I have a 2000 S80 2.9 SE auto with 60000 miles. After ten minutes engine stopped when I drive off the gearchange from first to second produces a "prolonged" click. This noise is not the same sound as a clashed manual gear but is more like a something slotting into place. All other gearchanges while the car continues are silent including any other first to second changes until I stop the engine again. The symptom at first only occurred when the car started from cold, i.e. once a day, but now happens as described after each engine stop. Any comments would be welcome. Also does anyone know of any fault code readfer that I could buy for this car please? I do have a Vadis CD for routine maintenance but cannot access nor analyse the cars computer. Thanks. Read more

I'm having problems with my 1997 VW SharanAuto. It won't change from second to third gear unless I'm doing excessive speeds and won't go into fourth at all. Has anyone got any suggestions / solutions.

Evening all.
Got a bit of a problem. As you may or may not know, my mate bought an 02 plate Audi TT 225 a few months ago for around 16 and a half grand.
Ok so far. But, he's self employed and, since purchase, work's slowed down a fair bit leaving him with £750 monthly payments for the car and the insurance. (It's a group 18).
The tricky part comes now:
* He's with BCT finance who have said that they want £17,900 as a settlement.
* Part ex value of the car is between £14,000 and £14,800 with private being around £15,000 to £16,500 but obviously he can't sell it privately.
* He's had the car nearly 4 months.
He was looking at Civic Type R's at around 11 grand but I've told him he'd be better off getting something much, much cheaper. Alas, I haven't been able to talk him into a Focus!
Of the settlement figure of £17,900, any part-ex will be subtracted from that figure so if he gets, say, 14,500 part ex, he still owes BCT £3,400. and apparently, most finance companies won't let you carry over that much of a shortfall over to your next financial agreement.
Is he knackered?
Any wacky, zany, or otherwise crazy ideas are very much welcome as are sane ones.
Your help would be very much appreciated on this gents.
Many thanks, as always,
Adam

My younger sister has lost her one and only key to her R-reg Ford Escort (I think it is an LX). I suspect it is the type that has an immobiliser chip in it, since my 1996 Fiesta does. Luckily (or maybe not) the car is unlocked. Has anyone got any ideas as to a cheap way of getting her mobile again, or is the only way forward to call out a mobile locksmith? I do know of a reputable one locally but suspect she will lose 2 limbs to pay for it. Any helpful advice very gratefully received! Read more

How do Vauxhall do keys for Fords?
"vauxhall, yes, everytime, right back to "L" reg. Fords.......narrrr" - better?
If you take a door lock apart you will be able to read the code yourself. I'm not sure you'll be able to put it together again though! For code reading look here www.fordscorpio.co.uk/doorlockbld.htm

Hi there,
I'm frequently getting grief at a particular roundabout in rush hour traffic and want your opinions. The best by to explain the problem is by showing you an actual photo of the problem which is here:
i2.photobucket.com/albums/y35/Stevenkuzzy/marlow.j...g
I approach the main roundabout in the righthand lane at point A. I wish to get to B which is a single lane road after the mini roundabout. If I was to try to merge into the queue at point D I would block up the entire inside lane of the main r/about, some people do and it does cause grief plus freezes up the entire system. No one will let you merge in further on thinking you are pushing in.
I do in fact go all the way round and have a free run right up to point C where all hell breaks out and I'm the cause of road rage for pushing in.
What should I do? Both options are legal but It's becoming a real problem to face this junction each day. No other route is possible.
I have added traffic to this photo and have left road signs clear on purpose. There is more traffic than shown in rush hour and I am not the only one who does what I do!!
Any suggestions?
Thanks.

Hi
Ever since i've had my 1996 Golf GTI the Trip computer display on my Speedo has never been illuminated which hasnt been a major problem as you can squint and see it ok and was never a priority, but now the Mileage display has gone too and its annoying.
Can anyone tell me how to sort them, is it a simple fuse, or will it be a Bulb and ive gotta take the whole frikkin thing out to replace ? Read more
We were all novices once, I was lucky to have many years ago a father who did not mind looking over my shoulder to stop me causing too much damage.
If you do proceed get a Haynes manual, disconnect the battery, get a socket set for the steering wheel nut, a smallish headed 4" long Philips screwdriver, Allan key to remove airbag and a pair of thin nose pliers.
Only problem I had was to undo the steering wheel nut whilst holding the loose airbag. It is very easy to break the electrical connection between the two which will mean a new airbag!
How safe are "Thule" bike racks when mounted on roof in an upright position on long (70 mile+) motorway journeys? I can carry the bike in the boot but have to take both wheels off as well as the saddle to get it to fit in, which is a real pain.
Spoiler on boot prevents using a boot kit.
Cheers. Read more
It depends on whether the rack has been TUV approved. Those are the best since TUV are extremely rigourous in their testing.
Hi All,
Just wondered if anyone can give me a few pointers on getting a first car for my better half. We've got the meagre sum of 1k (absolute maximum!) to spend. She's after something small, Likes the Ford Ka (thinks it looks good), but I'm thinking that we would end up with something problematic at that money. I was thinking a better choice would be: Felicia, Fiesta, Proton Compact, Micra, Kia Pride, possibly something French but am put off by the thought of constant bills (is this really the case?).. It would be her first car, so keeping insurance low would be helpful.
I know this is an ambitious email, but are there any pointers to look out for when looking at when looking at cars beyond the obvious (i.e. under the bonnet) - I'm not very technical, but I'm determined not to lose out by missing something serious that a bit of nouse would allow me to spot!
I saw Top Gear a while back and they managed to get their hands on ridiculously cheap cars that garages wanted to get rid, they had been brought in as part-ex. Is this a feasible route to just getting something basic and driveable?
Many Thanks

To further add to mrmender and Xilenos posts:
'81-'91 Polos do have very heavy brakes but don't rust that
readily (in a different league altogether when compared to a Fiesta
or Nova). Like X says, if its left untreated it can
get quite bad, but there are plenty out there where rust
isn't an issue, so don't accept a rusty one.
Quite agree Roberson the only plce they go realy badly is where the fuel filler pipe and inner sill meet. My Daughters 88, i would not say is a especialy good example but has never been welded all i've done is put new break discs pads runs realy well we had probs with the carb too, but was easily solved.
Now she wants a Corsa 'cos they look nicer!

Well the problem has solved itself - the car has been sold.
I'm not disappointed, I was not looking to change until the autumn and I haven't decided what I want next.

Sounds like could be output shaft speed sensor. Whatever, I think its going to have to go to an auto trans specialist.
