Next time you see a Vauxhall Corsa have a look at the wheel arches; they're made of black plastic. My daughter backed her Corsa against a post hard enough for the off-side rear wheel arch to be torn off. In most cars this collision would have meant at the very least a paint job costing costing hundreds. In the Corsa you just screw the wheel arch back on. Brilliant! Read more
I am trying to fit a new cam belt to my 1.8 20V Passat. After much struggling, rounded hex nuts etc I have managed to remove the crank pulley and outer timing belt cover, but now I cannot compress the tensioner. It is the piston type, which is supposed to be compressed by putting an 8MM hex key in the tension roller and, according to the Haynes book, apply steady pressure in an anti-clockwise direction until the piston is compressed, then put a 2mm drill (or similar) into the hole. Well I can't get it to shift, even with lots of pressure. Am I missing something, doing something wrong...any help or recommendations would be very welcome. It says that it needs to be >30 degrees c. I have tried warming the piston holder with a hot air gun a bit....should I heat it more or is there some other trick? Read more
apparently the temperature has to be above 30degrees c for this to move so you are on the right track
Why are they blue?
Why not a different colour?
Why are they blue throughout the world?
It's not being a good day at work - if I can solve this one, it will make a small part of my life better!

I think we are over thinking this. Traffic lights etc where made red because (at the time) this was the easiest colour to make other than black - think early football strips, which were all black, white or red.
I suspect blue was chosen because it was the next easiest colour to make, and stood out from the others.
Hia guys
Am very new to this so you will have to bare with me!!
I have a 2000 Renault Clio. When i turn the wheels it squeels at me and on one occasion black smoke been seen coming from them. Someone has said it could be a leaking CV Drum, whats this and is it terminal!!!
Typical woman i know but need help
Thanks Read more
This lady comments that "black smoke has been seen coming from them" are you sure or are you going too fast or some thing. We need a bit more description. Its the squel from the tyres or under the bonnet. Where exactly is the smoke coming from. Try turning the wheel to full lock whilst stationary and give us some feed back. However a visit to an independant garage does sound in order. Have you checked the Sterring pump fluid level. Look in the Hand book for guidance. Regards Peter

I have a Ford Focus 1.8 TDCi late 2002 and wonder if using the Air Con has any effect on MPG. Guys I've spoken to seem to have a mixed view. Anyone know the correct answer ? Read more
You will use significantly more by carrying a passenger or two but I am sure that does not keep you up at night. Just use the aircon and be comfortable.
Carse.
Morning all
Dont know if anyone can help.
My VW Passat 130bhp 2.0L S alarm works fine in all respects, however when I sent the alarm there is no audable warning that the alarm has been activated, can this be changed or is the alarm set up this way in the factory, the reason I ask is that I just want the extra peace of mind that the alarm has been set/activated.
I did ask in the local VW dealer the other day, the response was ''I haven't got a clue.''
Thanks in advance for any suggestions Vwman Read more
Alex and Dox thanks for the replies.

Morning all, was reading through the archive posts and noticed one that said that the indicators are supposed to flash when locking car using remote. Mine don't appear to, I have checked the troublesome micro-switch on the bonnet catch (as per previous postings) and this works fine so it must be something else. All alarm functions and locking functions work fine. A very minor issue but one of those niggely ones!
Any ideas??? Read more
"are those resistance values directly from the heating elements themselves? if you're going through some wiring and connections they could be giving you a false value/problem"
The resistance values are directly from the element connectors on the mirrors.
Hi
I got rid of the old Laguna and got myself a shiny E46 BMW 318i SE. I am really pleased with it but it has one strange habit. It starts great, pulls when stone cold like a tug but when the temperature gauge hits the top of the blue mark the car acts like the accelerator pedal is disconnected. It does not respond at all for a few seconds and then goes immediately back to normal, driving perfectly right up to when normal driving temperature is reached. I have been caught out a few times pulling out of slow junctions to find that I am trickling along at 5mph with a bus in my rear view mirror approaching rapidly. Luckily the seats have been scotchguarded.
It is in the BMW dealers being looked at under warranty but I have the feeling that (after telling 4 people my story and e-mailing them so that it was readable only to find the mechanic telling me that "that's not what I was told on my sheet") unless a diagnostic tool reads out a code that they can look up, they haven't a clue where to start. Closest guess when road testing it with a mechanic (alright vehicle technician) was that it may be the air-mass flow sensor.
Any of you guys seen this before? Any ideas would be appreciated. Read more
CTS is coolant temp sensor.
VTC is presumably for Valve Timing Control (BMW Valvetronic).

Coincidently, there's one at the shop where the Opel is today, getting the cvs done.
I'll have a look, and get back to you!
