Hi

I'm looking for a replacement car after a bit of a bump! I've got up to 2K to spend and am really only looking for a small runaround. I don't do many miles (perhaps 100 per week) and very few long journeys.

The most important considerations for me are low running costs (good mpg, low tax and cheap insurance). Not bothered diesel/petrol but something that could pull a small trailer occasionally would be helpful.

Any advice would be gratefully appreciated because I'm completely lost at the moment!

madf: curious to know whether you are re-opening this old thread, or are you replying to the OP after one year?

The following faults have happened with no warning.
Yaris just "played up" on its normal, absolutely standard, regular, no snow or silly weather, traffic free commute home.

1.The radio works until the lights are switched then the sound is killed.

2. With the radio working, pop in a CD and after a few seconds it spits it out again.

Hmmmmm ! I just popped out to check I had the facts and Mr Murphy has been around cos it is now working normally.

So It appears to have an intermittent fault.
( It always starts first time and the electrics appear to be OK.)
Any pointers to the possible source ofthe problem?

My mondeo mk3 tdci 130 occasionally idles erratically. Then in gears 4,5 and 6 it will accelerate to 1550 ish revs. Dipping the clutch will have the engine returning to normal idle speed.

The cruise control decided on a wee trick the other day. It would gain 2-3 mph when engaged then I pressed the - button to bring the speed back down it did so but A minute later it accelerated all by itself, i disengaged it at 100mph, later the same day It did it again and it cut itself off t 105 mph. not done it since.

Any ideas or has it happened to anyone else? Read more

Can anyone advise on buying a van? I need transit sized workhorse rugged enough not to fall apart on tracks, yet economical to run? Wheres the best place to buy second hand from ie van supermarket? Is a volkswagen worth the extra money? Any advice welcome Read more

SuperBuyer

We run a number of Transits (not the new shape - mostly 03,53 reg) and these rarely have problems - indeed the only expensive problem we've had in the 8months I've been at the company has been a new clutch (DMF) on a lwb pickup (140K on the clock, driven by, ahem, 'lads' - 'fetchers' generally, 18-20 picking stuff up from merchants)

Re the farm tracks - you can get transits that are raised, generally used by the utilities (Central Networks certainly, BT also) - these might be worth a look?

What are you going to be carrying? This will impact on whether a SWB, MWB, LWB hi-roof etc....

You also need to be careful about weights - with the new rules regarding vans over 3.5t being limited etc... I don't profess to be an expert, but you need to consider it!

Other vans to consider are the Vivaro (or any of its brother which I think are Traffic, Relay?), but definitely avoid the LDV vans. All I've read about these are problems! Anyone on here confirm this is true in the field?

Anyone know when the cam belt needs changing on a Scenic petrol (1.4), 2002 model? I read somewhere that the interval may have been reduced by Renault Read more

I still have it as 72,000 for the whole lot to be changed; best check with Renfault to see if there's any revisions.

Car is a 2003 (03) Peugeot 206 1.4 HDI van

Car has just had 4 new injectors/clutch/gearbox at 70k miles

It cuts out usually when cold, slowing for a corner or junction.

It wont restart for half an hour and then idles perfectly.

Any ideas. Diagnostics say injector fault but not much else.

Could it be the high pressure pump at fault?

Cheers.

Those must've been cheap re-cons; new ones are nearer £2000. As you say - not a clue.

See if you can get that code - there isn't one for injectors [plural] but there are quite a few [of 3,000] that cover precise faults with individual ones.

It could well be a failing high-pressure pump [amonst many other things] which will mean that those "new" injectors are now frag-contaminated and scrap.

Precise rail-pressure readings via live-data [can they even do that] is the only way to tell.

2002 Matiz. Tried to read output of diagnostic socket but pin outs conflict with those given . Bought a hand held U480 memoscan OBD2/CAN tester , it powers up ok then fails reporting linking error. The pin outs again conflict presumably. How can I get the flash codes without going into meltdown and what is bugging the tester.

It's pretty normal for those e-bay code-readers to fail to communicate or produce unfathomable codes. It's data-flow is too fast for the pedestrian OBD-II and it's not CAN.

There are no flash codes on one this late. Only a specialist scanner will communicate.

I noticed in my area they are always Derv/Unleaded/Super Unleaded. Is this the case with all stations in all areas? Or does it vary with brand or location??

Weird one but bugging me.
