Hello, 1996 V6 Vectra, has an ignition problem, firing on 4 cylinders, has been plugged into Tech 2 which only indicated No2 and 5 cylinders not functioning. All leads checked individually and 1,3,4,6 all sparking but not 2&5, coilpack removed and coil that supplies 2&5 cracked and melted. Coilpack replaced but 2&5 still not sparking!, any suggestions welcome, have been told this could be an ignition amplifier problem, but do have a clue what or where this unit is on the Vectra.

Hello, i sorted out the ignition problem on the Vectra, when the coilpack expired it damaged the ECU, Tech 2 was showing absolutely no faults, a replacement ECU has the car running smooth again. On trying to obtain a replacement ECU i was assured by quite a few "gents" that all V6 ECUs were interchangable!, this is not the case!. The ident numbers on the ECU body must match ie HH for HH, GT for GT, etc, AVS Vauxhall in Nottingham were very helpful.

Hi folks,

Any help and advice would be appreciated. I'm currently looking for a new used car to run into the ground as my 8 year old petrol Mondeo finally starts to give up the ghost and look like costing pots of money to fix.

My run is a bit of a killer. It takes me over some very bad roads, plenty of potholes, corners and steep hills. Almost every part of the Mondeo's suspension has been replaced at least once in the 18 months I've been doing the journey. It's a fairly long one as well and I'd say I average between 100 and 130 miles a day depending on which roads are closed on a given day; currently this costs in the region of £70-80 a week just in petrol -- I dread to think what it cost in tyres, suspension parts and servicing.

My thinking is that a solidish diesel may even pay for itself. The more miles to the gallon it does the more marked the savings I make, given the number of miles I do. Just to give you an idea of the way my mind's been working, I've been looking at a low mileage 1.4 TDi Ford Fusion amongst other things, not the most fun or glamorous vehicle admittedly but cheap servicing and excellent fuel economy. Other thoughts were a Rover 75 with the BMW diesel engine or a Skoda diesel.

I've got a budget to 7k, which I'd be looking to pay back in 3 years, so the vehicle would need to last that long if it cost the full amount. I'd be interested in hearing people's suggestions, either along similar lines or, if you think I'm approaching things from the wrong angle, from a completely different perspective.

It would be really useful just to get some fresh ideas.

Thanks

What about a Verte? Its a Ford Falcon Au III pick up, built in Australia and the saloon version iis very popular with taxi drivers It was imported to the UK by Verte, a firm set up by the boss of AC Cars, but failed (because of poor distribution/marketing) but the motors live on. They have the ford 4 litre straight six engine BUT its LPG powered and built that way by Ford. Everything about it says Ford. The advantage is the fuel costs - LPG cost around 52 pence a litre and if you think there might be a loss of power, you would be hard pressed to tell with 4 litre lump.
You might be able to tell that I own one. Its not for sale. But they do come up every now and then on ebay. Parts are plentiful (in Australia) and the shipping costs are not that bad. They are very solid cars (or UTES). Mine is an automatic with air conditioning, you can also get them with cruise control and electric windows.

Yes; I know exactly what you mean.

[That's why they invented the Guillotine - they couldn't get an electric chair to work....]

Hullo,

I'm after a new motor in the next couple of weeks, since my old MKII Golf Driver is on its way to the great big scrapyard in the sky. I have a number of requirements and ideas, but I'd be grateful for any feedback! My feedback is *about* £2000, but there's a bit of flexibility there.

First and foremost, it has to have room for at least two mountain bikes and two people. This limits things to an estate or hatchback, nothing much smaller than the Golf. It has to be fun to drive - I'm not bothered about silly power or speed, but something I can chuck round corners would be good. Economy is of less note as I don't do *that* many miles, but I am quite aware of the silly price of petrol. Insurance... Up to about group 15ish, at the most. I'm not really bothered about toys as coming from a car with three working doors and one working windscreen blower anything is going to be a step up. Reliability is - of course - a concern.

With all this in mind, the one car that's really caught my eye is the phase 1 Subaru Impreza 2.0 Sport, non turbo version. Not stupid fast, but it should go on for a while and AWD should make it a good laugh to drive. I've also been looking at 1.8T Octavias, but they're a few hundred quid more.

Any ideas?

The Aerodeck sounds intriguing... I do like the sound of a screaming Vtec!

Hello All,

Vaguely thinking of changing the Mondeo, what is putting me off is that the p-ex price is not great, the car it is worth more to me that I am likely to get for it, though I am not up for selling it privately, I would rather drive in one car and drive out another.

While I am mulling that over I have another quandary, I am (again vaguely) thinking of an X-Type, would really quite like a 2.2d estate though I reckon the spec I want would be more than I really want to spend.

Its not quite bangernomics though having a 5.5 year old car that has done 125k and drives pretty much as new has lead me to believe in running an older car that has already largely depreciated.

So I am thinking possibly of a slightly older V6 saloon, not the 2.1, I have driven one, it lacks torque, the 2.5 is much more flexible yet alone the 3.0. I am working from home now so mileage/MPG less of an issue than it was, I have done 12k in the last 12 months.

SE or Sport - I am not too fussed, depends on the spec of the individual car.

The question is manual or auto on this car, the manual is 5 speed which is fine, not too high a top ratio, and I think the Jaguar "J" gate auto offers a Tiptronic type function?

Any thoughts / experiences / comments?

IJ, perhaps you could look at my Q in the X-Type Impressions thread, thanks.

I never trusted his judgments anyway. He is a good entertainer - but his knowledge, better not discuss that :)

Off topic:

Our banking system is inherently un-secure. Any one can set up a direct debit for nearly anything with just sort code & a/c number. There's no other verification. This is total shambles.

I purchased a 2004 Nissan almera Tino SEover the weekend and I keep noticing (several hours apart) a beeping when inside the house. Any ideas what might cause this?

Could it be vibration from passing traffic causing a partial alarm to sound or a malfunction?

Appreciate any ideas.

Thanks

I just rang my local FIAT dealer to arrange for them to check out an electrical problem under warranty. They say they have been told by HEAD OFFICE not to book in any more jobs!
I couldn't get any more sense out of the girl on the phone, and she gave me the names of two other local dealers.
This is my first new car since 1965 ( a MINI COOPER. LMB 472C £590) and I'm somewhat taken aback to find a Franchised dealer just saying "we can't do it, go somewhere else". Should I just "go somewhere else" or try contacting FIAT UK? Read more

Hi

My Scenic (2003) has a central console that shows information such as CD track, time and temperature. Over Christmas we noticed that the left side of the display had dimmed... duly followed by the right... I'm assuming there are bulbs behind it (the information is still displayed, and is correct, but is very dim).

How the hell do I get in there to change the bulb?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Rick. Read more
