00 2.0 suspension & smoke from vents - Andy hhh
Hi I have a 2.0 xantia estate V reg Feb 2000 from new.
Once when the suspension went suddenly hard it was the levelling sensor that caused it, Now the back has got harder and harder and bad on bumps, it was ok with heavuy load on but now its all the time.
Is it spheres which I don`t think I have ever had, car has done 265000miles

Also smoke can suddenly pour out the vents when heater on!!! Driving along, opened both windows and it looked like the car was on fire or I was smokingt too many fags!!!

Also not blowing very much at all but I have read on here that it could be the pollen filter as that was changed once at 5000 miles svce. The last I had at a proper garage...

just had new fan put in. the smoke or fog really clouds up the windscreen even on cold.

New spheres; heater matrix and pollen filter will probably make a new car of it.

Unfortunately; a new car would be cheaper.

That must be something of a record for a set of spheres (if they are original).

the smoke could be the heater motor resistor starting to burn out , does the fan run okay ie all speeds, it could also be pollen filter but that would be unlikely to bo smoke

Thanks for quick replies. Spheres are original. would I need all six?

The smoke is not burning smoke but a "fog" or steam! I was told it could be leaking matrix and water on outside instead of inside the rad system getting into car??

Maybe a radweld type stuff may cure it?

Where is the pollen filter? Can it be removed or does it have to be replaced? Or can I bodge it and put holes in it to free the air flow.

new fan works fine on all speeds.

If it just the back suspension gone hard, then only the rear 2 outer ones need doing.

The fog or steam is the worry. If it is the heater matrix then the dash has to come out. I've not done one but it is a labour intensive(thus expensive) operation. Do you have to top up the cooling system? does the steam smell of anything? does it feel a bit greasy?

Generally speaking if you have air-con you will have a pollen filter. It is behind the trim under the dash on the passenger side.

I would sort out the steam first, the other two problems are comparatively minor compared to that.

I've changed the pollen filter on mine, there are two methods of removing the cover.
The usual website(Puravent?) has removal instructions which were wrong for mine.

If you decide to repair post back with your findings and take it from there.

Deffo needs a new matrix - if you have got to steam out the vents stage then it is well past radweld or similar. New matrix is only £30 - trouble is fitting it takes 10 hours +. Given the number of cheap Xantias around I'd bin this one and put 200k on another one :-)
