Why are the UK services so expensive the German ADAC premium is 75euros covers you in any country in the world in any car, provides flight tickets for upto four people ,hotels upto 270euros a night hire car if required and delivers your car to where you want it to be,the best equiped service vehicles I have ever seen, there service is second to none makes anything the UK offers a little stonehenge.
Do you think the Big and main bearing shells will have been given endurance enhancing improvements on the forthcoming Fiat and VW `Stop start twins? that or different oil additives ?
I have always been aware of importance of hydrodynamic lubrication on regular engines so have let them tickover for a few minutes rather than stop/starting when, for example SMBO pops into the Post Office from the passenger seat.
Yes, I`m aware of additives and boundary layer lubrication, but it would really go against the grain to let a `Stop Start` engine keep letting its shells get to the boundary layer 200 times a day in the rush hour.
Any thoughts?

You`re going to tell me next that you never read `Car Mechanics` at the back of the class at school GB. What do you expect after sniggering at all those copies of `Flagpole and Jubilee Clip weekly` in your desk? ;)
Regarding the engines, That`s going to be an awful lot of stop/starts though on a typical bus lane congested, gasper of a route.
Even If the shells and crank are designed for it and perhaps a new oil spec, there is still the Human Psych.... Unfortunately in `Paranoia World` there is always metal to metal contact and those solenoid valve actuators have been supplied by a pinball machine manufacturer.
Imagine, A12 London bound, 65mph decent car lengths behind Green Jag' X type. Nothing in front of Jag' outside lane. Brake lights come on, I ease off and for some reason now down to 45mph in o/s lane. I pull to inside lane and draw along side Jag' to see blond lady, mid 30's driving, male as pax, young child in back seat. Of course, she was texting and completely oblivious to all around her. I shot off and she stayed in the o/s lane texting as people flashed her and undertook her obviously still doing 45.
Later overtook me, and guess what...another obviously really important text to send/receive in outside lane. Quite why her pax didn't text for her....or punch her in side of head for being so crass I don't know. But anyway, well done you stupid anti-social cow and an accident waiting to happen. Read more

erm dont won't to rain on your parade but ecu's do indeed fail changed one yesterday in fact z18xe with constant missfire and are quiet common on this engine, the early vauxhall ecu's are not testable and as such then not repairable, how ever back to the ladies ecu without hard facts as to what has been done to diagnose that the ecu is u/s trouble codes etc then i can't make a comment as to whether a new ecu is required, i think that personally they are guessing, please ask the garage for written confirmation as to what has been done and post all the details regards TB

Fair comment, SL - we Midlanders don't get much practice at cliffs, so we do go a bit giddy when we get to the seaside.

I'm toying with a very late S-type diesel. The car I've seen is in sport guise, no chrome, very smart dark colour an cream leather inside - lovely! It's only 9 months old, about 13,000 miles, cost new about 30k. Now going for under 20k, it seems the XF has hit residuals of the S-type. All the reviews say the diesel S-type was a great car, the only thing holding it back was the styling. In sport trim I find it quite appealing. This car is basically very similar to a new XF, with is 34k. It seems a lot of car for the money - hardly run in and 14k less than what I would need to pay for the equivalent new.
Now, obviously this car is a previous model, so will date. The question is, has it already taken most of the hit for this and am I picking up a great car very cheaply because it isn't trendy, or would I be in for a shock when its value drops like a stone?? Read more
New company cars probably will still sell until purchase managers look at the new lease rates and running costs and then they will down size, its secondhand stuff thats stuck if anybody tells you they are selling three year old executive cars in quantity I would find it hard to believe .
Hi all
any budding perry masons amongst you I had my van smashed apart on thursday by a hairy pink fluffy dice builder in a large transit van toally his fault ,on wrong side of road i,e, mine and hit me head on. severe frontal damage but possibly only panels radiator and whatever is behind there like a brand new starter motor only fitted last saturday at a cost of £167.00 my question is this if the insurers (virgin) deem that it is beyond economical repair where does that leave me I have fully comp insurance with business use, have never made a claim ever!! untill now so i dont know the drill except that they never offer you a true valuation to replace for example I have seen similar vans this age priced at £1500 so I am expectingt a ridiculous offer I would sooner mine be repaired as 1/ it is in superb pre accident condition2/ it has a new fiat dealership engine 27000miles ago costing £3.500 which I still have the receipt for3/ it is sign written all of which I believe have an intrinsic value( fancy word but probably spelt wrong) but you get my drift any advice on how to proceed in the event of a write off and rubbish offer and what value should I realisticly put on it and can I insist on a repair given the previous items mentioned
Thanks guys Read more
I have been reading the posts on insurance write offs and the hj faqs page im in that position now my fiat scudo 2.0jtd x reg was smashed head on on my side of the road and many witnesses absolutely other persons fault.
long story short repairers have collected vehicle from recovery yard done estimate for repair which is bonnet wing lamps grill radiator etc etc cost £31500 submitted it to insurers (virgin) who have said its a total loss on cost basis repairers let me know this yesterday and I am now waiting for Insurers to contact me with ludicrous offer to replace. where can I find glasses guide type valuation for the van as i wish to prepare my case for rejecting the offer on the grounds that it was in first class pre accident condition it has a new engine fitted in 2004 by fiat dealers at a cost of £3.500.oo which I have got receipts for it was boarded out sign written roof rack all of which are going to cost me to replace so what value can I place on it Ive looked in auto trader and similar vans are going for £1800.00 but have done 100k miles any advice gratefully received
fore warned is fore armed as they say
thanks guys
Work colleague is considering buying a new Suzuki Grand Vitara 2.0 petrol but is worried that the back brakes are only drums and not disks. Does seem unusual for a modern 4x4 not to have disks all round. Should he be concerned? Read more
Not too sure about drum brakes + mud = better.
Back in the 70's I used to work on concrete mixer trucks with drum brakes
all round. The rears used to fill with cement and sand dust etc.
Yep. I had trouble with drum brakes one year after driving along a road across which soil dust was being blown (from the adjoining fields) by the wind. The drums had to be removed and the dust cleaned out before the brakes would work properly again.
hi all how do i adjust the handbrake any advise welcomed . can it be done from inside the car? Read more
if your model has drums then the correct method is, undo the adjuster nut at rear of centre console to release all tension on the shoes. remove the drums, adjust up the shoes properly (the self adjuster's don't work well), refit the drums, tighten up the adjuster nut until the desired amount of clicks is achieved, i usually go for fully on after 6 clicks. release the handbrake and check it isn't binding the brakes, if it is back the adjuster off slightly.
you could of course just tighten the adjuster as many do which will tighten it but the shoes will likely need adjusting anyway and is the proper way to do it.
