Toyota FJ series - motorprop

I came across this weird vehicle on the web and I saw a LHD one in the far East . of all places

There are loads for sale in the States , but does anybody know if they were sold in Japan with RHD ?

It's perfect for my needs ( not with the 4.0 litre petrol engine though ) , I reckon if they sold it here in RHD with a roughly 160 - 180 bhp diesel they would do well .

Looks like it only comes with the 4.0 V6 petrol; is built in Japan for the LHD North America market. Info from:

Saw one in Frankfurt last year. Funky, if you like a retro- styled Land Cruiser revival thingy.

If its the retro thing Im thinking of, theres two recently appeared in Northampton area - quite striking by all accounts.

Very popular in N California.I first spotted them last year, and noticed that ski resort 'car' parks were full of them this year. Best in yellow.

They do sell them here - it's called the 120 series. OK, so it doesn't have the styling, but everything else is the same, and it comes with a 3 litre 200hp diesel.

120 SERIES ? Not on Toyota's website

have looked, but it's nothing of the sort . Thanks anyway .

OK, it's called the 'Land Cruiser', as opposed to the 'Land Cruiser Amazon'. The Amazon is a 100 series, the Landcruiser is a 120 series. The old Colorado is a 90 series, and the old shape Amazon is an 80 series. The new Amazon is a 200 series, for anyone that's interested.

This is the only Toyota Landcruiser worthy of consideration in my mind, the FJ40.

I was in Holland the other week, saw this car and screeched to a halt and reversed at high speed to see what it was.. Now I need one. At the time of writing there is only one on Autotrader, at over £20,000 (they were $27,000 new, that's dollars).

When I save the pennies, will I be better off making some friends on le continong and getting a LHD? Having the wheel on the wrong side does not bother me at all.

What does the panel think?

Edit - I think it's LHD only. But I'm wondering if indeed it will be cheaper abroad??

Toyota FJ series - Trilogy

Is this the one you mean? www.toyota.com.au/fj-cruiser/range I spotted one in Australia in January. Well and truly available in RHD.

Toyota FJ series - Auristocrat

Manufactured by Hino (part of the Toyota group) for Toyota. Intended for the US market, but also sold in Japan, New Zealand and Australia. Never sold officially by Toyota in Europe.

The versions you see of the FJ Cruiser and Prado in the UK are grey imports from Japan.

Bananastand asked: What does the panel think?

This part of the panel wonders if you enjoy being stared at.

I've seen them lots of times whilst on holiday in the US.

I love its styling.

To me, it has real character that is missing from most other Toyotas.

Go for it if you can afford the fuel bills.

There's an FJ regularly parked in a gated car park next to Woking BR station. I see it on the commute home, heading South. The square reg plate at the back says Jap import. It's white, with grey bumpers and cladding. Looks fantastic.

Bring it here Toyota, with a Lexus hybrid under the bonnet, or the land cruiser diesel.

The Honda Element was in a similar vein. Honda should've brought that here too.
Toyota FJ series - Happy Blue!

Not quite the Honda Element but Nissan brought the Cube over which was similar. Not sure how successful it was. Friends have one and its roomy but not that exciting.

Production of the FJ Cruiser is due to end this year.

I'm not too dismayed at the fuel bills as my Outlander does about, 24 mpg, probably due to the absurdly heavy and high-friction four wheel drive.

John Boy - I don't mind being stared at at all, in fact I am a chronic attention seeker. I was in a DFS advert once, the "rockstar" one. Ha ha.

I've always fancied a Nissan Cube, but the high likelihood of being stared at is one of the things which has put me off.

Personal taste is so interesting. Whilst I tend to like "boxy" cars, the FJ just looks silly to me - like a full-size Tonka toy. My other half made an interesting observation - "It's like 3 different cars joined together". I think fashion has a part in this. When it first appeared, I was very taken by the looks of the Kia Soul. Now, I think it looks dated.

The reason I like the Cube is that it's so close to the essence of a car i.e. a box on 4 wheels. The Cube and the Lotus Seven are the only two cars which can always turn my head. I think it's because they're both stripped down to the basics.
