Engine Cover - You know - the 'don't tinker' one. - MrWednesday
All, especially the VW owners and lovers amongst us, one my colleagues has recently had his car returned from a dealer following a replacement cylinder head gasket along with some other top end ancillaries.

Unfortunately, he didn't look under the bonnet on receipt and on return home when he eventually did, he discovered that the black plastic cover which covers the top of the engine was missing. Its the big black one which is either intended to make the engine bay prettier to photograph or stop enquiring fingers disturbing anything.

He contacted the dealer who told him, sorry, that model doesn't have a cover on the engine. (Despite him pointing out that the clips which are around the top of the cylinder head to hold the cover in place are now empty and useless.)

His Polo is an 06, 1.2e, possibly the PD05.

Does anyone out there have one, and able to confirm if they do indeed have a cover, and if so, what the part number is, if it is visible.

Thanks in advance.

Not only does it make the engine prettier it cuts down top end noise from the engine and so does the plastic under tray under the sump.

If they did'nt want you to mess they'd have fitted tamperproof screws to hold it on

All modern engines have plastic covers dont they?

Has he checked the handbook for a picture of the engine?

Seems to be one on ebay, is this the correct one?: snipurl.com/2e3bc [cgi_ebay_co_uk]

"All modern engines have plastic covers dont they?"

No

My Audi 2.0TDi - engine cover.
Friend's Toledo 2.0TDi - no engine cover.

I seem to remember a previous thread about it being optional on some VAG group cars.

Thanks to Rich 9-3 for the pics and auction link. Seems that this is the earlier engine lay out. I have been informed that the Airfilter box and the brake fluid have been relocated.

Hamsafar, thanks for checking - I assume you have access to a VAG parts list.

For the record, my colleague phoned VW and was informed that the vehicle was delivered without one - can they really be this exact?

In any case, my apologies to the Mod. Thought I was meeting the spirit of the name and shame policy - no personal axe to grind. Appreciate it could have weighted other posters views unfairly.

My 2003 1.2 certainly has a big plastic cover with "1.2 12v", a VW logo and the hole for the oil filler cap in the middle of it. Hope this helps.

PS It certainly wasn't optional when I got mine.

Different car but same engine - daughter's late 04 Seat Ibiza 1.2 certainly has an engine cover. It's quite tricky to remove as it has at least a couple of pipes attached to it.

Doesn't the cover also form part of the pedestrian impact protection.

Lessens risk of skull meeting hard cylinder head.

I had to have cylinder head replaced on my Polo 1.2 e this week(after 42000 miles ) and when I lifted the bonnet at the dealer after the repair my engine cover was missing.I told the dealer and they told me that the car had never been fitted with one because it had air boxes fitted and showed me the manufacturers part spec for this car.
How many miles had your car done when the gasket had to be replaced?.
I am certain that this cover was there.
Is there some reason and connection to this disaapearance?.

Depends which engine is fitted.

Early 1.2 engines e.g. 64bhp AZQ had a large engine cover which incorporates the air filter.

Later engines (starting around 2005 I think) such as the current 70bhp BMZ no longer have this cover as the air filter is in a square box on the nearside side of the car behind the engine. The cover from the earlier engine will not fit.

Mores to the point, is there a problem with the VW 1.2 3cyl engine? I though only the Rover K series engine went through head gaskets!

Wifes 06 1.2 Polo doesn't have on either. When I questioned it at time of purchase the dealer even went to the point of showing me 2 other 06 1.2 Polos engines, none of which have the cover!

Seem to remember a similar thing with my 05 1.6 Focus Lx, there were mounting points but no cover!

VW offered to pay for new cylinder head and 30% 0f labour cost. The dealer offered 20% towards labour cost which left me with a bill for £454.Is there a moral here for for taking out extended warranty, although I would never expect a cylinder head to fail on a VW after 42000.That's why I bought into VW because of the perception of german quality and build.

I'm sure this cover was there as I had cleaned it of on the occasion when I filled up washer bottle and checked oil.
Is there some connection between this cover and the c/head problem, any ideas anyone?.
My car is registered 8.02.06 I don't know what BHP of this engine is.
Has anyone got a recent Polo with an engine cover fitted?.

Me again, my car does have two other boxes which I was told by the dealer are filter boxes.

My old MK 5 Golf 1.6FSI had a nice smart top engine cover whereas my new MK6 1.4TSI doesn't but does have sound absorbing padding fixed to the under surface of the bonnet lid.
This is, no doubt, part of VW's cheaper manufacturing costs for the new MK6 Golf.

There are many examples on this car where cost cuts are evident although the retail price was considerably higher!

I didn't expect our SEAT Ibiza (same car) to miserably fail its MOT at 4yrs & 34K miles, but it did. SEAT couldn't care less and it gave the dealer scope to screw me for several hundred pounds which they gleefully used to their full advantage.
Is there some connection between this cover and the c/head problem any ideas anyone?.

I keep an eye on one of the fairly active SEAT forums and just did a search and can't find any mention of cylinder head issues, and the SEAT engines tend to be more powerful (our is 70PS - near as dammit 70BHP). Timing chain slipping is a big issue on early 1.2's but they fixed that in 2003/4.
