What is the law regarding dealers and warranties? A dealer has said that he will NOT warranty anything under a grand. I understand his position, but what actually is the law

Sale of goods act etc. Anyone?

See HJ's FAQ no.5 www.honestjohn.co.uk/faq/faq.htm?id=43

Note that for cars under £5000, if you go to small claims court and then "judgements" do not become "case law". See the final part of the FAQ no.5
.... Where a carbuyer has paid a retail price for a relatively new car for over £5,000 that suffered severe problems within 6 months and the dealer tries to wriggle out of his responsibility by calling it a "trade sale", then lawanswers.co.uk is prepared to take on the case in order to set a case precedent

p.s. the link given by HJ to the DTI no longer works because the DTI is no longer the "DTI" but is now the "BERR". [ cue more taxpayers money wasted on new logos, changing web sites and printing new headed paper and documents and new brass-plates on the doors etc. )
The correct link is www.berr.gov.uk/files/file25486.pdf " A traders guide: the law relating to the supply of goods and services (505KB)

My wife walks the kids to school, she knows that by driving them (which she has to option to do) she is teaching them to be lazy and it is so unhealthy for them.

So why does every other parent wants to? It is evident from school holidays the major source of congestion on our roads is caused by the School run. Everyone knows about it but they are too Selfish and Lazy to do anything about it. Just think the money you would save by having one car in the household?

'Drive your kids, kill your kids!' - hard hitting but it is the truth!

'But I need my car to go to work?' - the solution is car sharing, it is more social and reduces petrol consumption. Why not even catch the bus? What about walking? Is the pace of life that fast these days?

I am not saying give up the second car, just think a little bit more about how it is used? Read more

I always vote but it occurred to me that it's not easy to know what
parties stand for without trawling through their boring rhetoric.

According to Labour's boring rhetoric we were goimg to get a referendum, weren't we?

I came across this weird vehicle on the web and I saw a LHD one in the far East . of all places

There are loads for sale in the States , but does anybody know if they were sold in Japan with RHD ?

It's perfect for my needs ( not with the 4.0 litre petrol engine though ) , I reckon if they sold it here in RHD with a roughly 160 - 180 bhp diesel they would do well . Read more

Chancellor Alistair Darling will delay a 2p rise in fuel duty for six months in the Budget, the BBC has learned.

The rise, announced in last year's Budget, had been due to come into effect on 1 April but will be postponed due to soaring crude oil prices.

Sorry about delay in replying; took my eye off the board for a moment :-)

I'm afraid I can't advise re. the wishbone as I've not had to do any work in that area but I did change the timing belt when I first got car (came without history & I read somewhere that the belts have to be done quite often) The main problem is that the offside engine mount has to be removed, I also found that I couldn't get the timing marks to line up so had to resort to tipexing however still an easy job as IMRC the tensioner is springloaded.

Have a x-reg Honda Accord 1.8 vtec. It has been unused for 4 months. Once in a while the car is started now and then and driven around the block. The battery went flat few weeks ago. Just got around to putting in a new one. The car starts with no problems and drives without problems apart from when you rev the engine (in neutral) and lift your foot off the accelerator the engine rev drops down to zero and hence the engine stops. Any idea what the problem is? Read more

bought a car off a decent chap exactly 2 months ago. He promised to mail through the docs to DVLA several times , but hasn't done so . He won't answer his phone to me . He's in Durham, I'm in London .

The car has had to be off road on a mate's drive , but I now need to run it . How can I get insurance & tax without the V5 ? All I have is one tiny sliver off his old V5

Finally, any tips on specialists on insuring ' classic ' ( pre 2001 ) Mini Coopers , and what is their annual VED ( 1275 cc ) ?

It was mentioned in another place that I visit, that it seems that people with multiple motorcycles insured on a single policy might only have one of the vehicles on the Motor Insurers Database. The example mentioned was with Carol Nash and he had four bikes on his policy, but only one on the MID.

I have two bikes on a policy with the same broker and the second wasn't on the MID I phoned and they sent the info again while I was on the phone, although I don't know how long the MID takes to get updated.

Just a heads-up. Check at www.askmid.com/askmid.aspx

Named, as it would appear to be mainly with them, no shame as they were quick to act and pleasant on the phone - which was a freebie 0800 number ;)

I read (in a newspaper IIRC) that the insurance companies have to update the MID within seven days of any changes or they get hit with a big fine.

If running "cleaner" cars costs less[?] and they're planning to "show the lifetime cost" of running them; will that include the consumption penalty and huge cost of servicing the emissions junk every 50,000 - or will that be quietly hidden.

[I was shocked to learn that a V8 Wange-Wover costs more to run than a 307 - never knew that...

Headline is 'lifetime cost' but the figure is 10 years.>>

10yrs is absolutely ludicrous. We have 5 cars in our family of 4 and the average age is 15yrs [admittedly one is 28]. Greenery would be encouraged by gradually reducing the car licence to zero over 25yrs. [probably wouldn't help the manufacturing industry much, though]

I`m looking around for the best deals to buy nearly new 1yr old Fords the best deals I`ve found so far are at Motorpoint, do they have any hidden costs with purchases not listed on their site.

Are the cars they sell serviced and taxed etc?

Any idea where I can pick up better deals?

Any pitfalls to watch out for when buying through car supermarkets?

It depends where you live. I used Fords of Winsford two years ago to buy a Mondeo. It was in immaculate condition (it still is) and the deal was done with a minimum of fuss. There's no haggling. The price in the catalogue is the price you pay. But Winsford is in Cheshire and if you are in Sussex that is totally useless information.

By the way they had 30 or 40 each of Focus and Mondeo models so there was plenty of choice.

I can't recommend them too highly (and I have absolutely no connection with the company).
