On my peugeot 1.9 diesel The con rod on number one cylinder has snapped and gone through the block . What has caused this?

is this a turbo diesel? if so unfortunately there was a batch of engines code dhy that had problems throwing conrod for unknown reasons

...otherwise it can only be oil supply failure to the crank/big end

Thomp1983 is right. There was a huge uproar some years ago on both sides of the Channel over this. In France an owners' group was attempting to take court action against Peugeot/Citroen after the company refused to offer help with the cost of repairs even though it was acknowledged that a batch of conrods used, IIRC, between about 96 and 99 had been made from dud metal.
I don't know what happened to the case but, knowing France, it will come to court in about 2012.
Sorry not to be more helpful, but at least you can be assured it wasn't your fault.
