1998 1.7 Rough running diesel. - Peter
The D.I.L. 's Corsa 1.7 diesel has started to run rough, similar to having a missing plug.

It was refuelled with fresh diesel, the receipt says so.

I drove it after she used it and for me it ran OK. The local garage, not being a diesel specialist, looked at the fuel for water contamination and said it was fine but changed the fuel filter just as a precaution. Apparently the fault is still there.

I have now booked it into a diesel specialist for investigation.

Could anyone offer any advice as to what might be wrong. Do these engines have there known quirks?

Many thanks.

You need to see what the diesel specialist says - obviously the local garage couldn't read fault codes. Is the engine diagnostic light on?

Faults could be wide ranging - crankshaft sensors common failure IIRC as well as fuel pump.

two early for error codes i should think but as suggested let the specialist take a look first and go from there

To continue,

I picked the car up from the local garage to take home prior to taking it to the diesel specialist. It kept stopping every time I dipped the clutch and finally would not start. A Greenflag recovery man came out, bled the engine and it started and ran, however he investigated further and discovered a damaged dangling relay between the fuel pump and the bulkhead. This was being nudged by the gear rodding and shutting the engine down. He kindly towed it to the specialist and we now await the outcome. I hope this is the source of the problem and I will try and publish an update later.

It would appear that a previous owner had rigged a wire to bypass the fuel pump immobiliser, this job had been badly done and the joints had failed causing problems. The inlet manfold had to come off, a proper wiring and termination carried out, all refitted. Car now runs like a sewing maching. (finger x'd)
