If its got the K series engine and its auto you will be very lucky if everythink is in order but then again it could be the exception. With K series engines you have to be very careful with cooling side of things waterpump failure can be disasterous as I know from my own recent experience and older engines tend to corrode internally and thats terminal it needs taking for a long test drive with a knowledgable person to check it out.

I'm a suspicious ole git.
Why?
In my experience, whenever somone applies pressure like that it's not to my advantage.

I'm pretty sure this is the Honda SOHC 16v unit which is bombproof. Easy way to tell if its a Honda engine is to see if the cambelt cover is on the nearside (Honda engines run "backwards" so are fitted the other way around in the engine bay) and look for a "PGM-FI" sticker on the inlet manifold.

A friend had the manual version of this car and it went on to cover over 150k with no more than a failed ignitor unit in the dizzy, and a couple of minor electrical problems.

Don't know much about these auto boxes though.

Cheers

SWMBO had a J plated 216Gti - it was a crackerjack engine, thrived on the revs just like a bike engine.

A friend of mine had a 216GTi of around J plate age and that was a very good car, quick and very reliable. However, according to the CBCB (details below) a 1995 model indicates a Rover with the K Series engine except in the case of autos which retained the Honda engine.

If it does indeed have the Honda engine then it could be a good option.

"Honda 'Swindon Civic' in tweed suit, but mostly with Rover's own 'K' Series engines and (Rover claims) better ride and handling. Automatic retained Honda's 1.6 engine and autobox with engine in front of passenger rather than driver."

So more than likely a Honda lump then ?

Yes it looks like it is a Honda. Had a quick Google search and found the link below which concurs with the CBCB.

"1.6 L Honda D series SOHC (Automatic gearbox only)"

Well the car was driving well and still does to some extent . Trouble is that oil has started leaking from the engine . I am scared as to what problem it can be because if its extensive I wont be able to afford to repair it . I was wondering if anyone could give me advice or a clue as to what it could be . The mechanic who sold me the car has checked everything and said all oil levels are to max, just the transmission oil is a little low, the leak was creating four small dots ( rusty oil colour) and this morning just to one spot , this is all occurring from the front of the car and ok . .......HELP
