Driving home last night in a downpour of sleet and high winds (and some of the best sheet lightning I've ever seen!) an empty wheelie bin standing at the end of a Farm drive was suddenly picked up by the wind and flew across the road inches in front of me. Had I been a second later It would certainly have inflicted a serious dent to my car, and where I wondered, would I stand if it had? Is it up to the house holder to make sure that such items are properly restrained ? Read more
Hi
If anyone is able to help I would greatly appreciate your advice.
My S reg Pug 406 LX 1.8 petrol (with 156000 on the clock) is starting to do my head in.
I know how to drive a car, but when it comes to repairing or diagnosing problems I get really stuck.
Everytime I turn the ignition off, whether I've done 2 miles or 100 miles, the cooling fans at the front of the car start to kick in.
The temp gauge is reading between 70 - 80 so the engine is not running hot. The fans never actually kick in fully, they just turn over in a feeble attempt to start up, but keep doing this for about 20 mins after ignition is switched off. This is resulting in a flat battery more often than I'd like.
I'm guessing that either the sensor/relays are knackered or the fans themselves. Any advice or help would be gratefully received (preferably in Idiots Guide language.)

Probably a very good move.
That is the outcome of a very significant percentage of my work nowadays. Nobody has the will [or funds] to get involved with repairing these over-complex cars.
Does anyone know a site where I can find a leage table of road surfaces in London.
I would nominate Greenwich. Read more
I nominate the Hogs Back (A31) between Guildford and Farnham (yep, Surrey).
Dual carriageway with 60 mph limit and regular posting of camera vans to detect the (patent masochists) who exceed it.
Very quick question:
The Scenic (1.9dCi) needs a 5W/40 synthetic engine oil.
Is the Quantum 5W/40 "PD" engine oil suitable? Have had a good offer, but pointless if I can't use it.
Cheers

A while ago i replaced a track rod and inner track rod end (the rack end) joint on a 306 estate (2001)
I had a few problems with not getting it tight enough in the thread and after a few weeks the steering was knocking again. I used lock tight on the thread and tightened it as much as possible and its been fine for 8months or so
The problem has now returned so im going to get it done professionally depending if its cost effective.
I was wondering wether a mechanic would tighten the track rod again or would it need a recon steering rack if its the inner thread thats the problem.
Anyone got any ideas of cost for this

yes theres a washer that should stop it unturning but that didnt work!
Hi,
I have a 98 1.5 diesel and it doesn't like starting after it's been sat overnight or after an 8 hour work day. It starts first time but it's very lumy and feels as if the engine is trying to jump out of the bonnet. This only lasts about 10 seconds or so and then ticks over fine. It also emits a blue cloud of smoke. Do you think it could be the glow plugs and hpw much would it cost for them to be fixed?

A TUD will smoke like a trooper if it's not getting post-heat.

Has electronic parking brake. Is this disabled at the caliper or just turn ignition on to release?
And do I need a special tool to wind piston into caliper?

Hi, one of the keys buttons for my 03 zafira is not functioning properly. I changed the batteries but still when I press on the button to open or close it won't work straight away, some times I have to press on it five or six times before it will work. Read more
Thats magic, Thanks guys, tried the simple one for me first, the card on top of the battery and that did the trick, it works every time now. Thank you.

Well the car was driving well and still does to some extent . Trouble is that oil has started leaking from the engine . I am scared as to what problem it can be because if its extensive I wont be able to afford to repair it . I was wondering if anyone could give me advice or a clue as to what it could be . The mechanic who sold me the car has checked everything and said all oil levels are to max, just the transmission oil is a little low, the leak was creating four small dots ( rusty oil colour) and this morning just to one spot , this is all occurring from the front of the car and ok . .......HELP
Given the recent thread (www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?f=2&t=59...7 ) {edited to include a space so that the link will work - DD} that developed into an interesting discussion about commuting, I thought I'd start a new thread about why people do spend a few hours a day just travelling to work.
My own perspective is that my wife and young children get to live somewhere nice, with everything they need locally (including both primary and high schools), where we even have policemen on the beat (sometimes on bikes, rarely in cars). The downside is that I spend 2.5hrs a day travelling 110miles (roundtrip to work). The advantage I have is that my employers are flexible, so I leave the house at 5.20am and am at my desk working by 6.30, so generally I leave at around 3.45/4pm and I'm home generally not later than 5.30.
However, I see my job as being short term(ish - probably 2 years) and will probably look for my next move to allow me to work from home. As my current employer pays home to work mileage, perhaps I can use that to try and convince them of the argument that I should work from home. But before that happens I need to make the applications I use accessible from home via a VPN or even hosted on the net...
So why do you commute? Do you both commute a long distance? Is getting a job closer to home likely? Or moving closer to the job?

The shortest answer to this thread is "ludicrous house price"
Anyone who has taken mortgage in recent years will probably agree.
And once you add kid's education (eg. private school etc.) on top of that, life becomes quite tough.
So, when both Mr & Mrs are working and kid(s) is/are in a good school, it becomes very difficult to move. Price might be cheaper up north, but Mrs might have no prospect there!
So, people will have to commute. Probably even more in future.
Widening of the motorways won't solve the problem. As traffic flow becomes better, people will start commutating over a longer distances!
good point Oldsock, i'l ki'der remember that next time i put my "errol flynn " out for the refuse collectors
