  According to research from Auto Trader amongst nearly 21,000 UK motorists, outdated myths are still prevalent, with 40% still believing that men are generally better drivers than women and that old drivers are the worst (100%), followed by young drivers (83%), van drivers (82%), taxi drivers (70%) and bus drivers (30%). BMW owners are deemed to be the worst drivers on the UK’s roads according to a massive 45% of respondents, followed by Subaru drivers (23%), Mercedes-Benz drivers (22%), Land Rover drivers (20%) and Porsche drivers (18%), with ‘Sunday drivers’ classed as the worst type of driver, followed by ‘rush-hour drivers’ (46%).

  Comma spokesman Mike Bewsey suggested routine vehicle maintenance was a dying art. Referring to young motorists, he stated: "They are perhaps the first generation of drivers who don't have the benefit of parents who would do the basics to their car, like checking oil, religiously." In related motoring news , previous research by Comma found nearly half of all vehicles in the UK were running with insufficient lubrication in their engine.

  Ford has joined forces with Norwich Union to provide one year’s free comprehensive motor insurance through Ford Insure, and one year’s free satellite navigation from Smartnav, to eligible customers buying a new Ford Ka Design, Fiesta Style or Streetka. Young drivers are most likely to benefit, as insurance premiums for those under 25 can cost thousands of pounds. The campaign is available for motorists aged 19 and over on the Ka Design, and 21 and over on Fiesta Style and Streetka models.

  Penalties for uninsured drivers 'should be tougher' 5 Dec 2008 (News)
  Spokesperson Malcolm Tarling said: "The penalties do not reflect the seriousness of the crime and do not act as a sufficient deterrent and this has been the case for some time." He acknowledged fines could play a role in tackling uninsured drivers, but stated they were not a solution on their own. Mr Tarling suggested a more appropriate penalty would be to take an offender's vehicle and have it crushed. This comes after research published in the Institute of Advanced Motorists' magazine found young male drivers living in highly populated areas were most likely to take to the road without car insurance .

  It may be that if they are implemented they come accompanied by a drop in traffic collisions involving inexperienced drivers, which in turn could reduce the cost of car insurance for the demographic. "What we'd like to see is young drivers getting more experience before they actually sit their driving test, rather than taking their driving test and then, in effect, learning to drive," stated Malcom Tarling, spokesperson for the ABI.

  Government plans set to be introduced could see drivers save on their car insurance policies in future. The Times has reported that the Department for Transport (DfT) would like to see motorists who have picked up their licence to continue to take classes and improve their skills.

  Drive like a girl’s sister brand insurethebox went live in 2010 with the aim of using telematics to provide incentives for safe motoring. It has analysed more than 600 million miles of customer driving and found its average young motorist is nearly 72% less likely to cause an accident after the first year. Whilst young drivers normally improve with experience, around 35% of this reduction can be attributed to the influence of telematics.
