What's the maximum no claims bonus I can protect?
After over 50 years of driving and accruing 22 years NCD I unfortunately had a minor motor accident. Although when I took out the policy I provided proof of 22 years NCD my insurance company would only accept a maximum of 9+ years.
Tesco Insurance have now reduced my NCD to 3 years which appears severe, is this normal practice?

If you don’t protect your no claims bonus when buying an insurance policy, then you risk losing some or all of your discount if you make a claim. If you have a significant NCB history, then it’s likely that this will reduce, rather than lose your discount entirely.
