Hi,
I have a 98 1.5 diesel and it doesn't like starting after it's been sat overnight or after an 8 hour work day. It starts first time but it's very lumy and feels as if the engine is trying to jump out of the bonnet. This only lasts about 10 seconds or so and then ticks over fine. It also emits a blue cloud of smoke. Do you think it could be the glow plugs and hpw much would it cost for them to be fixed?

Yes maybe those plugs best get them removed and heat check them to see if they glow, probably got 1 plug done thats why it's lumpy. good luck

And I would third it. :-)
Bet it's the one buried behind the pump. It always is! ;-)

There isn't one buried behind the pump on the TUD, only on the XUD.
They're all very easy to get at (deep 10 AF socket needed), don't lose the terminal nuts and fit Beru replacement(s).

If you have, or know someone who has an amp-clamp you can check the glow plugs very easily. Simply place the amp-clamp around the glow plug cable and switch on the ignition. The reading should show about 80 amps, as the glow plugs draw about 20 amps each. Be sure to do this before the engine has been started that day, and bear in mind that the current draw figure will reduce as the glow plugs heat up. If you only have a reading of 60 amps when cold then it's almost certain that you have one glow plug failed. If you only get 40 amps then you have two gone and so on.
Alternatively disconnect the glow plug cable and isolate each one in turn. Use an ohmeter to check the resistance of each glow plug by connecting your meter red probe/clip to the glow plug terminal, and black to battery negative. You should read about about 2 ohms for each glow plug, and any that are either very high resistance or open circuit have failed. Checking their combined resistances (all connected together) is not a reliable test, as one could be open circuit and you wouldn't necessarily know. This will save you from having to remove them to check them.....

My car has a very very lumpy tick over for about the first 10 seconds after it starts from cold.. It always starts first time but there is a big cloud of blueish smoke when it first starts. I have had new glow plugs fitted and that has made no difference. Does anybody have any idea what could be wrong and how expensive it will be to fix?

What make of replacement glowplugs were fitted and was the operation of the controller checked for post heat? Make sure the lug connections for the two heavy wires under the controller are tight.

From your description of the smoke it sounds like oil's getting in.
Valve stem seals anyone?

A TUD will smoke like a trooper if it's not getting post-heat.
