Mileage/Trip computer Display gone. Golf - marty69
Hi

Ever since i've had my 1996 Golf GTI the Trip computer display on my Speedo has never been illuminated which hasnt been a major problem as you can squint and see it ok and was never a priority, but now the Mileage display has gone too and its annoying.
Can anyone tell me how to sort them, is it a simple fuse, or will it be a Bulb and ive gotta take the whole frikkin thing out to replace ?

If you can see it when you squint, it sounds like a backlit LCD, so you will need to remove it and change the bulbs.

I have just replaced the bulbs on my GTI of the same age. I think trip, clock and warning lights are 1.2w and the two night illumination bulbs 2.2w. You have to remove the steering wheel and whole display. At the same time I would replace the two night bulbs 2.2w (as well as the broken ones) as mine were working but very blackened.

P.S. Golf Mk 2 and Mk 3 dash bulbs are not interchangable and both 1.2w and 2.2w come fitted into their own plastic contact base.

So fairly big job for a novice like me then ??

We were all novices once, I was lucky to have many years ago a father who did not mind looking over my shoulder to stop me causing too much damage.
If you do proceed get a Haynes manual, disconnect the battery, get a socket set for the steering wheel nut, a smallish headed 4" long Philips screwdriver, Allan key to remove airbag and a pair of thin nose pliers.
Only problem I had was to undo the steering wheel nut whilst holding the loose airbag. It is very easy to break the electrical connection between the two which will mean a new airbag!
