June 2008
Hi, Can anyone advise me how much it should cost to have the clutch replaced in my 04 Passat 1.9 tdi estate. Thanks. Read more
Just wondering if anyone else has had problems with new Golfs / Golf Plus's delivered over the past three months or if it is just problems related to the Italian versions built in Wolfsburg.
Ive had the following:
Rattle from air conditioning in central arm rest - repaired but has now returned
Boot door not aligned properly - repaired but still not fixed properly
Various rattles from inside the left passenger door
Grinding plastic sound when the back right suspension is working
Right side of the front bumper is not flush and seems to be coming loose
Right back door not aligned properly
Only good thing about the car so far, is the motor, quite for a diesel and very economical.
Car is now going back to the dealer for a third time on the 25th June so to have the various problems rectified hopefuly for good this time as Im getting tired of having to return to the dealer.
Dealer and VW customer service very helpful, just a pity about the poor quality of their cars. Read more
Can't comment on recent VW's, but I have a Skoda Fabia so was interested to learn Skoda HQ are based with VW HQ in the UK.
My car suffered a major breakdown just before christmas and Skoda point blank refused any goodwill payment and in hindsight Skoda behaved in an aloof manner when I subsequently complained, reminiscent of other posters experience of VAG.
My Skoda has full main dealer service history and always serviced according to Skoda guidelines.
Not a happy Skoda driver.

For a Clio II 1.5 dCi after 07/03 it's belt, tensioners, waterpump etc. every 72,000 or five years; whichever comes first.

DD.
All, especially the VW owners and lovers amongst us, one my colleagues has recently had his car returned from a dealer following a replacement cylinder head gasket along with some other top end ancillaries.
Unfortunately, he didn't look under the bonnet on receipt and on return home when he eventually did, he discovered that the black plastic cover which covers the top of the engine was missing. Its the big black one which is either intended to make the engine bay prettier to photograph or stop enquiring fingers disturbing anything.
He contacted the dealer who told him, sorry, that model doesn't have a cover on the engine. (Despite him pointing out that the clips which are around the top of the cylinder head to hold the cover in place are now empty and useless.)
His Polo is an 06, 1.2e, possibly the PD05.
Does anyone out there have one, and able to confirm if they do indeed have a cover, and if so, what the part number is, if it is visible.
Thanks in advance.

I would never expect a cylinder head
to fail on a VW after 42000.That's why I bought into VW because of the
perception of german quality and build.
I didn't expect our SEAT Ibiza (same car) to miserably fail its MOT at 4yrs & 34K miles, but it did. SEAT couldn't care less and it gave the dealer scope to screw me for several hundred pounds which they gleefully used to their full advantage.
Is there some connection between this cover and the c/head problem any ideas anyone?.
I keep an eye on one of the fairly active SEAT forums and just did a search and can't find any mention of cylinder head issues, and the SEAT engines tend to be more powerful (our is 70PS - near as dammit 70BHP). Timing chain slipping is a big issue on early 1.2's but they fixed that in 2003/4.
An obvious one really but I saw a car for sale earlier that was £500 (1994 Mazda 323, 119k miles) with diplomatic number plates and I thought the plate might look rather cool on the Boxster. Go ahead and judge me. Anyway, the question is, does the D plate stay with the car when it is sold? I'm thinking not. Read more
I read some time ago that the US Embassy, amongst others, were contesting the "Congestion Charge", arguing that their staff were not obliged to pay what they argue was a *tax*, contrary to the Vienna Convention.
Has this been resolved yet?
My Front windscreen washers have stopped working suddenly.
Yes checked the water level. The motor appears to be working fine.
Have removed the hose from just under the washers and activated no drips or anything.
The rear wash works fine.
Strange thing is pulling the wash wipe stalk back activates the rear as well. Twisting the top of the talk round also activates the rear wash
Any suggestions please.

Sorry to add to an old post but anyone searching on this might find it useful.
My 2001 HDi SX washer motor failed and I found that by breaking it open I could add a home made rubber washer (cut down grommet) and some light grease. This fixed it for 2 years when the plastic impellor snapped - £11 for the motor to fix it properly....
I've been contemplating how frequently folk on this forum complain that they have been advised by a dealer or at MOT to have brake discs replaced due to wear, pitting, corrosion etc.
Now, the integrity of these simple components is essential in ensuring that your vehicle stops rapidly and efficiently when this is called for. Much more important, really, than how fast it accelerates or moves in the first place.
Brake discs are fairly simple cast metal components that are relatively cheap to buy and easy and cheap to replace (compare, say, with the price of a tank of fuel).
Skimming discs should be confined to the history of motoring.
I don't think this is an area where risks should be taken or cost skimped on. If the discs are below par, get them replaced and, of course, the pads at the same time.
.discs that have more than one thou lateral run out will wear your brake pads down unevenly,ie the pads are thinner on one side of the vehicle than the orther for instance, this can now be easily rectified with an on car brake lathe and NOT a bench lathe.
Further to my post of 13 June 2008 I'm afraid I do not understand this. Sometimes the pads do wear slightly unevenly but the disc will be squeezed just as hard even if one pad is brand new and the other is down to 1mm. (don't let it go to the metal, I have just embarrassingly discovered that iron filings are very difficult to clean off alloy wheels!)...

Sachs Clutch £98.75 + VAT and DMF £205 + VAT. Most people fit both while they have the gear box out. I fitted mine last month
