In replacing the front brake pads, I see the new pads have this interesting clip on outside of outer pad. As the previous set didn't have the clip, I'm unsure where/how this clip is supposed to be used. Does it just sit there? Is it supposed to wrap around the caliper in some way? Any insight?

I have broken the aerial on my Isuzu Rodeo pickup.
Quote from dealer is £170ish supply & fit or £70ish (+ VAT, I think) supply only.
Does anyone know where I could source one cheaper please??
many thanks Read more
Just spend the £70. It will fit, it will be at the correct angle, it will have the short piece of lead that goes down the pillar already attached, and the said lead will have the correct connector on it to mate to the existing wire.
hi
my handbook tells me to press the clutch when starting the engine
why do i have to do this ,and if i dont will it damage the car in anyway

I was competing in an off-road event. The handbrake button had been locked in for ease of handbrake turns, and it was parked in gear because it was on a bit of a slope.
I leaned in the window to start it, and let it warm up for a few minutes. I turned the key, it started, and ran!
I try to always press the clutch now before I start any car!
Well known national group - credulous son told need new CAT [1.4i, 114,000] cost 'around £400 all in'. I paid MoT fee, drove 2 miles to garage we usually use, 'sailed through' MoT - completely different emission readings, way below WKNG's. Usual garage not surprised, apparently local WKNG has a 'reputation' .
Returned to WKNG branch for explanation. Showed me their catalogue...'depending where the Lambda goes it's this one at £200 or that one at £300 plus labour plus vat - no, we've nothing cheaper'.
Told cats'r'us etc on internet around 50 notes and asked had they done the test properly - i.e. cat stabilisation, then last 5secs of 30 secs properly warmed up etc.. Showed me 'oil 80deg' on printout.......became defensive and belligerent.
Didn't get money back - letter to VOSA/trading standards.
Sorry if this is old hat to regulars but it's a new one on me.

You can save monies by getting your car tested at one of these instead of your (not always so) friendly main dealer....
www.moneysavingexpert.com/travel/cheap-mot#find
If your local council MOT testing centre is not listed here ring that Councils main switch board who will be able to help you.
One of HJ's contributors in the paper said this was a good way to sell.

I have lost my ford focus key and the car is locked up outside my house !!
Ok the car is a focus 1.8 ghia h/b model t reg 1999 {this bit now added to the subject header as per the 3 separate requests you didn't see!}
has anyone goy ideas as to how i can get a replacemrnt key and also on the likely cost ?
thanks for your help Read more
As far as starting the car is concerned, you need two working keys in order to program a third.
If you only have one working key, then the only way you can get a second key programmed is by taking it to a Ford dealer.
How did you manage to program the first new key you bought, if you had no working keys ?!
i ive a x reg year 2001 vectra 1.8ls,had engine management light on for a few months, finaly got it taken to garage today, faults were knock sensor-replaced-throttle body-cleaned up etc-they said the car was bone dry of oil, they put oil in it etc but said its burning oil??ive smelt this on way home,is this because of running it dry of oil?wat damage could have been done etc?it starts, drives fine sounds alot better than before, they said to check my oil every 200 miles and keep topping up and the sensor in exhaust mite level it self out and the burning of oil might go away.what has my partner done to my car.

I was looking forward to a ride in bro-in-law's Skoda VRS estate. Firstly, because it seems to have 200bhp under the bonnet and secondly, bro-in-law can use his police driving skills to make swift and entertaining progress without scaring the bejasus out of the passengers. Unfortunately my enjoyment was dampened by the piercing drone of a wheel bearing about to expire. Neither bro-in-law nor his missus had thought anything was amiss; they thought it was road noise from the fat tyres and had been present since they bought the car. Sis-in-law thought I was trying to find fault because it was a Skoda and got a bit prickly, but the bearing has since been replaced under warranty.
It made me think of a few noises that I can diagnose by sound alone; driveshafts clicking, propshafts clicking (but differently), worn brake shoes and brake pads grinding, cracked coil spring rattle, door seal whistle, big end rattle, main bearing rumble, timing chain clatter, tappet rattle and exhaust blowing.
Perhaps other Backroomers would like to complete the list ?

On a similar subject about ignorance of things motoring, I was terrified while being driven by my brother-in-law recently at high speed down some country roads at night. I couldn't see very far in front and I was sure he couldn't either. When I asked him about his headlamp height adjuster he wasn't sure what I was talking about. After much searching by him it transpired that it was at its highest setting (i.e. set for heavy towing) and was pointing the lights steeply downwards. "RTFM" springs to mind - maybe a warning message should be attached to those switches.
Hopefully a simple question!
Attempting to replace the rear wash wipe to the car, apparently it is some specialist clip-on thing which is part of a moulded arm, so the chap in Halfords said, so they do not stock it.
Any idea where i can get one from please? I assume it is straight forward to replace?

Halfords do sell a suitable replacement, have a look at the fitment guide on the wiper stand. Just bought one for mine, looks like a Valeo wiper, good quality not cheap though. Fits well, just doesnt have quite the same shape as the OEM Ford wiper.
Conversely the Halfords own brand front wiper set was cheap, and the drivers side has a spoiler also, looks similar to the original Ford ones also, which is a bonus.
I have a 2000 polo (56,000 miles) and recently it hasnt been starting properly:
First thing in the morning if will start fine, but after driving, leaving it for 5 mins (shopping etc!) it wont start back up again. It turns over but will not kick in. even with acclerator tapping. I have to leave the car for about an hour before it will start back up again. the epc light will come on when it does start up again as well. I'm totally confused...
Any help would be much appreciated

The coolant temp sensor would be a good first check.
Isn't that clip used to mount the pad to the piston (i.e clips into the piston recess)?
Most pads I've used in the last 5 years seem to have had them
