I've just bought a 1996 E39 323i with a genuine 62,000 on the clock. It has a main dealer history except for the last service, where it says 6.5 litres synthetic oil 10-40. Yesterday the oil light came on and I see it's just below the minimum mark on the dipstick, it's done 7,000 since the service. I can't get an answer on the phone number I have for the company that did the service, so what oil should I top it up with? It's 11 months since the service so maybe a full change may be in order, but I read somewhere that 15,000 was more than likely. I thought 10-40 was semi-synthetic, I expected fully synth to be more like 5-30, although I suppose 12 years ago 10-40 was cutting edge.

Any recommendations for topping it up? Magnatec has been mentioned by someone at work. Read more

Polonium stated: "use the cheapest oil that meets the API SL or CF spec", which are rather old specs, and satisfied by cheap oil. As BMW use ACEA, plus their own on top, and American oil standards are irrelevant, I stand by what I said. Cheap oil was stated to be adequate, in the context of the posters gripe that manufacturers oil standards were apparently nonsense. You can't have it both ways.

on the oil change does the oil filter just screw off and hw much capacity does this 306 hold so i know how much oil to buy thanks Read more

Oil filters should only be fitted hand tight, they should then be able to be unscrewed by hand. If you think the filter is leaking see if you can tighten it by hand, if not its probably OK.

If my diesel car ran out of fuel, how do I prime the pump to get the new diesel through? Also, cleaning it today, I have seen a couple of plugs (green and yellow) under the front seats. What are these and are they used for anything? Read more

cossiejay

the hand primer should be fitted to the fuel return not the feed pipe so you draw fuel through the pump

Hi,

I need a new (possibly two, for both remotes) electronic ?blipper? part of a 2002 Nissan Micra key-fob as shown here www.remotekey.co.uk/cars/nissan/ (2nd from the bottom, on the left) ? the ?remote? part and not the complete ?key and fob?. The Micra doesn?t have an alarm, although the manual says it does have an Immobiliser, even though I?ve unlocked and driven the car by using solely the key. I?m confused about that part.

The fobs have been used so much that the incredibly-poorly-made switches on the circuit-boards, inside the key-fobs, are all-but-broken, as well as the outer rubber pads being split. Over the years I?ve repaired the circuit boards and replaced the batteries, when necessary, but now I?ve had to resort to sellotape to keep the circuit boards together.

I?ve read that a dealer could well charge over £100 for a new key-fob and re-programming.

Can I buy this cheaper elsewhere or buy one or two second-hand, as the one, in the link above, is also about £100?

Could I, alternatively, buy a replacement for the little square circuit-board (which is the main part that doesn?t work) inside the remote? It?s easily removable as I?ve removed it, numerous times, to repair it.

Thanks for any help anyone can give.

Hi all I just re-programmed my keyfob from the instructions here for free http://reviews.ebay.co.uk/Nissan-Key-Keyfob-Programming-Reprogramming?ugid=10000000007277355

It works perfectly now and all for the price of a new battery for my fob! Give it a try for yourselves! Cheers!

I have a Standard Saxo 1.1 T reg.
I have been having problems with my brakes. I have taken it to two garages and they don't seem to have the answer... When i push down on the brake pedal there is no tension yet they are also not spongy. I've had brand new discs and pads fitted to see if this helped... It did'nt then i took it for a brake check and they bled the brakes and stripped down my wheels and brakes, they thought i had a seized calliper.. they oiled and cleaned them up.. The brakes felt better only for 2/3 days after, now they seem to be back were they started. Has any one got some advice for me?

Hi Chris wondering if you could elaborate for me as i am having the same problem. how big is the plastic cover and do you mean bonnet when you said boot? I found a bar that comes from the servo to the front of the steering wheel under the bonnet this has two nuts at the end of it with a spring attatched to the middle.

Statistical outlier

In the context of car insurance, does anyone know what commercial travelling is? Read more

Statistical outlier

I've had nothing in writing from eSure, and having had my policy come through, it still excludes commercial travelling.

I've just phoned them, and having checked that the call was being recorded, had the discussion again.

They define commercial travelling as being for "hire and reward". Apparently using your car as a taxi service would count. So would using it for travelling sales "where cash was being taken at the point of sale".

They were completely clear that using it to visit customers on pre-arranged appointments, whether demonstration equipment was being taken or not, was absolutely fine so long as it wasn't a cash in hand deal.

So there you go. I'm quite pleased with the deal I've got, £200 cheaper than the lot I was with previously, more like £250 cheaper if you consider that they don't charge for the temporary additional vehicle during services.

Hello all.

I am trying to find out without much success from Peugeot the answer to a couple of questions about the RT4 satnav system fitted to my 407. The manual doesn't help at all and the dealers know even less so if anyone knows the answer to these questions I would be very grateful :-

1.) What do all the symbols mean on the LCD screen when veiwing traffic conditions on the map ? I can guess some but others don't mean much.

2.) What does the shading and colour of the roads mean ?

3.) Is the traffic avoidance dynamic ? i.e. does it re-route along the journey if the traffic changes ?

I even tried the manufacturer (Magnetti/Marelli) but they never replied .......

Brother in law and family travelled to Shrewsbury from Cumbria this weekend to a wedding, they used two cars, one with built in sat-nav (his sons) , and BIL using a "borrowed" Tom-Tom unit. Niether drivers have ever driven the route before, and both cars virtually followed each other all the way there on the motorway, however, things changed when they got back onto "ordinary" roads, with BIL arriving at destination nearly three-quarters of an hour before his sons car!

Reason?:

on investigation it turned out that BIL's sat-nav was set on "Cheapest route" and Sons on "shortest" route.

just proves that the shortest route is not neccassarily the quickest or cheapest!! - strange!

This is my daughters car and I haven't had a chance to see the car yet.
The airbag light is lit continuously when the ignition is on (which I understand is not an MOT fail point).
Previously this car had a problem with connector behind the instrument module (when all warning lights were flashing) and Fiat fixed it (2 years ago). Since then the airbag light has flashed occasionally but is now permanently lit.
I don't think the wires (if any) under the front seats have been disturbed.
Any thoughts please? Read more

Two other possibilities on a MK2 Punto.

Most likely - airbag connector for passenger airbag is right above glovebox. Momentary break in the circuit will put light on. This momentary break will often arise by trying to close the glovebox with too much in it. Puts pressure on the connector, 'et voila', light is on. (Ask your daughter, in a hopefully non-accusatory manner, if she could have been trying to get too much in the glovebox)

Less likely - problem with the airbag de-activation switch (at left end of dashboard - open passenger door to see it). Also known to put the warning light on.
