Having spoken to my local dealer, they said that Daihatsu didnt spend much on advertising here despite some good products that would sell better with better brand awareness but it would seem they have decided the Sirion is a potential money spinner as I just saw an advert for it, focus on the spec and cheap running costs. A word of warning for anyone with a 5-door Civic and I'm fairly sure this will also apply to the later model, 95 onwards Rover 400.
I suffered a brake failure this morning due to a rusting brake pipe blowing. The car passed its MOT last year without them being mentioned. A post mortem at the garage revealed that where the rear brake pipes run under the car they are covered by a plastic casing which renders them all but invisible. Suprisingly they are not required to remove this casing to inspect the pipes. The MOT form did include a note that the sills could not be inspected due to plastic covers, surely another note should be included regarding the concealed brake pipes.

Helo,
I remember reading a thread here (more than a year ago), about I think a saab convertible, and the guy put a deposit down then changed his mind, said he wanted out, they said ok but we keep the deposit. He disagreed and noticed XYZ in the contract was unfair. He threatened legal action and at the eleventh hour they capitulated.
I have searched high and low and cannot find it. If anyone knows the thrwead I am on about maybe you can find it for me, or tell me it was deleted for XYZ reason. Read more

can anyone tell me the difference between a Mann oil filter part no W 719/5 & W 719/30. Can i use 719/5 in place of the 719/30. Thanks in anticipation. Read more
According to GSF its the W719/30. This is also the one currently on the car. It's just that i've got an unused W719/5 that fitted my Mk 3 golf, externally it's identical.inside the spring loaded valve is lower down. Thanks for your reply.
I recently dumped several car loads of rubbish at the tip in Crawley. Not brought from home in Scotland! I was surprised to have my car registration number shown on a display at the entrance, will I get a bill, fine, letter of commendation, or an entry on yet another database. Read more
You are probably quite correct with your assumption but I paid around £2500 towards their roasted peanuts last year!
The thread on my sump nut on my Polo is nearly stripped. Is there something I can buy to solve this problem? If so, where do I get it?
Thanks

If the thread on the bolt has stripped, not the nut (sump). Buy a new bolt.
It accurs to me on browsing down the makes of cars featured in the forum Technical section that it would provide an interesting ongoing record of the comparative reliability of makes and models.
For instance, I have just scanned back through several pages and cannot find a single Volvo problem for any model, old or new. That presumably means they are either very reliable, or have all been scrapped as hopelessly unreliable.
Does anybody keep a running total? Would it tell us anything useful? Read more
I declined to put in any quetsions or comments about my Volvo S40 (bought new), since I would have filled up the database quota with the number of problems I had with it. Worst car I've ever had in my life - and I had a Lancia Beta at one point!
Maybe Volvo drivers are just too scared or proud to admit some of their cars (especially those not built in Sweden) have problems.

It is a problem in the States - GBW was mouthing on the telly about the importation of petrol/diesel and lack of refining and the madness of importing it to the US when I was there last week. He;s signed an Executive Order to overturn a decision made in the 90s to ban drilling on the US continental shelf unleashing between 100 and 200 years of capacity (depending on whose agenda you listen to), the mood is very bullish there, much talk about drilling their way out of th situation.
BTW this Executive Order is a mere gesture but enough to kick start optimism.
Iran is the other factor to consider, they control the Straits of Hormuz, if that racks up we're in the pooh.

I'm in the process of replacing the front tyres on my new car for the first time.
I've always preferred Continental tyres so I'm going to switch from the Bridgestones that came with the car.
Now is it always best to go for the latest version of a tyre, i.e. the tyre that is OK for my car is the Sport Contact, but the Continental site only shows the newest version which is the Sport Contact 3, I'm assuming that the others (Sport Contact & Sport Contact 2) are no longer made although they can still be bought.
From my internet searches all three are about the same price (£100), the older ones have a slightly different tread pattern and have good reviews.
So is it best to go for the newer version of the tyre? Read more
FWIW, as I've previously posted, the OE tyres on my Golf V 1.9TDi were Continental 3's. The fronts were replaced at 43k miles with Continental(no number)s - these lasted just 29k miles (same journeys!). They were replaced by Michelins, which have now done 30k and still have approx 4mm left.
The original rear nearside Conti3 has just been changed after it wore unevenly on one half of the outer edge; the original offside rear still has around 4mm at 103k.
(The fitter at a national tyre chain didn't believe that a tyre could last more than 45k...)
I would be really grateful for some advice regarding tyre pressures for my BMW 130i M Sport (5 door).
I recently had new tyres fitted and the new configuration is as follows:
Front Goodyear 205/45 R 18 86 W
Rear Goodyear 225/40 R 18 88 Y
In order to check the tyre pressures I looked at the small plaque on the driver?s door pillar which specifies tyre pressures. Unfortunately the combination above does not appear at all ! The notice shows set ups for all 4 tyres designated with ?W? speed rating, or all four tyres designated with ?Y? speed rating. It does not give pressure settings for a combination of W and Y tyres.
I am very confused as to what pressure I should set the tyres (for normal loading), or if the tyres have been fitted incorrectly. Any help or advice would be very welcome.

Did you manage to get any further information on this?
I bought my 130i a few months back. The tyres on the car at the time of purchase (from a BMW dealership) were the exact same as you specify above.
I couldn't see any specifics in the manual as to the acceptability of the mismatched speed rating though. Let me know if you have any further info on this.
Thanks, Nigel

To be fair, the dealer also sold Kias and Protons. The showroom was crammed full of cars, so I guess he probably had around 12 new models to sell. Iwas a bit surprised at his attitude, but I must admit it was quite nice not to be pressured. On the way home we stopped at The Car People site - again, nice to look around without any pressure, though we didn't see anything we wanted to test drive.
Maybe it's age, but I can't be bothered with hard sell on anything these days. I want to browse at leisure and make my mind up at home later.
