There is a lacl of power as car moves up through the gears, cant hear turbo "whistle" but there is a rush of air sound on initial acceleration. Car runs happily at higher speed on straight road - i.e 50/60 mph ps . where is the air filter located as we thought this might be a good place to start. Read more
spent a day watching a zebra crossing in London out the window, seems stopping for folk on the crossing is now optional in London
bit further up the street a red light stopping traffic for a crossing was driven through on red by the MAJORITY of traffic, not just after it changed, but on solid red, by taxis, buses and even police cars
seems London driving is getting more and more like Milan where lights and road rules are very optional
and on the M3 and 303 today passed several of our "travelling" friends and their vans and caravans and cars all had tape over the number plates blocking the letters totally, where are our ever so brave boys in blue when it comes to these folk who seem routinely immune from the laws the rest of us get hammered for?
such a shame

Oh dear woodbines, I'm afraid my ribbing about pudding land and bucolic got to you... sorry, only teasing.
Me too Lud! Being a country dweller, my high horse needs a canter every now & then.
I've come to the conclusion that carpets in cars are an even worse idea than carpets in bathrooms. I've spent most of the morning trying to pick off half-sucked cola cubes and molten opel fruits from the rear of the cabin. It looks a mess despite my efforts, even the regular muck is difficult to suck out from the fibres of the carpet. Don't even go there with the damned pine needles from the Christmas tree. I can't see the point any more. I don't have them anywhere in the house, why do I have to have them in the car?
My suggestion would be an ultra-cool grey speckled teflon below door sill level. Super modern, super trendy, set off with a brushed metal effect finish on the facia. Wipe down, or even hose down. What a great idea. Yes?

Volvo used to do nice fitted rubber mats - they were dished at the edges to contain any spills.
But if half-sucked cola cubes cause you bother, why not just ban them from the car. Problem sorted! (And don't say you come under pressure - I've carried kids in the car without every having anything more than the odd cup of water spilled or sweetie papers dropped on the floor - but I'm just as guilty about doing that!
A country road which I use regularly has, for no obvious reason been changed from NSL (60 mph) to 50 mph, with 2 sections of 40 mph, one on a sharp bend and one on a blind brow. The 50 mph section has a sign at the beginning and then nothing for over a mile, until it briefly becomes a 40, and than back to 50 with no sign for another 1 mile. Bearing in mind that other 60 mph roads join and there are no signs to warn people, is this shortage of signage likely to render the limit invalid? I am not asking because I have been caught speeding in it - I am just interested in the legality and enforceability of a limit which is posted but seems to be short of repeaters/reminders.
Deserves to be in its own thread rather than IHAQ ! Read more
No, it is under the control of one County Council. The only accidents that I am aware of in the last 3 years, have been on a bend which is now a 40 limit. The 60 reduced to 50 is quite unecessary as one section is a one mile straight and level stretch. The link that DVD kindly posted earlier shows that there should be repeaters at laid down intervals. If a road appears to be an NSL 60, but has been reduced to 50, there have to be signs along it to inform people, particularly those who joined the road from NSL limited other roads who would otherwise be unaware of the lower limit. The road in question is the Burley Road, from the West side of Cottesmore to the East side of Oakham - a distance of about 3 miles.
2003 HDi Exclusive Estate. Over the past year or so I have experienced a gradual loss of power. The problem with this is that as it was a slow change you don't notice it until it gets bad. I had a problem with the head gasket and got it changed and the head skimmed hoping that this would solve it. However the problem appears even worse. There are no warning lights and the garage say that no codes are coming up but they do agree that the power is very low.
Any ideas?
Year and engine type put in subject line - got bored with being sarcastic now Read more
Hiya. Did you ever get this problem sorted out? I have a 2002 C5 2.2HDI 136BHP with what sounds like the same problem! I have had it into citreon and they think it need a new turbo but as no codes are coming up they are not sure!
I was given a 1995 306 with bad clutch, changed clutch and now will not start,so far I have cleaned all ground cables, the engine turns over after code 0000 entered as original keys wornout but no fuel or spark,I removed keypad and found that the original numbers stayed down as the membrane was worn out so code could not be entered, would new keypad solve my problems johnsky
(year added to header. Would have added the engine details as well, but you've not given any despite the 3 separate requests that ask for them) Read more
now you've got it sorted id enter the code then unplug the keypad, due to old age the systems are getting unrealiable and were never that good to start with.
chris
When I turn the key the engine does not fire properly, the lights on the the come on and the engine locks in a judder, then when I try again its ok.
If the car has been left overnight its usually ok, I usually get the problem when I drive a short distance ie 2-5 miles leave the the car for a while and need to start it again.
This is an occasional problem
Any thoughts
Thanks Read more
Not necessarily a DMF disaster.
See my previous threads on starter and injector problems. I did have a starter fail for whatever reason, it was replaced, this then failed 10,000 miles later...DMF would still have been in good condition if it were not for the duff replacement starter taking the DMF out too.
I also have had new software with a wider calibration range downloaded for the worn injectors. Although I had starting problems from cold, not hot.
On the front page of today's Sunday Times there is an article headlined 'Darling to hit family cars with £2000 tax'. In this article a 'Senior Treasury Official' is quoted as saying "People don't take much account of the cost of car tax and fuel when buying a car, it is the price sticker in the showroom that makes the difference".
Truly scary isn't it that people so totally ignorant and out of touch with reality are governing us?
No doubt this guy enjoys the use of a chauffeur driven car, paid for by US!!

Did I hear Darling say that Ministers would be driven in small eco cars?
No, I didn't!
Hi, I wonder if you can help, I have a zafiria 2001 (x) 1.6 16v its mot is due and it is very Smokey on start up. I have had problems with the egr valve (Replaced) and the cat (Replaced) and the Coil (Replaced) going at this rate be cheaper to get new engine :-)
1. When it starts it is very Smoky but when reving for 1min at 3500revs it clears any idea?
2. In a mot do they check the emissions when the engine is warm and at high revs or idling?
engine details and year inserted in subject line - maybe we should ask more than the three times than we do before you post, maybe its not quite clear enough. Maybe too lazy to read etc etc etc. Read more
Depends on what is wrong ie worn valve guides, valves, head req skimming etc,
If a garage is doing the work expect approx £250.00 + you will need a cam belt kit and maybe best to replace the water pump, different areas of the uk different prices!!
Can anyone help? I have bought a used & tried to install a Ford 6006e 6 disc Radio/CD player in place of my single disc model in my 1999 Ford Mondeo & also tried it in a an 2001 Ford Fiesta and understood it just plugged in using the same cables. When CD player installed there is no display (will not power on) so cannot even get to the code entry stage. I am aware that the volume switch is also the power switch. (when I reinstall the original equipment it works fine) Am I just doing something dumb? Bob

Hi Simon, thanks for that. The connectors all fit correctly so may have to find a vehicle with exactly the same unit fitted to try a like for like to rule that out. The unit was an Ebay buy from what apears to be a genuine guy. Thanks again. Bob
Thanks,i did have the engine cover off earlier today just to see if there was anthing obvious befor i ran it round the block. I had the engine running on the drive and even reving the rush of air was'nt apparant untill road tested when the engine was under load,i guessed then it might be an air intake problem,i'll have a closer inspection in daylight thanks for your direction.
great help thanks paul
