.... you saw advertised a car with 18K on the clock but was on its third owner?

I would check it out but not necessarily ratty.
Depends upon first ownership. For example, could have been a "demonstrator" for the first couple of thousand miles.

Yes, I would.

What age is it and where it being sold? Honda main dealer? Private sale? Car supermarket? Or in other words, how likely is it that the seller is keen to get rid of a troublesome car rather than having a genuine reason for sale?

Known CDTI problems from CBCB:
- turbo failures
- heavy oil consumption...no low oil warning light...so needs regularly checking (but was this one checked regularly?)
- mid 30s fuel consumption of 2.2iCDTI
- problems with electrics
- ABS and radio speakers
- water ingress into rear wheel bearings

At worst, it could have a recurring fault that three successive owners have been unable to fix. At best, three owners found something about the car unsatisfactory enough that they were unable or unwilling to keep it long. Unless I could determine with certainty what that 'something' was, I'd be inclined to look for another one to buy...

Yes it sounds like it should be getting a new owner at Battersea ie its a woofer....

IIRC it is 18 months old. I didn't pay too much attention to be honest since I was immediately put off by the number of owners. It is at an independent trader, not Honda dealer.

It could have had a private plate as that will trigger the owner count, my Porker has had 9 owners but at least 3 were plate changes.

Personally I would like to see the V5 to see the last owner's details and then phone him to see why he sold/traded it. It could orginally have been a demonstrator, then the later owners could have either died, lost their licence, changed jobs or found it did not meet their requirements.

On the other hand it could be a dog or been involved in an accident and then sold on.

Even if the reasons for 3 owners was genuine then a lower price should be obtained due to this.

I became the third owner of my car at 18 months old with 18k on the clock. Pre-reg then private owner from delivery mileage, then me.

What's the problem? Presumably it's still under manufacturer's warranty.

Change of registered keepers does not always mean change of ownership (i.e. could have stayed within the family or corporate group).

Come on - Why worry about the mileage - its a Honda, the last three owners only used it to collect their pensions and a quick trip to the sweet shop for their Werthers originals before they suffered a stroke after too many cream cakes down the Darby and Joan Club......

Seriously I would not be too worried - check the service history with your local Honda main dealer and ensure it is still covered under warranty.

I bought my Civic four years ago at two years old as third owner , it had only 8000 miles on the clock and no service book.

The local Main Agent checked its history , were satisfied it had been looked after and gave me a new service book when I had it serviced with them.

They honoured the warranty when I had a problem with passenger electric window motor in the first year and thats the only problem I have had .

As a CDTi estate it cannot be earlier than Feb 04 registration (I have the first diesel estate I saw and it was registered on 2/3/04). This means it will have Honda warranty until at least Feb 07 and possibly longer - as long as it has been serviced!

There is a cure for poor consumption but you have to badger them!

I am the third owner of my car but it has only done 4000 miles and is 10 months old.
It was a pre-registered car that the first real (second actual) owner bought and just didn't like - no technical reasons at all.

I can easily see me selling it before 18000 miles as a) I don't do many miles and b)I just like a different car every 18 months to 2 years....

Well the problem has solved itself - the car has been sold.
I'm not disappointed, I was not looking to change until the autumn and I haven't decided what I want next.
