The headlamps of my 22 year old car have become cloudy. I’ve buffed them with toothpaste which has improved them but only marginally. Any recommendations of how to best get them clear would be much appreciated.
TIA. Read more

These old w208 models are good old soldiers. It’s really only the rust that kills them , mechanically pretty solid .

My Caddy has been reluctant to start for a while now and I am looking to replace the battery with something more heavy duty. So far I have looked at Halfords (as there is a branch in town) and Ebay, but am struggling to find a battery with higher figures than the one in the van (these are 78Ah and 740A).

So the first question, are those figures higher or lower than the more learned collective would expect?.... Read more

All common rail diesels have glow plugs, but are more likely to be used for dpf regeneration than cold starting . On some models , these glow plugs have become really expensive as they incorporate a pressure sensor also .

....Another handy tip, always go for Bosch or NTK ( parent company of NGK) glow plugs, there are a couple of other brands around but frankly the quality is somewhat lacking.

Hi All, hope everyone is well. So stupid question, almost too straight forward and pointless asking, just thought I'd get some advice. I've always protected my NCB, however, I've been told I shouldn't bother by a few friends and family. I only have 4 years, been driving for 4 years. Cost of living and all that, my xc70 will cost me £950 with AXA. The Skoda Octavia £1200 last year with RAC. Should have shopped around. However, if I don't protect them this time around, £537, so big saving. I put a separate quote through with no NCB and it came up £980. So should I just not bother protecting them, run the risk of not being involved in an accident and save myself £400 or so. If I make a claim, then obviously I'll be spending the same as I would be more or less if I protect them. Just wondering whether under 5 years it's worth it if it means saving 400 quid. I guess if there is an accident I could always pay up front and not claim, if they're not protected would I still have 5 years NCB next year if I don't make a claim?

"If you have protected NCD and you have a claim then the premium gets loaded anyway, you just get told we have given you a xx% discount on an inflated price."

It's surprising the number of people who don't realise that though - not on this forum of course! If someone gave me a £ for every time I've had to explain it doesn't mean your premium stays the same I could retire early......

We ordered a new MG4 last September and have been waiting for delivery since then. The estimated delivery was December but we were told it would probably be before that. It obviously hasn't arrived and we are now in January. We paid a deposit which we were told was non returnable - £250.

The deal we were offered was very good, a good (and correct) offer on the current car, and also some cashback.... Read more

There will be a proposed delivey date and not a contractual delivery date. Walk away and you lose that "deposit" and the px value

Hello, I was supposed to be buying a car tomorrow and I have set up the insurance policy to start tomorrow, however the seller has told me he cant sell it till tuesday now as he is waiting for his new car. I cant change my insurance policy start date online, and I am not sure what to do? Is it a issue that I have taken out the insurance a couple days early, I am obviously not driving it until i have bought it. Please advise and help. many thanks mitch Read more

If you're worried, just drop your insurers a note stating that due to seller issues you've not yet taken ownership of the car.

Edit: Around 35 years ago I did buy a Austin Maxi that would barely run, gave the the guy £20 for it, turned out the airfilter was blocked solid, changed the filter and it ran like new....

So I recently had a conversation with Thames Valley police and it seems that the dealership I bought my car from have apparently failed to get the paperwork to the dvla or the dvla have fluffed it.

I am now also receiving an mot reminder for a car I've never owned that would be due about the same time as I thought I was going to need my current car squared away.... Read more

I think the MoT reminder is a red herring; they're produced by MoT stations and not DVLA. ...

HI, I ordered a Napa NPAAFB027N from National Tyres and they have fitted an Exide AGM EK600 60ah. I'm just after a bit of advice as to whether there is any difference in quality. I'm thinking I will contact their customer services as the order is clearly printed with the Napa battery details and 5 year guarantee and it's a different battery fitted. Thanks. Read more

Exide are original equipment supplier to Vag models . Never seen a napa battery on a VW . Your choice.

Many VW Group models have Varta batteries as OE.

I do a lot of city driving, probably around 50/70 mile a day and occasions I’m down to London from Scotland once/twice a week - I'm wondering whether I should go for a 2020 rav 4 hybrid or a 2021 plate 320d xDrive MHT M Sport 5dr Step Auto for best mpg - what would you guys suggest?

Cheers

Maybe look at 320i instead. Mine did an easy ave 45+mpg. With petrol round here a good 30p ltr cheaper than diesel.
