June 2008
Started car this morning - ran badly with exhaust smoke. Thought I had a glow plug problem so set off for work. Down the road was missing and smoking so returned home. This evening attempted to start but it didn't want to. Eventually it fired up with plenty of smoke and a loudish noise. Stopped engine and removed timing belt cover. Belt looks fine but when i turn the engine over it doesn't move at all - crankshaft pulley not moving either.
I suppose the crankshaft pulley has slipped on the crankshaft and the pistons have hit the valves? Crankshaft nut appears to be tight but this seems the only explanation.
I put the car in gear and turned engine over and it moved forward so the crankshaft is turning.
Probably not worth repairing considering its age and value if i'm right.

Passat or Tiguan (2008 models) are being recalled in the US and owners have been told not to use their aircon systems.
The recall follows an investigation by the NHTSA (National Highway Transport Safety Administration) into complaints that engine idling may not be controlled when the air conditioning is activated and that there is the potential for a sudden surge in revs. Owners have been warned not to use their air conditioning until their car has been checked. No recall has been announced in Europe as yet, but concerned Passat and Tiguan owners should contact Volkswagen Customer Services or their local dealer for more information.
I can well imagine VW UK holding out for as long as they can until they find it necessary to do the right thing for it's customers.

Hi
Got a problem with my Toyota Corolla 1.3 1993 model. Ignition lock is stiff and sometimes takes numerous attempts to turn the key. Has anyone any ideas as to how to get the shrouding off to get to the lock?
Thanks

Thanks for the info. Had a new key cut which has cured the problem.
Recently I sold my Renault Megane 1.9dti (2000 model) which had done 85k of pretty reliable motoring. In the last two years (after 2 speeding convictions) I had been observing a 2,000rpm limit which transformed the mpg's from c40mpg to c60mpg.
Last month I bought a Peugeot 206SW (2006 model) which has what I understand to be one of PSA's best diesels, a 1.6 turbo. The stats told me that the car was a bit lighter than the Megane, had 10% more bhp, a slightly smaller frontal area and 300 less cc's. All of these factors, I hoped, might add up to 70+mpg average. Thus far the trip computer has said between 69mpg and 74.4mpg but a brim-to-brim fill-up says 60.1mpg.
2,000rpm in 5th in the Megane gave me just shy of 60mph, more than fast enough for the sleepy south-west. 2,000rpm in the 206SW gives me around 55mph and I'm constantly dropping the revs (without turning into a mobile chicane) to get better numbers but 60mpg is a huge disappointment.
I don't know if I can lift-off anymore than I do so is there a trick that I'm missing or is the 1.6turbo a thirsty lump? Read more
Also remember that the Renault engine would have been an old style indirect injection which are generally more economical although less powerful than an equivalent direct injection in Peugeot.
Well yes I have been a bit of a numpty, but will a load of stuff on my mind today I (for teh 1st time ever!) started to fill up with BP unleaded rather than Diesel. After about 5 litres I suddenly realised the mistake.
I paid for the fuel and asked a slightly bewildered what I should do. He said people in the past had done this and what they did was fill up to the brim in Diesel and then keep it topped up for a while.
So I did that filled right up. I reckon the unleaded will be approximately 10% of the total absolutely 15% maximum. I had to drive from there (late for a meeting) and did 10 mile with absolutely no performance, noise, juddering or anything else I can think difference.
Apart from being a numpty, have I done real bad? Should I take any other action or is the suggestion sufficient remedial action?
Don't pillory me I feel stupid enough as it is!

Hi again can i clarify are you suggesting adding Millers to help or are you
saying the errant unleaded I have put in will do the same job.
I know what millers is now I ahve read up on it . But please
answer the above.
Millers not only cleans the system (and increases the cetane rating), it also lubricates it, whereas petrol will not. I use Millers mainly for its lubricating qualities with the added bonus of making the engine run quieter and smoother.
Looking at spending around 4k on a car. It will only be used at weekends and will probably only do about 3,000 miles per year.
Reliability is important and i dont want to be speing a fortune on tax (they have enough of my money as it is!) so maybe a pre 03/01 model. Not to bothered about fuel comsumption due to low mileage but around 30 mpg would be good.
Any recommendations or cars to avoid would be very welcome.
Thanks

The wife has just phoned fron work saying that there is steam coming out fron the air vents on our vw passat 1.9 tdi ! any ideas would be much apreciated.

I think the smell of this vapour/steam would indicate if it's A/C or coolant.
Just wondering if anybody can let me know where the PEF sensor is located on 02 307?? even a website where there is a picture i can look at to give me a better idea!! cheers Read more
What you should do is establish why it's blocked. These regenerating filter systems are just too complex to advise on based on dimly-remembered details from previous posts.
I've had some problems with the tappets closing on this engine, and also coolant loss. Replaced heater valve which was leaking 3 years ago. Found another leak on a hose joint 4 weeks ago which I fixed. However, the coolant is milky white indicating oil in the water. Oil level is down very slightly. The engine is tending to overheat and seems to be pushing coolant out from overflow. Runs ok on lpg but lumpy on petrol and tendency to backfire through inlet when using petrol...which i think may have wrecked air mass/flow meter. Any ideas where I should look for reasons for milky coolant? Head gasket? The oil in sump is a nice black, with the rockers also being nice and black. I know the engine is running rich as the lpg mpg is not as good as before....and successive auto-tuners have told me rich mixture but can't find why. Renault dealers won't touch it cos of the lpg conversion. Any help appreciated.

Thanks - I'd had the head off about 2 years ago and re-ground the valves in. As you say, it probably needs harder seats.
I was guessing on the MAF - MAP . Its been to various engine tuners who all said the engine is running rich, but don't know why. The lpg system takes it lead from the petrol management system. From the backfires thro the inlet side, I was assuming that it would have damaged an air meter of some sort. I'll maybe try changing the MAP sensor then, once the head has been off.
Thanks very much!
Hi all,
Does anyone know if this model/engine will be ok to run biodiesel?
Other than replacing the fuel filters more regularly and after the first 100 miles or so, are there any other parts that will need replacing routinely? What ratio is recommended?
Any help is appreciated,
Cheers Read more

Probably explains the "have a Golf until we can delivery your Tiguan next January" situation in Germany.
