Find a friend with hayfever. Drive to a big sunny just-mown
field. Throw friend out of car. They will sneeze. Bring them
into the car. If they stop sneezing once the engine is
running with fans on, you have a filter. If they keep
sneezing, then you don't Simple, really. :-)

Funny, but I nearly write just that; having never suffered with hay fever before (just cat hair allergy) I have been sneezing my head off for the past two weeks I guess courtesy of surrounding rape fields. Until the rain came this weekend and dampened things down, the only sanctury was my V70. Heaven. Sneezing stopped each time within a couple of minutes of closing the door and starting the climate control to ingest fresh air.

Hi all,

I'm looking to get a Primera GT ('96-'99 model) in the next month or so and am looking for hints and tips on what to look for when buying.

I'd like to stay within the £1300-£2000 bracket, which there appear to be enough of on autotrader, but most have mileage around the 100k mark.

Firstly, any other options to the Primera GT? Needs to have similar performance, look fairly decent, cost around the same and have reasonable insurance and running costs. Doesn't have to be primera size, but i will be doing around 20k miles a year, on motorways mainly so don't want a micra size car.

Secondly, is there anything specific that i should be checking for when viewing these? I know the standard things to check, so i'm after more model specific points.

Thanks in advance for your responses Read more

Excellent cars, hope it all goes well for you.
I bought an M reg one almost 5 years ago with 110k on the clock and took it upto 165k before selling it last year. Excellent car. just change that oil & filter every 5k using a decent oil (I used 10w/40 semi synth) and I'm sure it will go onto & past 200k. Mine was still on it's original front shocks & wheel bearings when I sold it (had bought it from a friend who'd had it since it was 2 yrs old)

the minor thing I found was that some of the interior switch gear started playing up. nothing too serious that a couple of hours of work would sort out.

Try coming onto the motorway in 2nd gear and watch the rev limiter cut in at 8k......

cheers,
Stu

Hi Gang,

We sold a customer a one year old car recently which developed a gearbox fault and broke down. It was covered by the manufacturers two year unlimited mileage warranty including breakdown. The car was fixed by their local Mercedes dealer within 24 hours.

The customer has now written to us wishing to reject the car and wishes a refund. They say they have only travelled 5 miles in the car in the 4 months they have owned it.....

Any thoughts? Read more

Statistical outlier

Maybe I'm cynical, but do you think it likely the car has been clocked and they are trying it on? I can't see that they can have any idea what it's like if they have driven it for 10 mins in four months.

I've read elsewhere that when traffic police have not got more important things to attend to (eg. road accidents), they will "issue 20-25 tickets per shift" for non-working lights and fog lights on inappropiately.
Obviously the 20-25 tickets per shift (when they've got time), is such a drop in the ocean that the message doesnt get through that "you can get done for this".
It is the assumption that 'the police are not bothered' that leads to people to breaking these laws, thinking they are being unfairly picked on when they get done for it, and the odd few whinging to the press about it.
People have the "it only happens to other people" mentality; I wonder how many people read the Plymouth Today article, then put their fog lights on next time it was dark but not foggy?

Regulars may remember my recent rant about foreign lorry drivers.

Maybe it's just me, but today at work I was nearly taken out by yet another one (Portugese this time), pulling out of my company car park. He was overtaking a bin lorry on the wrong side of the road way in excess of the 30 limit. I followed him and was quite pleased he was delivering to my company, as I was able to report him officially rather than contacting a transport company.

The irony was he had a very prominent 70km/h sticker on his window, which was so close to me I could read the publisher's name and address.

Incidentally, the Irish company I complained to never got back to me, so I've reported them to Shropshire Police. Who probably won't get back to me either.

I know I shouldn't get so wound up about it, but WHY is it getting worse?

Can't we put these idiot lorry drivers and chavs in Saxos into their own republic and let them burn off their excess testosterone without endangering everyone else? Read more

1. The police have simply given up 'policing' the roads now. No wonga in it for them so they're not interested. If you fail to renew your car tax disk by one day and your properly registered you'll get an automatic penalty by post. If you stick false plates or even foreign plates on no one will bother you. So its now rule of the jungle on the roads and lorries are just bigger.

2. I recently found out their is a bonus scheme for lorry drivers saving fuel so braking can cost lorry drivers money. I find this fact absolutely terrifying.

How much should I be paying for a new evaporator for air conditiioning system in Vectra SRI? ie. how much for the part and how many hours labour to fit?

this will be the 7th time the car has been to the same garage - it has already cost getting in for £300 just for them to finally work out what is going on! Any advice much appreciated! Read more

Thanks for the replies so far.

Some further details incase it helps...

It's a Z22se engine (SRi 150).

During the visit which resulted in the garage telling me that it was the evaporator, they definitely removed the lower dash/console - the bit with the gearlever, handbrake etc because they haven't put it back together properly (one screw out). However I'm sure they didn't take out the top bit of the dash.

Also they've messed the fan/heater around because the air flow is much reduced on the various fan settings although the fan sounds as if it's spinning as hard as ever.

I shall be ensuring that the garage (a Vauxhall dealer) rectify these "extras".

Questions: is it possible that in trying to sort the air-con out they've effectively caused more problems - e.g. due to pressure testing or similar?

I'm being told that the evaporator is £300 plus £300+ to fit it; which they're not charging due to having already charged me to "fix" the leak previously (re-gas, then new air-con pipe). Is £300 reasonable for the part?

An aquaintance of mine has just been offered a well paid new job part of which is a car allowance. However due to a v poor credit history he is concerned that convential providers will not be prepared to deal with him.
He obviously does not want to go back to his new employer saying he cant get credit so can they provide him with a car (which will be required for extensive travel). I am also concerned that if the job doesnt work out he will be left with an expensive car he cant afford.

Can anybody recommend a scheme which might suit him ?

Thanks folks useful discussion - was able to guide him and to his credit he's agreed a company supplied vehicle based upon the demands of the job, high mileage and personal cost - a far better solution all round.

I need to replace the pollen/microfilter on my E46 BMW, Euro car parts lists 2 filters for this car....one is listed as "standard" & the other is listed as "active carbon for Air conditioned cars".
I'm confused by this as ALL E46 BMW's have Aircon as standard.

Does anyone know what is fitted as standard to these cars?

Can I fit either type?

The fact that something is std. in the UK does not make it std. in all countries. The UK has traditionally sold hi-spec cars mainly because the greater % of vehicles sold in the UK are company-owned in some form.

My parents are looking to replace my mum's somewhat elderly Audi A4. They don't have any particular cars in mind but a list of requirements to find the best match.

The biggest problem with the A4 is the low seating position. Although they are both reasonably fit and healthy, the low seats combined with the twisting movement to get out of the car is becoming increasingly difficult. So a car with a higher driving position is essential (they definitely don't want a proper 4x4 type vehicle).

The car must be automatic (mum hasn't driven a manual in over 25 years) and preferably diesel. It needs to have four doors for carrying passengers.

They also own a small Seat which is used for most of the short local journeys so the replacement would be mostly used for longer cross country trips (mostly A roads as my mum dislikes the speed of motorways and my dad dislikes being told he's going too fast at 65mph).

Purchase price is not a major issue but running costs in terms of tax, fuel consumption and servicing are. Neither have any interest in gadgets such as sat nav, cruise control, etc although air conditioning is a must.

I'm sure there will be more wants/needs over the next few months but from what they've come up with already, are there any suggestions where to start?
