The most horrifying things I have seen done to one of my cars was ...........

(a) Balancing the front wheels on the car. This was a procedure carried out in the 1960s when McPherson Strut suspensions were in their infancy and front wheel balance was very critical. The claimed advantage was that it balanced the whole of the rotating parts, not just the wheel and tyre. The car was jacked up at the front, the existing balance weights were removed and then the wheels were spun up to speed by pressing a motorised roller up against the tyre. (I can't remember whether the roller pressed on the tread or the sidewall, but I remember that the tyres got damaged by the roller skidding on the tyres.)

The vibration was so severe I thought the bonnet was going to fly off!

(b) Testing the dampers. Again in the 1960s. The front of the car was lifted (by about 500 mm if I remember correctly) and the car was then dropped. The motion of the body was recorded on a strip chart. If the top spring mountings and inner wings were a bit rusty (as was common in the 1960s) the car didn't survive the test! Fortunately mine did survive. Read more

Years ago I dropped my "pride and joy" Westfield off for an MOT. Returned later that day to pick it up only to find one of the mechanics doing doughnuts in it in the yard. Full and frank exchange of views and no charge for MOT resulted. Some small revenge was exacted by dint of the fact that the forecourt was gravel and their shiny new tow truck was behind my car as I set off to leave. ;-)

The D.I.L. 's Corsa 1.7 diesel has started to run rough, similar to having a missing plug.

It was refuelled with fresh diesel, the receipt says so.

I drove it after she used it and for me it ran OK. The local garage, not being a diesel specialist, looked at the fuel for water contamination and said it was fine but changed the fuel filter just as a precaution. Apparently the fault is still there.

I have now booked it into a diesel specialist for investigation.

Could anyone offer any advice as to what might be wrong. Do these engines have there known quirks?

Many thanks. Read more

It would appear that a previous owner had rigged a wire to bypass the fuel pump immobiliser, this job had been badly done and the joints had failed causing problems. The inlet manfold had to come off, a proper wiring and termination carried out, all refitted. Car now runs like a sewing maching. (finger x'd)

As requested, here are our first impressions of our lil car ( 2004 auto LX ).

Dealer: As with the Daihatsu, perfect, same dealer.

Practicality: Not a patch on the Daihatsu for packaging, but it is just about adequate for four people. Boot is very small but atleast its a practical shape. There are however many useful cubbies, decently sized too, including the under boot space which is well arranged so you can store various things in the tray provided.

Driving: OK, lets be honest, it is not a quick car, but with a decent space, it can overtake and the gearbox is ever so smooth, more so than the Subaru ( misses agrees ).
The engine is far more vocal than the Daihatsu, nor is it anything other than noise, but if you treat it moderately, it never gets too loud and doesnt need too many revs to get it up to speed. At speed it is quiet, but the gearbox does have a habit of changing down a gear if you dont ease the gas down gently ( the pedal is very sensitive ).
Steering and handling are much better than the Daihatsu and it never feels unsettled even on long, fast bends. Ride is not bad, but the Daihatsu does have the edge in this respect.
Very easy to park although rear window is small.
Rear seats fold down flat with the squabs folding forward, creating a very useful space although not ever so long.

Bits and Pieces: The dashboard plastic around the centre console is rather cheap looking in the shiny kinda way that the Daijit somehow seems to avoid, maybe its since improved but its a minor thing.
Cupholders are as ever, shallow and useless for anything other than cans, bottles tip over easily. Fit and finish generally is very good though, doors feel very solid and everything has a durable feel to it.
One nice touch is having elec rear windows, its a little thing but useful.

Running costs: Reports of poor economy havent been our experience at all - we got 40 mpg from exclusive town work, 43.5 with a mixture of A-roads and country lanes and on a steady dual carriageway run over to Norfolk, we got 54 mpg. This is not in the same ballpark as the Daijit for sure, but its not bad at all and not the 35 mpg that others have mentioned, so maybe our car with 31k is better run in perhaps?
Road tax is £120, and aside fro the Mitsui i and the Smarts, I think this is as good as it gets for small autos.

