Recently I sold my Renault Megane 1.9dti (2000 model) which had done 85k of pretty reliable motoring. In the last two years (after 2 speeding convictions) I had been observing a 2,000rpm limit which transformed the mpg's from c40mpg to c60mpg.

Last month I bought a Peugeot 206SW (2006 model) which has what I understand to be one of PSA's best diesels, a 1.6 turbo. The stats told me that the car was a bit lighter than the Megane, had 10% more bhp, a slightly smaller frontal area and 300 less cc's. All of these factors, I hoped, might add up to 70+mpg average. Thus far the trip computer has said between 69mpg and 74.4mpg but a brim-to-brim fill-up says 60.1mpg.

2,000rpm in 5th in the Megane gave me just shy of 60mph, more than fast enough for the sleepy south-west. 2,000rpm in the 206SW gives me around 55mph and I'm constantly dropping the revs (without turning into a mobile chicane) to get better numbers but 60mpg is a huge disappointment.

I don't know if I can lift-off anymore than I do so is there a trick that I'm missing or is the 1.6turbo a thirsty lump?

I'm getting 60+mpg from my x reg 406 Estate 110 HDi. Thats with pushchairs and car seats included.
Perhaps the gearing is different to the Megane and you need to alter your driving style?
Check for binding brakes, under inflated tyres. Check all hoses for kinks in case the engines being starved of air. Check and replace air filter. Maybe the injectors are clogged.

Did the prev owner do short runs. Perhaps its gummed up. Try revving it to 4,500rpm in third once in a while and give it an 'Italian tune-up'.
Try a bottle of Redex injector cleaner in a full tank?

You could log onto the Peugeot owners club forum to compare other driver's figures. It may be normal for this model.

How many miles has the 206 done? Modern diseasels take at least 10-15,000 mile to give their best mpg.

Another good point which has come up in conversation. It had done 11,500 miles and I've now been told that diesels don't run freely until they've done 20K or 30k. My comparison with the Megane was probably unfair because it had done near to 70k before I really started to DriveEco.

Thanks for those pointers. The gearing on the 206 seems a little shorter than on the Megane which I found surprising given the 110bhp of the engine. However it is true that I'm having to work harder to keep the revs down and I haven't yet found the best balance. The computer, measured against a refill of the tank, reads somewhere between 10% and 15% better than reality which means that. at present, the best I can hope for is between 59 and 60 mpg. Not only that but Peugeot UK tell me that the trip (set to current and average mpgs) is only there for guidance and shouldn't be relied upon. So why fit it?

However I've been having a good look at the car and I suspected that something was amiss at the front end. Peugeot have booked it in for a check based on my concerns but I had my local garage look at it and they found the tracking to be way out which has taken the front nearside tyre almost to the tread limit already. They suggest that this won't have done anything to improve the mpg's because I've been scrubbing the fronts off as I drive. I raised this concern with Peugeot two days after I collected the car so I hope that they will accept some sort of responsibility.

Regarding the 'Italian tune-up', I'll give that a go as well as the Redex suggestion.

Thanks again for your suggestions and I will also look at the airflow and filters.

Regards and best wishes.

60 mpg a huge disappointment!! If I REALLY nurse my Accord I can get 45 mpg.

It's all relative I guess, and I hope it loosens up for you, but that sounds like brilliant real world mpg to me.

I'd have thought that 60 is ok as well - I get that from a 1.4TDi Fabia estate and used to get about 57 from a 1.9TDi so it sounds about right....

The 1.6 HDI 110 responds well to Millers Diesel Power Plus Sport 4.

Thanks for that. I'm off to look at it now.

I was getting around 40mpg before my two speeding fines. After I imposed my 2,000rpm limit the mpgs went to close on 60. Being nicked was the best thing that ever happened to me (as far as driving is concerned!).

Regards and best.

Also remember that the Renault engine would have been an old style indirect injection which are generally more economical although less powerful than an equivalent direct injection in Peugeot.
