You see lots of older cars running around and in good condition. makes me think that many people are keeping theirs for years. My longest was a Volvo 240 estate at 5 years, whats yours? Read more

After reading the about the Mazda 6 Diesel, does anyone know if the same engine is in the 3, both the 1.6 & 2.0 guise. Any info pertaining to the Mazda 3 2 or 1.6 diesel engine would be useful, i.e belt driven or chain, has it got dpf, does it use Eolsys (?spelling), does the enging have any known weeknesses to date, is the engine a designed Mazda engine or some other manufacture. Is the engine shared with any other car or manufacturer? Read more

There's also a new Mazda 3 on the way as well. From spy pictures of the saloon version it looks more like a facelift than a new car though.

VW Golf Mk3 TDi 1996-Recently when I turn the ignition on in the mornings,I noticed that the digital clock keeps resetting itself to 0:00,and the radio stations have all been lost, also its often hard to start on cold mornings and a couple of times there isnt enough power to start it and I have to use booster.Im guessing that its probably the battery thats dying,(its at least 6-7 years old)but before I shell out £50+ for a new one,is there anything else that could be causing this problem?

One day, all the electric windows stopped working. None of the switches work. Dead silent when I use the switches. Seems power is not getting to any windows, as there's no sound suggesting something is stuck. Checked the power window fuse (40 amps) in the engine area, and it's fine. Can't see any wiring faults.

Any advice as to what might be the cause?

Thanks,

MichaelOx

I intend replacing both front and rear pads this weekend. Is there anything I should look for and are any special tools required? Also do the caliper pistons turn or just push back?
Help appreciated. Read more

Good idea to open the bleed nipple when piston going back to expell any moisture
& crud from behind the piston and not to flip the master seals.

As well as clamping the flexible rubber pipe.

Had a comment from Seat regarding misting up of headlight assemblies which intimated that this was the norm on large area head lights. Have you had simlar experences on other cars [ this does not include where the lens has been pierced by a stone etc.??

I'd not advise drilling holes. Keep as much moist air out once it is dry.

I agree. Holes in the outer casing will allow moist ambient air to be sucked back in when the unit cools after it has been switched off.

Following an abortive installation of a radiator to my 1997 Peugeot 306 D-Turbo [one owner from new] resulting in the bottom hose becoming detached from the radiator, with subsequent loss of coolant [no overheating at this point, stopped immediatly low coolant warning light appeared ] I summoned my recovery/breakdown service, whose operative securely refixed the bottom hose, but failed to bleed the system, resulting in an an 'emergency' stop a few miles down the road, with engine warning 'stop' light illuminated, and engine fan operating. Symtoms of a blown main head gasket are indicated.
Who in your opinion should I take to court, the garage or the recovery service ie., the garage who indirectly caused the blown gasket [by the abortive installation of the radiator] , or the recovery service who directly caused the blown gasket [by failing to bleed the cooling system] notwithstanding, that they would not have been involved whatsoever, had the garage not undertaken an abortive repair?
Also, anyone with any experience of County Court [small claims] in respect of abortive repairs undertaken by garages?
Would welcome your opinion [s] on this one. - thanking you in anticipation.

Keep it simple! - wonderful book - was the author Edward G De Bono? I am still awaiting comments from the Breakdown/Recovery service following a 'shot accross the bows' style of letter....Hmmmmmm sounds good, but surely [in my case anyway] my costs in association with two MHG's wouldn't be quite right......

I'm going op north tomorrow AM. We're leaving NW London at 7:00am and I'll be going up the M40 to avoid the horrible roadworks on the M1. When I get to Birmingham way at about 9-10am, I can either go M42 north & M6, or M42 north M6 toll.

Without expecting a crystal ball, is it usually bisy at that sort of time? With a £150 fuel bill for the round trip due to my very economical car, I'd rather not spunk another 5er if it would only make a few mins difference to the journey... Read more

We occassionally use it. In recent years a sort of secret code is flashed up on the motorway signs. e.g. J14 (or whatever) 28 miles, 31 minutes. Which means its clear and moving a bit slower than 60 mph. It never fails. We then judge which to use.
Of course what we really want to see is 'public road fine, don't bother with the private'; or 'public road solid, if you use private it is good for you and good for those on the congested public road'.
Alas, I suspect such simple information would hurt the private profits, and an agreement was made not to put off drivers using the private road because they can't take a chance.

I once had a 2.0 litre 406 coupe that was so low geared it ran in 5th at 4000rpm when the road speed was 80mph; it was noisy.
Does anyone know if the 2.2 litre petrol was any better? Thanks for all replies. Read more
