I see this happen so often but am not sure who is in the right/wrong.
London.
Cyclist going down inside of traffic (whether in a cycle lane or not) and faster than cars (ie effectively under taking everything). Car wants to turn left at junction and very often has not looked in mirrors at fast approaching cyclist. Result frequent near misses (fortunately not seen actual hits too often).
Personally I stop to let cyclist go for the two reasons:
i) they are more vulnerable
ii) they seem never to be prepared to stop to let the car go instead they jut give a lot of verbal. The verbal doesn't bother me but I don't want to be involved in an accident.
If I had a guess I would say cyclist was in the wrong, but..... Read more

"full" treatment has been around far longer than TVRs existed.
snipped in accordance with the site policies.
Perhaps justifies a new thread from the man v auto one:
Drove a 3.0 Sport manual today.
Nice crisp V6, the chassis felt firm but absorbed ruts and bumps well, the steering was weighted much like the Mondeo, didn't hoon around so cant really comment on handling though it was surefooted and responsive enough.
Re performance, as expected and as per the above comment it didnt have that instant shove at low revs in any gear that the TDCi gives - less than 1800 in top and it still goes. Despite being 3.0ltr it pulled cleanly but not strongly by TDCi standards until getting on for 3000 from which it seemed to have a very linear delivery, the power building with the revs without a step, accordingly perhaps deceptively quick if using the revs, needle swing to 6000 + easily.
Kit - this car had optional full leather and also the optional elec sunroof which I would like, I value it on the Mondeo, though though no cruise, trip or column/wheel audio controls, also only a single non MP3 CD.
Nice dash binnacle though I prefer the centre console on the Mondeo where the climate controls etc are set into the ebony wood effect with the audio unit seperate, on the X-Type the climate system and audio gives the impression of being one combined and rather large unit. I also didnt like the interior colour of this car, cream leather.
Reckon a 3.0 auto beckons though one with black leather and probably SE spec.

Thanks IJ.
Re a/r bar, not investigted, it is minor, might wait for the warmer weather or MOT time (April), that is if an X-Type does not beckon in the meantime ;-)
A friend has just bought one of these. She doesn't know anything about cars - she just wanted a new red one. She got an excellent deal financially (i think) - took along her mother, hand-bag in hand, after having done internet research.
I've read CBC breakdown, but wanted to ask opinions from any owners.
What's it like, anything to look out for, etc.....
Thanks a lot Read more
DES MOINES, Iowa - Jane Hambleton has dubbed herself the "meanest mom on the planet." After finding alcohol in her son's car, she decided to sell the car and share her 19-year-old's misdeed with everyone ? by placing an ad in the local newspaper.
ADVERTISEMENT The ad reads: "OLDS 1999 Intrigue. Totally uncool parents who obviously don't love teenage son, selling his car. Only driven for three weeks before snoopy mom who needs to get a life found booze under front seat. $3,700/offer. Call meanest mom on the planet
I think we need a few more of these uncool parents Read more
I was watching an old repeat of Top Gear the other night where Clarkson drove an A8 Diesel from Lonfon-Edinburgh and Back.
He was saying that he turned the heating off to save fuel econmy, likewise he was driving on side lights in the rain rather than dipped beam.
Now I know that the air con compressor will increase fuel consumption but would you really notice extra fuel being used by using your heater?
Lights? Rear window demister? Etc?
What about using the radio?
I'm not condoning any of this, just want to know if there is a gain that is measurable. I would haev thought it would haev been too small to measure.
Thanks Read more
Car alternators are not very efficient - they do not contain any permant magnets so they need to use some of the energy generated to maintain a magnetic field in the coils. Car alternators are designed with cost and reliability in mind rather than efficiency.
There was link in the other thread about speed and fuel consumption - that site claims that the rear screen heater will increase consumption by 3-5%
The recent (very informative) thread on HGV gearboxes has reminded me to ask a question which has had me wondering.....
Does an equivalent "BMW syndrome" exist in trucking circles? I use the term without any particular prejudice towards drivers of the marque, but I hope it's understood what I mean.
For instance, would a trucker say, "just look at that - typical Eddie Stobart/Norbert Dentressangle driver!!" or "there's another tailgating (HGV) Volvo driver!"?. Or maybe refusing to let a MAN driver out at a junction on general principle? Read more
OldSock said ''typical Eddie Stobart/Norbert Dentressangle driver!''
We would say ''typical Stobbie or Nobby Dressingtable driver!!''
Most of the time I find myself saying typical Tipper Driver though.

Have an Octavia demo at the moment and the handbrake is on the RHS of the "transmission tunnel".
The Golf demo last month had it on the LHS of the "tunnel" and SWMBO complained that I kept bumping her when reaching for the handbrake.
VW UK brochure shows handbrake on RHS, VW Germany web-site shows it on the LHS, so LHD/RHD dependent or is it?
Question - for those of you with current model Golf's where is the handbrake in relation to the "tunnel" and seats?

The only advantage I found with an electric handbrake is you can't fail to put it on hard enough and you don't have to release it when you drive off - this was in an S type.
I know Audi redesigned the system on the A6 due to a high number of failures when first introduced. IIRC Audi A5 doesn't have one and new A4 is based on this design.

Toyota is already #2. Last year it became #1 beating GM for few months, but GM took lead again.
Hi,
I have finally parted with my saxo which I have had since passing my test 4 years ago.
I have 7K to spend on an Audi of Golf, or should I consider anything else??
Also is it worth going to auction to get a better price, the only thing that worries me with auctions is checking out the car ie no test drive etc. Read more
I'm presuming we are talking diesel here?
Get yourself a nice 130bhp Golf GTTDI - £7K should get you a decent spec last of the Mk4. pop over to uk-mkivs.net/forums/default.aspx and have a look at the stuff on there...
Usual things with these - check the service history (especially with regards to oil), look for body/alloy wheel damage etc..
I run a 150bhp 2004 53 reg GTI (diesel), with only 122K on the clock.
I wouldn't like to say whether it was wrong or not, but it's certainly tempting providence to say the least. Sometimes prudence must take priority over right and wrong!
