Can anyone advise me how to adjust the handbrake on my 01 1800 Mondeo. It looks like there is some sort automatic mechanism on the handbrake lever, but how does this work? I have replaced the rear pads and discs and the h/brake works ok but the lever still comes up a bit too far,in my opinion. Can someone help please. Read more
The early Mk3s didn't have any manual adjustment. The way to adjust the auto adjustment is to press the brake pedal hard down before applying the hand brake and don't press the handbrake lever button in when applying. Do that a couple of times and the lever should settle down. If that doesn't work then check if you've had the recall fix done, it involves adding two little blocks of metal to the ends of the cable to effectively shorten the cables. If you already have had the fix done then the cables may have stretched and need renewing. Alternatively you could put a later handbrake lever on which has an adjuster on the short attached cable.
Hi,
I'm having nothing but problems with my wife's Corsa C. It's the 1.0l 12v. I drained the battery listening to the radio when doing work for it's recent MOT. I recharged and it ran lumpy, mis-fired at low revs and lacked power. Two days later I went to start it in the morning and it wouldn't even fire. I've checked for a spark and all three plugs are firing fine, also fuel is reaching the cylinders but it just won't fire at all. I've even tried towing it and nothing.
All electricians I've spoken with tell me to bring it in and they'll have a look, no doubt costing me a fortune in the process and I'd prefer to narrow it down if I can before being compelled to dig deep!
Any advice welcome. Read more
I hope he's not still trying to start it
My sons 03 renault clio 1.2 headlights have stopped working, i have changed both bulbs and checked all the fuses in the fuse box at the end of the dash on the passenger side, but are still not working, is there another fuse box somewhere, or is it a more serious problem, i would appreciate any advice. This worked for me too! Clio 1.5dci 54 reg. Full beam and sidelights worked fine, main beam not at all. Wasnt even on the dash. Looked under the glovebox and one of the fuse relays (white block looking type of thing) was hanging out. I guess a passenger must have caught it as it is quite exposed (typical renault!).

Am I facing a long painful wait for the fine to go to the leasing company, to the fleet manager, to my boss and finally to me, or does the fact there was no flash mean I'm safe? Read more
As above, the infrared flashes. It is noticeable, especially in the dark. Every time I've set one off, you couldn't possibly say that you hadn't seen it, if you see what I mean.
As for ignoring a ticket - don't. Most of the system is computerised now, so the ticket goes off, and then is timed. 28 days later it'll pop up again, and if the file hasn't been updated, then it's off to court. The days of people sitting on their backsides chasing it up manually are, by and large, gone.
This is my first post here.
I have a 98 VW Golf estate and I think the wheel baring has gone because I get a humming noise from the back wheels when i'm driving and last time this happened it was the wheel baring.
Unfortunatly I can't afford to have it replaced for another 3 weeks and in that time i'll need to drive 1500 miles (roughly 100 miles a day) to and from work. I'd like to know if its safe to do that because I don't want to wheel to fall off while i'm doing 70mph on the motorway.
Any idvice you can give me would be great. Read more
Lightly tap and move around to the next groove in turn gently easing the outer ring out of the bore.
Yes. And you can tap the new one in, going round and round it, in the same way if you don't have a press. The difficult bit is to get the new ring to engage in the bore. You need to protect the bearing surface while you do that using a wood block or suitable metal drift (the old ring is a bit on the small side). And while you are tapping it in you have to take care not to scratch the bearing surface. But it isn't too difficult and doesn't take for ever.
I was quite shocked to find that my car was low on oil.
I check quite regularly, every month i'd say. Anyway car was in the garage and they informed me when i picked it up it was below the recommended level of oil.
Car is toyota auris t180 and holds 6ltrs of oil. I think they had to add just under 2ltrs, possibly just over - i should check.
So, naturally i'm worried because i'm so careful to check the oil. Last time i checked it was half way down on the dipstick. I reckon the slight slant on my drive and i mean slight is giving me wrong readings. My own stupid fault but as this is a brand new car, only done 9k miles i'm worried i could of done some damage!!
Could i?
also - no warning light came on and due for service anytime now. Still haven't got a clue how long i could be running low on oil and i've been giving it some beans too.
What do you think?

A couple of weeks after I bought my car the oil warning light came on, I had an oil change done straight away and has not come on since, however the top end now sounds like a tractor and it is probably related to the oil warning light.
I check my oil every week now, its better safe than sorry. Stem seal problems I can live, a seized engine I cannot.
Hi,
Looking for some suggestions on where I stand persuing this one..
I had 4 tyres changed by a tyre place, 9 days later going along the motorway the front wheel fell off, the bolts were rattling around under the hub caps. I was doing 60 at the time on the M4!
Not really sure where I stand on this as it is a cheap car, bought for £700 but has had some idiot key it all over since, and a further 10k miles so not it good nick.
I think being that the MOT is up in june and it will need some work to get it through, its going to be a scrap job.
I've had a scap yard pick it up, and a mechanic is going to look at it to asses the damage, but based on what I've told him it wil be £350 min, if he does find anything else more.
So I've lost my car and the money spent on 4 new tires!
Do I have much basis to go back to the garage with if the mechanic feels it's their poor fitting (which I can't confirm yet, but seems likely.) ?
ANy help much appreciated. Read more
If you buy a new vehicle there is no stipulation to my knowledge to have the wheels checked for tightness after a short distance.
On taking delivery of a new MB at Sindelfingen all the bolts were checked in my presence before hand-over, but I would suggest that is no longer the norm when purchasing from other outlets.
My present Skoda had bolts tightened to the point of immovability with the supplied wheel spanner.
659.
My car is 2005 Focus 1.6 tdci.
I find that at mway cruising speeds ( about 70 - 75, since I have 9 points! ) engine noise is low due to high overall gearing.
However road noise is far louder than the engine on most surfaces unless you are on very smooth tarmac. Most seems to come from the rear of the car.
I believe that since the tyres are more than half worn, they are most likely contributing a fair bit, but what I'm wondering is; do aftermarket kits of felt stuff and glue really work on this sort of noise ?
Otherwise I would be sticking the felt stuff in all sorts of difficult to get to places to no avail.
Anybody have any experience of this ? Read more
Re bbd yes it was aimed at OP pity the post is ancient only just noticed as I tend to live in the present. Still it might apply to someone with an old car, I did it myself as a project and it worked a treat.
The well known intermittent Focus1 speedo problem has often appeared in this forum and is usually cured by changing the speed sensor. However this week's Watchdog programme featured a speedo problem apparently caused by corrosion of the circuit board in the instrument cluster.
Is this the same problem? Is changing the sensor only a temporary cure, with the real answer to change the instrument cluster at great expense?

Hi elliott83,
the same for me, I see that the thread is almost abandoned, but I try anyway, cause I have the same problem on my MK1. Speedo and km display on and off, radio volume follow the problem. Did you solve this and how? I'm still looking for a solution....
