£7K to spen Audi A3 of Golf?? - rjtyrell
Hi,

I have finally parted with my saxo which I have had since passing my test 4 years ago.

I have 7K to spend on an Audi of Golf, or should I consider anything else??

Also is it worth going to auction to get a better price, the only thing that worries me with auctions is checking out the car ie no test drive etc.

You've got a good choice at this price range. If I were you I'd definitely check out a Focus. Alternatively a Seat Leon Mk 1. A nice late model should be possible. Same underpinnings as the Golf/A3 and even has the same dashboard as the A3.

The general concensus of the BR is that the A3 is a little overpriced for what it is.

Definately look at a Seat Leon, or if you don't mind a boot, the Toledo. At 7K you would be looking at a top spec, last of the previous model car. Even better, why not spend £5K on a 52/03 plate and pocket the rest... These cars are high quality, very close to Audi and lose much more money from new. As a second hand buy they are a bargain especially if you go to an independant dealer or private/auction rather than a Seat dealer. A 1.9tdi would be my choice - a little noisy but reliable and excellent econony/performance (mk1 leon/toledos tend to have the 110bhp slightly older diesel which has more power and appears more reliable over time than the newer ones)

The general opinion of the BR is that you should get a Mondeo. Regardless. :-)

If you got to auction there's no guarantee that you'll see the type or condition of A3 or Golf that you'd prefer. Quick check at Car Giant shows 24 x A3s and 71 x Golfs (30 more than they have Mondeos!) which is far more than you'll see at auction and at prices according to HJ very close to auction. You can get the keys to any car, check it out at your own pace and you can test drive before purchasing.

I agree with the comments from others on the Seat Leon, nice car, quite firm suspension. Depending on your badge sensitivity you also may want to consider an Octavia Mk II -£7K gives you a decent choice of 2005 MY cars if you don't mind a few miles on them. Better car than the A3 to many people but not the company car park kudos of the Audi or VW.

I'm presuming we are talking diesel here?

Get yourself a nice 130bhp Golf GTTDI - £7K should get you a decent spec last of the Mk4. pop over to uk-mkivs.net/forums/default.aspx and have a look at the stuff on there...

Usual things with these - check the service history (especially with regards to oil), look for body/alloy wheel damage etc..

I run a 150bhp 2004 53 reg GTI (diesel), with only 122K on the clock.
