Mr Fluffy

I got in my car today at lunchtime and started the engine and everything was fine. About 2 minutes down the road, I noticed that both my LCD temp display and LCD Odometer display were both just a series of dashes.

On top of that I had a gearbox light on frost warning light on and a battery light on. Both my speedo and rev counter we both reading 0. Every now and again my rev counter would bounce up to the current engine revs and then settle back down to 0.

Later that day, I drove the car home and noticed that now, there were no extraneous lights on and the rev counter worked flawlessly.

My LCD odometer is still only showing dashes and the speedo is not working.

Once home I checked the battery with the engine off and it read 12.85v; fairly normal I thought.

I've yet to check any fuses, thought I make a post of my symptoms first.

Any help appreciated. Read more

My wife collected her Swift yesterday and I had my first trip out in it today. First impressions are fair enough.

I still think the ride is a tad firm and not at all like a Ford Ka, with which I have seen it compared but, all in all, a nice small car. I would agree with the road test reports on the engine, which is that it doesn't seem like an engine with 102 bhp. It seems like it needs a shove at times, although it is quite relaxed at 80 mph, with the rev counter at only a little over 3000 rpm. There is noticeable tyre noise which would be tiresome over a long distance. Pushing it above 80 sees the speed increase gradually but it isn't willing to go over 4000 rpm in top gear. It seems hard to believe that it would reach its claimed top speed of 112 mph without a very long open road ahead. At 70 mph, attempts to accelerate quickly will see it kick down and the engine isn't a sweet revving unit at the top end, as it gets a little raucous above 4000 rpm. It red lines at about 6500 rpm but I didn't get anywhere near that.

The handling is nice and sharp, although I feel the steering is a little light and could do with more feel as the car picks up speed. The important think is that my wife likes it. I have told her to keep those shiny alloys away from the kerb! Read more

I have been advised by the local dealer to take the car in when the tank is as near empty as we can get it, so that they can remove the tank to carry out checks.

I see what you mean about level 5. How the hell are you supposed to park in the dark with no reverse lights?

Evening all,
Minor glitch, but the aircon recirculate button on my ´99 Astra 1.8i CDX has stopped working.
The aircon is still going OK, not supercold, but no different to the last year.
Any ideas? Read more

Could well be, I´ll check.
Thanks for the advice chaps.

I have a 2000 Audi A4 TDI. Recently (unexplainably) the raido volume has become barely audible. The reception is good but the max volume is very low. I have been thru the manual and tried all the obvious stuff!! Any ideas??

Much appreciated,

I would have thought yours is a bit new, but there is a notorious problem with the volume controls on audi concert radios.

The problem is that every change in volume is written to a bit of eeprom in the cpu of the radio, and the eeprom is only suitable for x,000 writes, after that it starts forgetting the volume. typical symptoms are radio being very quiet or very loud, and small adjustments on the volume dial causing big alterations in actual volume. you can do a temporary resurect by heating the radio apparently.

If that is the issue then the solution is either £100 replacing internal components or a new radio.

DP

The car is a 2000 Mondeo 1.8 TD (one of the last of the Endura DE engined mk2's)

The problem is an odd low pitched "chattering" noise coming from the cambelt / aux belt(s) area of the engine. It's most noticeable at idle from outside the car, although you can pick it up inside as well. As the revs increase, the pitch increases slightly until about 2,000 RPM when it disappears into the rest of the diesel noise.

The car was supposed to have had a cambelt and tensioner change as part of the deal when we bought it last year, but knowing this dealer, and having found other things that should have been picked up in their supposed 128 point "safety" inspection, I'm now not so sure.

Noise is not affected by switching accessories such as the air-con on or off.

I know it's difficult without hearing it, but any ideas?

Cheers in advance

After having had my Mitsubishi Galant Estate 4WD tested a couple of times normally on rollers, I remember this thread. One thing I think that came out of it was that most brake testers have a 4WD mode. I watched the last time it was tested using this and it was most interesting. Instead of just putting the front wheels on and driving them together and then back wheels the same, it seemed that the rollers were set to operate in reverse directions, so that one wheel went forwards and one backwards so no actual rotation was applied to the drive train. Thus each brake was tested, as the rollers were reversed to make each wheel individually go forward against the brakes. I imagine the performance of a disc brake is slightly different in reverse.
I'm certainly grateful that I didn't have the problems mentioned in the thread, and congratulations to Nsar to have carried it through to a conclusion.

My 2001 TDI 130 with 88k miles has started making a slight whistling noise, I assume from the turbo. It starts at around 2000 rpm when it appears to whistle quietly at a constant pitch before stopping. The whistle does not get more pronounced as the revs rise. Does anyone have any thoughts? Incidentally, the car has an AA warranty until August. If this is turbo related am I likely to be covered?
Thanks in advance

At times I can hear a slight turbo whistle from my 53 Skoda Superb when driving with the windows down.(almost the same oily bits as the Previous Passat/Audi A4)
On an old Passat 1.6TD I owned (1990) a few years ago the only turbo whistle I heard was when the exhaust failed, I didnt even realise it was blowing as the engine made sooo much noise.

I had a similar problem. The engine would speed up but no power. I discovered that one of the small diameter vacuum pipes had fallen off one of the units over the LH side by the battery.
