As the owner of a 55 plate multispace diesel, I am interested in finding out how PSA change the power output of the 1.6 HDi engine as fitted to Ford Fiesta and similar. Anyone out there know? Read more
I noticed when I went through one of those speed traps that flashes up your speed on a board that at a speedo indicated 30 mph, it said I was doing 28mph.
Thats fine, but my dad's TomTom which also tells you how fast your going, says that at an indicated 30, im doing 26, so which is most likely to be right?
The differential between what TomTom says and my speedo says gets higher the faster I go which I assume would also happen with the speed trap, but which do I trust? Read more
Might I respectfully suggest that those people who are so carefully observing the increments on
their toys should be paying a little bit more attention to the road ahead? ;-)
No you may not.
Hi everyone been a while since I posted but I have a question that no one at work can asnwer. As part of my job I am going to have to tow a trailer of equipment with one of the company vehicles (Merc V280). The trailer weight is upto 1.5 tonnes and the vehicle weight is about 2.5 tonnes so I am told. I am going to have to take a towing test as I passe my test in 2002 but I have no idea about what class of vehicle/ licence etc as most talk about a combine weight of upto 3.5 tonnes. Any ideas or suggestions on how to proceed or findd out what the heck to do are greatly appreciated.
many thanks

Kerb weights don't apply here. The licensing and tacho regs are based on the MAM [maximum authorized mass] of the vehicle and trailer combination.
Even if both are empty and weigh far less than the limits, it's the allowable maximum that applies.
Both the vehicle and trailer will have weight plates that give the legal maximum weight [MAM/GVW/MVW/GVM/......] of each and the vehicle will also have a maximum train weight [GTW/MTW] that must not be exceeded.
Lateral ruts tend to develop at traffic lights. These try to seize the steering of my Skoda Fabia2 (2007) and try to take over the steering. I have not experienced this with any other of the many cars I have driven. What is likely to be wrong? If I ask the dealer, he will probably use the time-honoured forumula, "It is a characteristic of this model range". Read more
I can only comment on the 1.9d Roomster. Ride for the class of car is nearly in the same parish as the 306 - nice soft and compliant with enough of sporty hardness to encourage fast driving. Certainly not hard or harsh.
Recently was given a P-Reg Ford Escort TD that hadn't really moved for 12 months, 44k on clock.
It wouldn't start but was push-started and taken to garage for MOT, passed no problem and they reported no issues with battery (they were asked to look at it).
For a month it started on about the 3rd attempt, each time turning over slower and slower. Eventually after a good few cold morning starts it gave up. A neighbour looked at it and filled up the battery with water, gave me a jump and car drove great for a couple of weeks... then a couple of cold days and not starting first time and it doesn't sound as if it will start for many more days ahead.
Any suggestions?
Is it most likely to simply be needing a new battery (ill put a new alternator belt on anyway - heard it squeezing a little) Read more

I have used Conwy Land Rover when I've been up in Wales, they have, I believe, a reasonable reputation.
Damn just remembered there's a Jaguar dealer in the same road....walks off muttering "XKF"

My earliest driving experience on the road was a Case tractor and trailer when I was about eight years old , bouncing up and down on the metal pan seat with the farm hand standing on the tow hitch behind me.
This was in the wilds of Northumberland where if you saw more that a couple of cars a day you thought it was rush hour.
I had driven in the fields off road for probably three years before that , steering the tractor while the load of turnips was forked out for the cattle.
This was in the days before even UK law , never mind the EEC prevented children going anywhere near a tractor.
I still get misty eyed when at a local steam fair last year they must have had thirty plus little old grey Fergies....
Standard issue tractor driver outfit in the freezing winter was an ex army greatcoat belted with baler twine, topped off with flat cap and a Woodbine ....
No wonder my old man contracted double pneumonia and nearly died.
if your tyres lose grip in the wet it's called aquaplaning - well this morning I had the novel experience of turning the steering wheel on the motorway in high winds to find it made no difference to the direction I was travelling. Fortunately I had room to manouever to was able to lift off the throttle and on losing speed grip was restored. And no it's not a be-winged racing car just a bog standard Rover 214 with decent tyres.

Had an experience of driving down the same piece of autobahn in Germany twice in one week, both times in a 2.3 Capri but one had no spoilers and the second, just a small chin spoiler and the small bootlid spoiler-what a difference;thesecond one was so much more stable-particularly around a long LH sweep with slight adverse camber-this was at about 110 mph.in both cases.
- When starting my Peugeot 306 1.9TD Spinnaker, there is a slight 'cough' of white smoke from the exhaust! Immediately after this, the engine 'splutters' for a few seconds and the revs seem to fluctuate erratically around 1,000 - 1,200rpm (and on the odd occasion, the engine will stall).
The above only happens for a few seconds, until I depress the accelerator pedal.
- Around 3,500 - 4,000rmp, in any gear, there will be an obvious plume of white smoke, until I change gear.
- The accelerator seems to be getting less responsive with time, and sometimes takes around a second or two, to rev, after depression. (Only after starting, and only recently noticed)
I only notice the above if the car has stood for a few hours. i.e. Over night / During work.
Once ive had the engine running for a bit, it will start fine.
There are no obvious mis-fires in the engine, and it generally seems to drive as normal...
My best guess is that it's either:
A) An injector has gone down
B) Fuel timing is out
Ive read around, and most people suggest that white smoke is unburnt diesel.
Fuel filter looks brand new.
I did an oil & oil filter change over the weekend. and put a new Air Filter in too.
Any ideas as to what may be causing the dodgy starting, white smoke and reduced accelerator responsiveness, would be greatly appreciated.
I wanted some opinions before I start tampering!
Thanks
Tom

Hi, anymore happened with this?, my 406 HDi 2000 is the same, it only smokes for the first minute and feels like it is running on 3 cylinders but is okay once warmed up. The amount of white smoke I get is dependant on how long the car has stood. My glowplugs have been checked to be working.
I have a 2002 model that leaks into the rear right foot well when i try to use the rear wash wipe. Figured its a split hose/dodgy connector and have never used it since... staying over 80mph cleans the rear window very well:)
