I don't really want to reignite the debate about the relative merits of the (myriad!) different ways of polishing a car, but I thought it might be useful to have a thread for particular items that BRoomers had found useful/effective.

This is prompted by my recent purchase of some Simoniz 'brake dust repellent alloy cleaner' which seems to combine a wheel cleaner with some sort of coating (silicone?) that leaves the surface a bit slippery. I was originally looking for wheel wax or similar, but this was on offer in Halfords, so I thought I'd try it, and I have to say that I am pleasantly surprised. The wheel cleaning bit is effective - not as fierce/acidic as some, but still OK - and so far (a few days) the wheels have stayed surprisingly clean. I might even try it in the engine bay... Not much use to you but recently we have had a new window cleaner. He
doesnt use a ladder but long water rods with a brush on the end. No
drying off the windows of course

I'm always suspicious of this method as all that grotty dirty water from the windows then runs down over one's house exterior which in my case has black tudor beams etc. thus leaving stains on these! It's a lazy method and nothing will beat doing one's own either from outside or from the inside (as I do) with some difficulty.

Hi I have a 2.0 xantia estate V reg Feb 2000 from new.
Once when the suspension went suddenly hard it was the levelling sensor that caused it, Now the back has got harder and harder and bad on bumps, it was ok with heavuy load on but now its all the time.
Is it spheres which I don`t think I have ever had, car has done 265000miles

Also smoke can suddenly pour out the vents when heater on!!! Driving along, opened both windows and it looked like the car was on fire or I was smokingt too many fags!!!

Also not blowing very much at all but I have read on here that it could be the pollen filter as that was changed once at 5000 miles svce. The last I had at a proper garage...

just had new fan put in. the smoke or fog really clouds up the windscreen even on cold. Read more

Deffo needs a new matrix - if you have got to steam out the vents stage then it is well past radweld or similar. New matrix is only £30 - trouble is fitting it takes 10 hours +. Given the number of cheap Xantias around I'd bin this one and put 200k on another one :-)

I've a portable DVD player which normally sits behind one of the front seats.

The problem is the sound is quiet via the on-board speakers or headphones when the volume is at max..

Could I get a amplifier to sit between the player and headphones using the 3.5jacks, or can I get a kit to use the CD/Radio and speaker system.

Thanks Read more

You may find that your existing radio has an audio input, have a look in the handbook. Otherwise there are plenty of audio amplifiers available, have a look ot Maplin.

I ordered the new Mk5 VW Golf Estate from a Dealership in late October 2007.

Because it was a Factory build I was told delivery could take up to 12 weeks.
Just got off the phone to the Dealer who is now saying end of February early March delivery which makes a minimum of 18 weeks.

There seems no point in getting upset but I am left wondering how common this problem is with all motor manufacturers and whether there should be a penalty clause in favour of the consumer.

Has the OP ordered a DSG version? There are reports that delivery on DSG equiped cars are regularly taking 15 to 18 weeks due to demand.

As for car contracts, a friends contract for his KIA Ceed holds the price, a fixed delivery date and the option to get out or change cars if this date changes.

Couple of points,

I am taking my xtype 3 litre awd to france for a ski trip, it has the 225/45 y r17 wheels, in the owners manual it says not to fit snow chains to them, only the 16 inch wheels can have chains, what should i do risk it and not have them?

Also as it is a awd do it need to put chains on all 4 wheels?

Thanks

In most cases winter tyres are also based on the smaller rim size. Hence you will still need to source a set of wheels.

However I would have thought with AWD and all the electronics any chains could stay in the boot. Its probably lack of concentration going down hill rather than traction up hill you will need to worry about! Thats where winter tyres really count.

Please could anyone advise me, as I can't find any information on this anywhere?

I recently returned to the UK after spending 5 months in Cyprus. I had bought a (2002) Nissan Micra whilst in Cyprus and shipped it over here in October.
Now that I have it insured, do I have any period of grace in which to drive it on the highway?

Secondly, I wish to register the car but am having problems completing the paperwork. Does anyone know of a reputable company or agent who will take this on for me from start to finish?

Thanks very much.

My best Christmas present this tear was a TomTom One, from my wife. I've used it for a few journeys, and I'm impressed.
I wondered if any Backroomer has tried it out in the air? I glide, and it would be useful to be able to set the airfield as 'home' in case I got lost(easy to do with low sun and haze) Theoretically, I can't see why it shouldn't work.

My Garmin definitely does not work in the air. ....... even if
I held it up to the plane window.

Don't some aircraft have window glazing which prevents transmission of GPS signals?

My 2001 Y reg 1.4s Civic is making a whirring noise which the Honda garage has diagnosed a coming from the gearbox. The oil level has been checked and is OK. The car has done 66000 miles with a full Honda service history. I have been quoted almost £2000 for a new gearbox and clutch replacement. Should the gearbox have lasted longer than this and can anyone advise on alternatives to the Honda solution,
