Hi...

I might be looking for a "hot" or "very warm" hatch, and apart from the Golf GTI, the Renault Megane would be a strong contender. But there are SO many models, can anyone help me make sense of them, preferably comments from people who own any of the following...

So.... warm/hot diesel versions are listed as

Tech Run dCi 130 6 speed
Tech Run dCi 130 FAP Auto
GT DCi 150
Renaultsport dCi 175
Renaultsport dCi 175 Lux

petrol versions are listed as as

GT 2.0 Turbo 165
Renaultsport 225 Cup
Renaultsport 230 Renault F1 Team R26
Renaultsport 225 Lux

So what are my priorities (help point me to the best version for me).

Nice interior - black leather - and a modicum of toys - CD changer and Climate Control

Smooth ride - more GT than hardcore sports - lots of potholes and speed bumps here, and I sold a Hyundai V6 Coupe cos the suspension was too hard.

Good mid-range acceleration - currently drive a pug 406 Coupe 3.0 V6 Auto, and the acceleration is useless until you get to close 4000RPM, this means I am always changing down on the auto box. Even my Bora 1.9TDi tiptronic auto I had a few years ago felt more lively. Since it had 130bhp, I have listed anything with 130bhp or up above.

Safety - I would want traction control (I spun off in the wet driving a 200SX turbo) and possibly even 4 wheel drive.

Note the above are my priorities, but NOT in order of priority, just things I know matter to me. the 200SX had 200BHP and felt wonderful (until the back end lost it). I certainly wouldn't want more, but also realise that the mid-range performance was most important not absolute top speeds etc. 20 - 50 acceleration , or 30 - 70 being where it counts.

Can't even decide diesel/petrol, but probably would prefer petrol. Diesel is attractive due to the mid range shove I know is typical of a turbo diesel.

Thoughts?

I own a 175 Dci lux and to be honest its better than the golf I have as a company car. it is incredibly quick when excelerating from 30miles an hour upwards and corners brilliantly.

The suspention although hard is livable and feels smooth when traveling on motorways...

A word of warning though.. Dont get the DCI version unless you do quite a high milage. if you do lots of short runs the particlate filter never get up to full working tempreture and can clog. Salesmen are unlikely to tell tell you this!

But if like me you clock up the miles on a daily basis it makes real sence. There are big reductions 2 if you are prepared to walk away a few times.

Think of these next winter when you're struggling to clear the screen with an ice scraper!

I used to carry a lighter in winter many years ago (think Mk 2 Escort) to warm the key to stick in the door lock to defrost it and get in. Not to mention the petrol filler cap but that required a bit more caution! I don't think it would work in this instance!

I am trying to find out the locations of the various stages of this years Wales Rally but so far there isn't any info on the website and I haven't been able to find out anywhere else.

I have been offered the use of a holiday home in Llanidloes which I think may be fairly close, but wondered if anyone here could advise me further.

Also if anyone could let me know about the practicalities of spectating etc- I have a 4yr old boy who loves going to Brands Hatch with me, but never having gone to this type of motor sport event I don't know how suitable it would be.

Many thanks. Read more

I ran some quotes using screen scrapers (to check how much premium will be following my recent claim) - surprisingly my quotes are coming same irrespective of what I enter in amount claimed box! For example, £400 or £4000 claim returns same premium.

Does it mean if there is a claim record against me, I'll be paying same penalty (i.e. higher premium) whether the car has bumper damage or write off?

TBH I've not seen any sites where they ask how much you claimed - just the fact that a claim has been made.

Hi Guys,
Anyone know what the approximate fuel system pressure is on a bmw 525
or a Vauxhall Senator 3.0 24v?
Basically i'm looking for what pressure a Bosch Motronic system would typically have!
I'm guessing around 3 Bar?
Cheers chaps.

Today i started the car with no problems drove down the road and nipped into the shop, came back out and the car turns over but wont start. Theres no glow plug light comming on (i know that when the cars warm it usually doesnt, but its only gone half a mile).

Now to give you some history-

Since having the car, when ive come to start it from cold, sometimes the glow plug light doesnt come on when turning the ignition so will just turn over. When that happened id just try the ignition again and it would light up and start.

This makes me think that there may be some kind of communication problem between the ignition and starting?

The other things that have been mentioned when ive searched are the 'electronic ignition fault', crankshaft sensor and camshaft sensor. However im not a mechanic and am just trying to get as many ideas as possible to sort it.

I need help as the car is stuck at the side of the road in not a very nice area.

Thanks for any advice. Read more

yeah sorted now. Took a bit longer maybe an hour or so because i couldnt get the unit to seat properly. I then realised that it goes better if you seat the seal 1st then the unit.

MOT time soon too so glad thats done.....now for the steering rack!!!

My son has a 1996 fiesta which has just had a new 1.4 zeetec enngine fitted. Since then the fuel guage does not work and as soon as you need lights at night the engine dies. Has also died while driving along but this is intermittant. Believe this may be an electrical/bad earth fault but need some help in which direction to look. We have already checked the earths and cleaned them up but still getting worse.

Any idea's?

(thanks for putting the year & engine details in the subject header - NOT!) Read more

Did you transfer over the alternator from the old engine? Or have you used a different one? Try fitting in a different battery and check all earths.

When the temperature is below 7c, it can take up to 10 seconds for the ignition lights to come on after turning the key to ignition. This only happens the first time I attempt to start the car. A couple of other people are having the same problem (What Car and RAC motoring forums), but neither has had a definitive solution. Hoping to have more luck here. Read more

I'm replying to my own post in the hope that pushing the query back up the queue will get a response.

Now the weather's warmer there's no problem. No-one got a thought?

I saw the torygraph comments on the new scirocco yesterday. Can't say I'm hugely taken by the new car. It still seems too much like a concept but I guess the proof will be in the pudding when it emerges in September and we start to see it in the flesh.

However, the story got me thinking, or rather reminising of the day in the early '90s. 19yrs old - I bought my 1986 Scirocco MK2 GT. What a great day. I traded in a dreadful 205 1.1 that had been my first experience of car ownership and what a difference - it felt like coming of age. It was only the 1.6 model but was firm handling and felt like a rocket compared to the Pug. The styling was, in my opinion, compelling, particularly with the subtle skirts/spoilers - it was black and sleek and somehow felt grown up compared to the contemporary boy racers. I also loved the relative internal compactness and the low ceiling. Oh yes and the slightly quirky 'bent' gear stick.... i could go on.

In 16 subequent years and about 12 cars later I am yet to eclipse that feeling of elation in the first drive of a new car - a close run thing with a 3 series and again with Pug 206 gti but neither was quite the same as that first real car experience.

Perhaps one day I'll get my hands on an R8!
