This has been a great car in all ways. Recently, after even a short drive I have noticed the front discs feel hot to the touch. I jacked the car up and turned the wheels by hand. The rear wheels are fine but both front wheels are heavy to turn. I assumed both front calipers were sticking. However when I took the car in for a brake test on a rolling road (Kwik Fit) I was told that everything was a 'pass' including the 'brakes binding' test. The MOT is not due till the summer. Should I just keep on driving and not worry? Driving an import, I am rather anxious about anything failing suddenly, because there may be a delay getting spare parts. Read more

Yes, it was only imported last year, but not everyone wants to work with an unknown import. But thanks for advice, will ask around local garages....

Hello All,

Due to other road users using the pavement/dropped kerb to area to do 3 point turns the pavement has worn away meaning access to property causes vehicles to scrape underneath. Do the council have a duty to repair the pavement for the home owner to gain access without vehicle damage? Read more

Engineer Andy

If it's adopted, report it to the relevant council. Any damage it causes can then be claimed if it's not repaired within a reasonable time.

I don't know what 'reasonable' means....

. Didn't know about the gearbox though, that's good to know thank you. is the ZF 6HP a precursor to the ZF8 that goes into a lot of modern high performance BMW's?

Yes. The ZF 6HP in its various guises was used by Aston Martin, Audi, Bentley, BMW, JLR, Maserati, Porsche, Rolls Royce.....and many other powerful cars which needed a sturdy reliable gearbox. It is sealed for life for normal use. Over 7 million made - very few go wrong. ...

Hi,

May be looking at an Audi A4 Avant B7 (mainly due to petrol and no turbo etc) but it has a cassette player. Normally I wouldn't care too much but I am just thinking that if I go for it I would consider changing this out for an Audi unit most likely with CD player at the minimum.... Read more

Hi all, looking for advice. My car passed its MOT less than two months ago, only advisories were a couple tyres.

Driving yesterday with the wife and 7 month old baby in the car, and the wheel got dragged underneath the car as the wishbone was so severely corroded it failed and snapped. This caused the car to slide on a main road, luckily we were all okay.

My question is what should I do now? What is the law regarding this if anyone knows?
Obviously the garage is at fault for passing the car when it shouldn't have been passed - that amount of corrosion can no way happen within 2 months. Read more

"If your vehicle has passed but you do not think it should have, you need to report this to the DVSA within 3 months of the test if the fault is a corrosion-related problem"

Hi, I was wondering if i could please get some advice on my current situation i find my self in and where i stand. Back in May last year i received a reminder NIP from the metropolitan police for a using a mobile phone while driving. It seems i did not receive the original letter dated in June 2022. The reminder was sent on July 17th. I emailed them requesting evidence as i could not recall my self driving on that day. They sent me a video clip some weeks later of a cyclist filming my wife while she has the phone on her lap in stationary traffic. She had been touching the screen so she was using it. On the 25th July 2022 they sent me a video clip which the cyclist had provided to them. I made 2 visits to my local post office to send the form back and add my wife's details but on both occasions post office was closed for that whole week. On the 8th September i decided to send an email to the original correspondence giving them my wife's full details as the driver. I received a response saying that they would not accept this in an email and i must send in the form by post. i replied back asking them to send me a return addressed envelope which they refused. During this time my wife was ill and i just let it slip by and forgot and heard nothing more. Fast forward to Jan 4th this year, (7 and half months after the offence)I received a Single Notice Procedure and have been charged with failing to provide driver information which means 6 points and probably around £1000 fine. The charge sheet states I did not provide the drivers information which i did, All be it it was by email but details were provided. After going through everything and speaking to a few solicitors who want to charge me an arm and a leg I have decided to plead not guilty on the basis that I sent them the information by email. also Iam not to sure what the time limitation would work in my case with regards to the 6 months from date of offence. Either way is there a way i should go about this and what to plead in my defence. Thank you Read more

"So now we are expected to pay for stationary and return postage to accept a fine and points. "

Seems quite reasonable, everyone else does, perhaps you are some entitled special case who feels that the ordinary rules of behaviour don't apply to you? Welcome to the real world, and tell your wife not to use her phone when driving, that's another rule that applies to everyone.

There don't seem to be many recent threads on this topic. Are there any recommendations for refreshing 30-year-old fabric seats - there aren't many stains or serious marks, or damage, they just need brightening up a bit. Non-smoker's car too. Preferably without wetting the seats at this time of year ! Read more

Engineer Andy

If I've got any leftover when I give my flat's carpets a clean (when the weather gets a bit warmer so they can dry out a bit quicker), I might use the remainder of my HG carpet cleaner (about £7 for a 1L bottle from Tesco) on my car seats.

That make seemed to get good reviews generally, as does the Karcher 'Puzzi' carpet cleaner I'll likely hire (last time I looked it was costing about £35 - £40pw) to do the job. I'd need the extra upholstery attachment though.

Seeing as I missed the Subarus (all sold!!!!) I was pointed to a 2ltr non turbo Audi Avant B7 which has also already sold. My usual pattern.

I have been trying to find NA 2 ltr petrols as I do have a 3 hour round trip to the office once or twice a week and for larger cars the 1.6 and 1.8 feel that they be tiring to drive. But, lots of little trips mean a turbo may be best avoided.... Read more

There are 2007 Octavias with the 105 HP 1.9 as well that are worth a look. These are still classed as decent smart cars really. I had a 68hp version in a LWB Transporter and it was more than fine....

I'm not a frequent pork-pie eater, but I enjoy one as a convenient portable lunch when necessary. Everyone is welcome to their dislikes and prejudices, but I have not yet suffered after eating one. Mind you, I took the precaution of marrying a lady with a degree in nutrition, who still manages my daily intake .... :-)

It is a year now since the advice given in the highway code was to give way for people to cross the road. My experience is that it has been a waste of time and I rarely see it complied with and when I have sometimes has resulted in pedestrians put in a dangerous situation. Whatever no great harm has arisen and as time moves on the whole thing seems forgotten Read more

<< If you go to Cyclecraft, the manual of cycling technique published by HMSO it refers to two positions. >>

Bromp, I am perfectly happy with your Secondary Position, which is where I was used to riding in my cycling days. And I would recognise the Primary position in Central London, which is a closed book to me.
