Insurance for 17 yr old - How much do you reckon? - drivewell
Oldest child turns 17 at the end of the month. Planning to put him on my wife's Punto 1.2 (8v) insurance. Car presently on a comp. policy, but would consider 3rd P, F&T if the difference was huge.

My wife's present policy (her and I as named drivers, both full no claims) is around 200 pounds / year.

Any ideas what we might be looking at in terms of premium - Anyone been there lately?

Will depend on how keen your insurance company is
NU quoted an additional £3000 to add 17 year old daughter to my wife's 1.4 Golf
Went to Elephant in the end, total premium about £700

Wife's 1995 1.4 Astra was quoted at £1,200 by her insurer, Budget.

Direct Line quoted £630 and allows daughter to rack up NCB as a named driver.

A few years ago my niece (then 21) was quoted £1200 for a Nova 1.3 SR. Her gran offered to give her her elderly MkII Escort 1300 (as she was giving updriving) - the quote dropped to £130! I have also heard of lowish quotes being given for 2CVs and old Land Rovers.

I remember paying £90 per month to Direct Line for insurance on my mum's 1.4 Peugeot 206 a few years ago when I was 18. Seemed extortionate at the time but then this went up to about £150 per month when I got my own car - a 1995 1.0 Peugeot 106

You could try Liverpool Vic tinyurl.com/39avz6
They offered fantastic deal for adding my 17 yr old L daughter on a 1.4 polo

Unfortunately I expect it will be much higher for a male.

Direct Line charge me £500 TPFT for the Rover 214 with my wife and 18 year old son who are both on provisionals as named drivers. They are also accruing NCBs in their own right.

Very likely double - rate may be lower for a provisional licence though.
Pass Plus may help.
Changing from fully comp to third party may not reduce the price much - the risk isn't to the car they're driving.
Just shop around and be honest in all quotes (at least with those that you will sign :-) )
Make sure they have breakdown cover that includes accident recovery.

My daughter has her own policy on a 1250 Punto (as a learner) for £700 a year tpf&t with very reasonable excesses from Quinn Direct, oddly it was cheaper than adding her to an existing policy for the same terms, and she is accruing a NCD (so far, fingers crossed).

Why not copy in wifes current insurance cover details online and add your sons as well with confused .com and they will give you a range of quotes from , they say , 97% of UK insurers .

Takes a quarter hour or so but saves a lot of time form filling for individual quotes.

I just used them last week , as of today I have changed from More Than to LV for my Honda Accord, in the process saving myself £160 for the same cover.

Highly recommended.
