16 oz £1.19 .£9.52 per gallon
Ocean Spray 16 oz £1.25 ...... £10.00 per gallon
Brake Fluid 12 oz £3.15 ...... £33.60 per gallon
Vick's Nyquil 6 oz E8.35 ... £178.13 per gallon
Pepto Bismol 4 oz £3.85 . £123.20 per gallon
Tippex 7 oz £1.39 ....... . £5.42 per gallon
And this is the REAL KICKER...
Evian water 9 oz £1.49..£21.19 per gallon! £21.19 for WATER and the buyers don't even know the source
(Evian spelled backwards is Naive.)
You don't even want to compare it with perfume or after shave. Ever wonder why printers are so cheap?
So they have you hooked for the ink. Someone calculated the cost of the ink at................
(you won't believe it....but it is true........) £5,200 a gal.. (five thousand two hundred pounds)
So, the next time you're at the pump,be glad your car doesn't run on water, or Tippex, Pepto Bismol, Nyquil or God forbid, Printer Ink! Read more
I don't have a problem with the price of petrol. All the work involved in getting it, refining it and delivering it makes the price of the fuel a bargain.
70 odd % tax then makes it look very expensive.
hi guys! hopefully someone can help
i thinking about buying a used car that i only want for a single journey after which it will be sold. if i register it in my name it will take maybe 4 weeks to come back as well as showing an extra keeper in its history. also it looks odd that a car is being sold after only a few weeks.
what i am considering is filling out the traders section of the V5 so thaat i can sell the car after the journey and a few days after buying it.
i wonder whether this is a good idea or not? i wonder what peopple think of this? i wonder what the seller would make of it?
thanks for any help/advice

If you want to sell after just 10 days, 90% of buyers will smell fish. So, you should expect loss of substantial amount of money.
Is that less than cost of hiring a car?
The BBC web site is reporting at Wednesday, 16 July 2008 10:08
"The planned 2p rise in fuel duty set for this October is to be postponed."
That is all of the statement so I asume it is hot hot news.

Oh, big deal! They should be cutting fuel tax, not just agreeing to not tax it further.

Just recently Bought a 2000 Bora 1.9tdi Sport a couple of months ago and its been great up until last weekend when i finaly got around to towing my caravan with it. The problem i am having is that it keeps loosing power i.e it will be quite happily cruising along at 60mph and for no reason it just looses power. We were traveling for over a hour before it began and dropped us down to 20mph (in any gear). it just feels like the turbo has stopped working and the engine wont rev. It doesnt seem to matter if its going up hill down hill or on the flat. once the problem happens it doesnt clear and i have to stop and turn the ignition off which seems to do the trick which then makes me think its an electrical problem !! but then it happens again further down the road. I am getting no fault lights or engine managment lights its not over heating and the engine should pull my small caravan no problem as it is well under the weight limit . Any Ideas ??

You could have done the turbo in by reving it to high in gears, try to flush the oil and also clean the cars engine up and leave it running to see if theirs any loss in power.
On my peugeot 1.9 diesel The con rod on number one cylinder has snapped and gone through the block . What has caused this? Read more
Thomp1983 is right. There was a huge uproar some years ago on both sides of the Channel over this. In France an owners' group was attempting to take court action against Peugeot/Citroen after the company refused to offer help with the cost of repairs even though it was acknowledged that a batch of conrods used, IIRC, between about 96 and 99 had been made from dud metal.
I don't know what happened to the case but, knowing France, it will come to court in about 2012.
Sorry not to be more helpful, but at least you can be assured it wasn't your fault.
Simple as that, really - is it worth it?
I've been on another forum and a couple of people say its not, as if you claim you will have to stay with that company and they will raise the premium anyway so its not worth the extra...
The only way I could see it working would be if you had multiple claims in one year...
But what does everyone else think? Read more
I am with Esure.
After 5 years with them I am on 75% NCB - 5 yrs NCB (70%) + 5% from Esure for 5+yrs with them to make 75%
They want £20 to protect the NCB (worth £20) so I do not bother.
If I make a claim the NCB falls from 75 to73% !
Only benefit would be multiple claims in successive years.
...car around £5k? My Mum has written off her Mondeo, and whilst everything is fine, she's looking at much smaller cars these days than when she bought the TDCi, my Dad having now got a much larger cruiser for their Spainish trips. In a never-ending quest for fuel consumption and cheap tax, she's been considering the following:
107 1.0 Urban (with a/c), Clio Dci 80 Dynamique (old shape, again with a/c), Fiat Grande Punto 1.3 90 (6spd) Dynamic, Ford Fiesta Zetec-S TDCi and Citroen C3 HDi SX.
I know its a varied list, and they all have their pro's and con's, but does anyone have experience of these in respect of higher-mileages? Are any particularly unrefined or uncomfortable on the motorway? Or any a bit problematic on brisk country roads? And do they really return the kind of figures they report - I know this depends on driving, but the Mondeo always lived up to its 48mpg with mixed driving? She's only small so driving positions are unlikely to bug her, but she does want good visibility and something very easy to park! Read more
We've just been talking and she's concerned about Citroen reliability with the HDI engine. She had a 405 TD that was amazing, and she loved, but also a 306 HDI which was a dog. PSA group cars rarely top satisfaction surveys and it was the Toyota engine that she was putting faith in with the C1/107/Aygo.
How reliable are people's experiences of the Punto? She really likes the look of it, and drove a 75bhp one as a courtesy car recently, but felt it a bit laggy, hence why she'd like a 90bhp one...

It's hidden down the extreme O/S back corner of the engine. Not at all nice to access