Overall, we like the car very much. It has different strengths and weaknesses to the Daihatsu, but its still a very likeable little car. Certainly my misses has no regrets about getting teh Subaru gone and she drove over 250 miels in it this holiday, something that she wouldnt consider in the Forester. All id say is, if your used to quick cars and you liek them that way, dont buy one, but otherwise, its a great automatic city car with decent out of town ability aswell. Read more

A lot of Japanese-designed engines, especially Mitsubishis do indeed return better MPG in the order of about 5-10% with high-octane fuel, even the smaller ones.

Whether the current Hyundai engines are similar enough to Mitsubishi ones I don't know. 99RON fuel did seem to return better MPG on my Accent, but nowhere near 14%. Fundamentally very similar, Alpha-series unit (1.3, non-VVT in my case).

hi i hope someone can help me?

We bought a import liteace, it ran ok till we got home then over heated, so we were told it needed a new head.
We had it changed, it went ok, then over heated again.
It had a hole in the rad so we had it changed, but they towed it back.
Now we have it home the engine runs ok but no transmision.
Has it got a safe mode on it, because its an automatic and is stuck in third gear when we put it in drive.

We have spent a small fortune and are at our wits end and still no go. Thankyou to anyone that can help us get mobile once more.

Make sure that you are following the handbook procedure exactly - particularly if it requires the engine to be running.

had an accident today. I was pulling out of a road, turning left onto a narrow one way street. there were cars parked to the right and to the left. immediatly to the left by the junction there was a transit van parked on double yellow lines which was an obstuction, there was no-where for me to go as it was one way so i tried to go past. I hit the van. there is damage to my left wing of my car and the bumper was completely hanging off. there was no damage to his vehicle. i pulled over and my passenger and i observed a gentleman guiding another car around this van.
I waited 20 mins and eventually a man came back to the van,the driver was the man guiding the second car around him, he clearly knew he was obstructing the road! he apparantly had been delivering to a local temple. he didnt understand my attitude to his parking and said that i should have seen his hazard lights. he refused to give me his insurance details and left. i took his reg number and informed the police. my insurance company have told me that as much as i wish to dispute liability, despite his vehicle being illegally parked and causing an obstruction, as it was stationary when i hit it, i probabaly wont get very far.

am i just supposed to accept this?

Hello all,
Last year when i went to Majorca I wanted to hire a convertible and I was given a 307CC. I think it was the 2 litre HDI 136. It has a 6 speed box and held 2 adults and 2 kids and our luggage (for our trip from the airport). But on the windy road to Torrent de Parreis with 4 of us on board changing gear constantly between 2nd and 3rd became a tiresome chore and this car felt slower than the 1.9dci 120 Renault Scenic we rented the previous year. So i've gone all out this year and reserved myself a Mercedes CLK Cabriolet 320cdi. What does this drive like? Will there be room for our luggage as with the 307cc?

I had a 320i for about 6-7 weeks back in 2006. I echo your sentiments. A nice car ruined by a gutless and thirsty engine. You really need a 6 cylinder powerplant to enjoy a BMW.

My stepson's insurance renewal notice from a well known chain of brokers showed the rate of interest, if paid in 10 instalments as 65.30% per annum.

This is approaching the rates for Mafia loan-sharking operations (and the small print also helpfully points out "you have no right to cancel this agreement under the Consumer Credit Act 1974 " )

A quick internet search found him a lower premium and an instalment scheme with a reasonable interest charge but I wonder how many people are innumerate enough to sign up for finance at 65.30%?
Or does anyone know of a higher rate for any product?

Well at least they are "honest" about it!

Because the law requires it.

Personally, I think APRs confuse things, and I'd much rather think in real money than in percentages. If you look at the example linked above, the loan is going to cost £50 - what could be clearer than that?
