Can you imagine a politician saying that? >>

To put it into context GB would not so JC gets my vote - out of the two of them that is!

As you'll see elsewhere I'm considering a new XF diesel, and one of the problems with ordering a car based on reviews is that you (obviously) haven't driven it. Now I understand the engine's the same as the one in the S-Type, so I wondered if anyone had driven one of these (and ideally a Merc E270CDi or 280CDi - cos I've got the 280CDi and a comparison would be great).

If you have, what were your impressions of the engine in terms of flexibility and poke - specifically responsiveness when overtaking in "A road" situations? I'm not that interested in supercar performance, but I do appreciate the confidence of putting my foot down and knowing something will happen, which I do have in my Merc.

>commuting 12 miles each way, mostly A roads and dual carriageway, plus family holidays..

Pretty similar to my 50 mile roundtrip up and down the A33 each day so it would be a no brainer for me, although I'd choose petrol rather than diesel.

I use an XJ8 that should be made available on the NHS for anyone with high blood pressure.

Kevin...

PS. Whichever you choose - stick to the standard wheels.

Hello all,

I've just got a Honda Accord CDTI 2005 car.

Great car, but... I can't find a trip meter to tell me the mpg I'm getting.

I've flicked through the manual twice, pressed all the buttons I can find, and nought.

I can find miles traveled, odemeter, outside temp etc. but no MPG.

It there really no MPG meter on this car?

Note: I have the built in sat nav center console thingie.
Note: Filling up after 530 miles has given me 44mpg.

Thanks

Hi Jeff

My wife's best friend has one of these (2005 '55' plate CDTI Executive). It has everything BUT a fully featured trip computer. Like yourself, she was surprised by this, as she assumed it would be part of the spec.

Still, I think everything else about the car makes her smile, so she can live without the fuel consumption readout.

My 03 car has just about worn out the original pirelli P6000 at 22,000 miles. High speed stability has been excellent. Has anyone experienced equivalent performance from other makes with maybe less road noise? All contributions gratefully received. Read more

My son has got an SLK with Michelin HP's on. He reckons they are good.

My indicator makes the right noise when I indicate right but the lit arrow on dash (and the actual lights) don't always work.

Indicating left works fine and the hazards work fine. I take it the most likely culprit is the indicator switch itself, especially considering the Hazards works the dash arrow and exterior lights every time. Read more

Had a look at the indicator stalk which was properly connected, when taken apart, the contacts looked okay, so replaced the stalk unit and it works fine now.

Problem with indicator arm. Removed the switchblock etc, fixed and re-fitted.
Now air bag light comes on and flickers.
Just coincidence or have I botched it?? Read more

You need - at the very least - a Haynes manual to warn you of the dangers you just risked.

It might be better to take this to a local garage for investigation. Fiddling with live/faulty airbag systems has killed people.

Hello Everyone , I am on a low budget to buy a car that will at least last me a year until I can afford decent one . My budget is under £800. I would like to buy a Honda ,I know it will be relatively old . However during my research I have found that they are good cars even if they are old . I would like some advice as to which Honda is more economical , for repairs and insurance and of course not forgetting reliable .
I have seen a 1995 Honda Civc 1.4 going for £695 is this reasonable.
Look forward to your advice .

I've received one of those 'did you know' emails that crop up from time to time. It reckons that the fuel pump symbol on the fuel gauge shows which side of the car the fuel filler is on depending on which side the nozzle is depicted. This is supposed to be for new drivers and hire car users convenience when entering fuel stations.

Yes, and succeeded with a few skinned knuckles.
Cleaning the clag from in front of the radiator was as bad.
It may not have been the world's greatest design but it sure was a hoot to drive - the only car I've ever had where I never bothered with the clutch once on the move.
It dated from the days when new cars were often innovative rather than just loaded with tuppenny-halfpenny gadgets - remember those, l'Escargot?

I've got a Defender 200tdi and she runs like a dream for 100 miles of so then get lumpy and underpowered for a few seconds and cuts out. Looks like it's some kind of fuel issue as if I remove the fuel filter and turn the ignition over fuel comes through - if I then empty the filter and replace it works fine again for 100 miles of so. Full power when going and no visible signs of anything untoward. I've replaced the fuel filter to no effect, replaced the lift pump .. still no effect and even replaced the petrol cap as someone mentioned it could be a vacuum build up. Still happening and not sure where to look next. Spoke to a local mech and his view was 'hmmm ... fuel ... could be anything' !

Anyone here any ideas on possible solution of next point of action? Read more

Hi Ian,

I noticed you had the same problem quite a while back, I now also have the same problem and am struggling to find the solution, how did you get on?

Kind regards,

I've got an escort as above, in which if you lock the passenger side door and then unlock it from the outside and try and open it the door won't open. If you open it from the inside its fine. If you also unlock it from the inside and open it from the outside its fine as well.

Any ideas ?!

Its not got central locking. Read more

Sometimes the Lock barrel has a lug which connects to and moves the cable or rod, if the lug is worn or has slipped, the movement is not enough to shift the rod / cable.
Try undoing Door card and pulling the cable/rod manually from the lock, if it moves then either the cable/rod is slack or the movement from the barrel is not enough. Chances are one of these may need replacing or repairing.
