I have successfully changed the pads and discs on my C-Max. Fronts only. I used the G clamp to push the pistons in.
Can you use this procedure on the rear discs. I have heard I might need a special tool to wind the piston in. Is this the case or can I still use the G-clamp?

It was set before to the worn pads, if you pump the pedal hard then adjust up the cable taking up the slack you will get the 4 clicks.

Check that it is working by jacking up and try to turn the wheel.

iam at present asking the council to change a speed limit, from a nsp to a 40mph any body out there with any views on this. is it true that if a council applies to the highways to do this, that they the council would then have to pay to up maintain that stretch of road. Read more

Some v good points, Westpig.

I'm dismayed at the wider and wider imposition of 50 - even 40 - limits on rural roads that are relatively hazard-free. At 50 mph people do drive along with their minds in neutral, and for many that seems to be the speed they're naturally comfortable with, making driving (too) 'nice and easy'. As I said earlier, when traffic is heavy, and accidents more likely, traffic naturally slows anyway - no need for a speed limit.

Following mimsers I'm afraid I'm bored and frustrated (but I try to be aware of the former and control the latter). When I've a clear road I drive as fast as the conditions allow and I'm on the alert for hazards. Very satisfying and actually safer.

The nearside CV boot has split on my Civic Aerodeck.
Does anyone know whether it is possible to remove the nearside outer cv joint to replace the boot or do you have to remove the whole drive shaft and dismantle the upper joint to replace the outer boot.

Any information to help me to decide on this would be appreciated.

Update to this post.

The nearside CV I beleive after speaking with several people may/does require a strip down of the inner CV Joint which means draing the transmission fluid.

If you can find a local mobile mechanic who has a hydraulic Boot stretcher and get the right type of CV boot (I was recommended "Bailcast Duraboot") then it can be stretched over the CV therefore removing the need to strip down the drive shaft saving hours.

Liverpool area mechanic who was very helpful and has the Bootstrecher is MVS 07850 250981.

Hope this will be helpful for other Honest John users.

Front pads or callipers are rattling when going over badly surfaced roads. Pads are new and feel snug enough, presume callipers are old, but brakes all work OK. Is the only cure to replace the whole calliper or can I do the carriers separately? New callipers are a whopping £370 + VAT!!

Thanks for any help.

How do TfL know that a foreign-registered car is (or isn't) exempt from the Con charge? How much data-sharing is going on EU-wide, and is Data Protection legislation (like Human Rights legislation) neatly being sidestepped?
I am curious as to how many non-paying foreign drivers have been billed, once back home, and of those how many have actually paid up.
Just curious. Read more

Whole can of worms opened up here, by the sounds of it. I can foresee the day when the majority of cars on roads in (UK/London/name your place) are foreign registered and over half the population avoids speeding, parking and congestion scams, sorry, fines. For every single rule, there is a way round it.
You, Sir! 6 months' residence? Are you going to register your car here? Quick return trip to Belfast on the ferry, nip over to Eire and back again and the 6 months are broken. Much the same principle for those wanting to avoid tax and not wanting to rack up 180 days' residence.
Number plates? ID cards? Don't make me laugh.

Probably a daft question but years ago when I bought my first diesel the fuel was cheaper than petrol and you got better mpg to boot.

Whilst fuel consumption is still better of course why is diesel now so much more expensive than petrol?

I'm not sure that's the case ... in the US, where their approach to consumer essentials is somewhat different to ours, fuel crashed through the emotive "2 dollar gallon" mark a couple of years ago and is now approaching 4 dollars ... but they seem to be by and large resigned to it rather than protesting

so 7 dead....I'm deliberately not going to say what i'm really thinking out of respect for those that have died, (inc the person who's caused it)....and....the two parents sat in different hospitals hoping to hell that their kids make it

however,

what's the betting there'll be a speed camera there after this and/or road lane changes/double white lines etc.......when in all likelihood the real reason is poor driving from a person with a history of poor driving, who in my opinion was dealt with particularly leniently on the last occasion, if the news headlines are to be believed. Furthermore there are plenty like it driving around with impunity, you see them every day.

(Mods...hopefully this post has remained respectable and i'm conscious there won't be a court case as there's no one left to prosecute. If not considered appropriate there won't be any histrionics if you delete it). Read more

I need to replace the front pads on this car, can anyone be so kind as advise on how to dismantle the calliper to extract the two pads. Am I correct in thinking that the outer spring clip is removed and two (possibly Allen key (size?)) bolts removed or slackened.

Many thanks for any advice offered. Read more

topbloke

remove spring, undo the 7mm bolts replace pads, when you push the piston back its usuall to open the bleed nipple so as not to push the fluid back through the system, refitting is just a reverse of dismantling, remember to pump the pedal back up after every thing is refitted and before you drive it to bed them in

Residesinsurrey

Hi I have been offered a Renault scenic 2.0L 1997 there is a problem with the gearbox that needs to be changed . Is it worth buying it for £200. Does anyone have any idea how much it would cost ???is it a big job??

{I realise you're new here, but please try and read the message that appears under the subject header when you compose your question. The one that goes "(INCLUDE year of manufacture, car engine size and nature of problem; EXCLUDE make/model as this is automatically added at start of subject)" Thankyou - ps, and of course there's the 2 separate sticky requests overlooked as well}

I think you'll find that the costs will be significantly different on the type of gearbox - suggest you find out before you get any useful advice here.
