Couldn’t understand why I had such poor beam whilst driving at night on Monday. Checked on the following morning and the lights were covered with a salty grime . My Monday journey had been several hours on a well salted motorway which had thoroughly dried out throwing dried salt into the atmosphere and over travelling vehicles.
The nighttime poor beam I experienced was almost as if I was driving on an unlit road with only sidelights. I temporarily put full beam on that got me home ok-no oncoming drivers flashed-so my lights were really filthy.
This was just one days motoring. The car had been hosed over on Sunday . Read more
Back in the mid '80s I had a Vauxhall Senator and Vauxhall Cavalier SRi which both had wash/wipe which was very effective but somewhat fragile - I've subsequently had cars with high pressure washers but not as effective as my old Vauxhalls
A firm that I work for for over 18 months now allows it's employees to use a privately patrolled car park, I've used it since being employed by them in May 2021. In June 2021 I put my then car on my personal number plate and duly informed them. As and when required I also updated them if I used either my wife's or daughters cars.
In June last year my then car was written off, but I replaced it in July and had my personal number plate allocated to the car in August. However, in December 2022 a penalty notice was placed on my car for not being registered and entitled to use the car park. When I bought this to the attention of my manager, he said that he would look into it. He came back a few days later with the answer that "My registration number had been entered wrongly, but ignore any proceeding action"... Read more
Thank you for replying. My manager said to ignore them. If they persist I will take the matter up with the area manager, he's the one that manages all of the contracts. If this car park company only checks the car park every six months or so before realising that my employer or a clerk has inputted my registration number incorrectly, then they're not really worthwhile retaining, are they?
Should the MOT laws be changed so that vehicles are checked less frequently or is the MOT just another tax on those who get their vehicle serviced regularly? Read more
(Triumph 1300 bought at auction by a student syndicate) we took it in for an advertised "Free Safety Check" after purchase (we were young and naive).
They gave us a VERY long shopping list of "safety issues"......, but of course failed to identify the serious issue with the vehicle...
I have a strange but worrying problem with my brakes. It’s happened 3 times now all in different circumstances.
1. Sudden stop on a motorway. Brakes applied took the car from 60 ish down to 10 ish then it seemed to slip, pedal went straight to the floor subsequently revs were on max as I caught the accelerator but clutch was engaged so no dramas there. Released the brake and reapplied and the car stopped. Immediately took it to Kwik Fit for a brake check, explained the issue but they checked it over and suggested everything checked out fine.
2. Was at a junction. thought I could go but a speeding car in a cross road made me think twice. Applied the brakes and again it over shot slightly. Exactly the same phenomenon, but as I was at a snails pace felt more like I was skidding on ice. Road surface was fine. This time I took it to the local garage and they took the brakes apart and basically rebuilt them on my instruction but couldn’t find an obvious fault. No problems since.
3. About 6 months later, again trying to stop the car this time pulling into a car parking space on quite a steep decline. Over shot the space due to the same lapse in braking. Fortunately nothing in front of me. Tried to repeat it in the same car park…safely but couldn’t. Never the less checked brakes myself (fluid, callipers, pads, discs), nothing seemed out of place. No lights on the dash. A complete mystery.
Each time the sensation is like it’s skidding and/or the ABS is trying to avoid wheel locking but doesn’t feel right as the car is virtually coasting into a potential collision. Seems to be when either the car is on a decline or is dipping forward through braking force. Applying logic it seems like the ABS is kicking in and not disengaging. Doesn’t seem to happen at higher speeds, but if it’s not the car correcting itself why would all four brakes slip? Any feedback would be good Read more
2.0 tdi. The oil indicator was replaced as light was on on the dash, as well as the indicator fuse when didn’t resolve the problem.
Our BMW 320d keeps throwing up an intermittent drivetrain warning, which hasn't been able to be dagnosed accurately. Rather than spend more money and time on it I just want to sell it on.
Ideally I'd just trade it in but there's no car of interest near us and I don't want to risk driving more than 50 miles, so I'm considering trying one of these "we buy your car" type websites. Chances are I problably won't mention the issue in the hope they might not notice it and they'll later either repair it or sell it on. I'm wondering if anyone has done this or am I being a cheating old so and so and won't get away with it? Read more
I sold my wife’s Volvo XC60 which had several expensive to fix faults but fortunately no warning lights through an online buying service run by a local dealer chain. I made sure to polish it then took it in on a wet day so they couldn’t see the rust along the top of the windscreen or the scratches in the poor quality Volvo paintwork. They paid top money for it and I walked away laughing. This particular dealer chain would happily sell you a car riddled with faults, so my conscience is clear. No post American and later Chinese ownership Volvo product will ever grace my driveway again.
Good to hear from you again after some time without your posts!
So I've insured and taxed the car, it's a long story but I forgot to get the new keepers slip when I went to see the owner and mechanic fixing the car. The v5 has been filled out though and in the post. I have photos of the v5 all pages and it's insured and taxed. I'm just waiting on green slip with royal mail and the V5. So can I drive it if I don't have the green new keepers slip, but have a photo of it? And if it's taxed and insured? Surely it's just like driving a hire car until it's properly in my name? Thanks ??
Is there a knack to undoing electrical connector for lambda/Oxygen sensor in an Astra K 2016 I undid the tab but it didn't pop loose. Didn't want to force it and break the clip. Read more
Yes it's a grey tab will try that thanks.
I have been employed by a company for just over 18 months who have access to a car park that's monitored by a private firm. I have from the beginning of employment registered my private number plate with them, updating their records whenever I alternated with my wife or daughters car. In December I was issued a ticket on my car with the private registration for not being entitled to use the car park. When I took the matter up with my manager, he said that the registration number had been entered wrongly at some point and to ignore any communication.
That was also the advice given to another work colleague who was sent several letters outlining his impending fines until they gave up. However, he was a agency worker and his car is probably worth no more than £4,000 I on the other hand am a full time employee and my car is worth over £20,000.... Read more
Yes, my personal plate includes a 0. Personally, I would have made allowances for any transgression between a 0 and a O, but then again, I'm not a parking patrol warden who's probably on a good bonus if he or she books as many cars as possible.
I feel more at ease now and I'm now just waiting for the next step.
I bought this car last July from a garage. Nearly 70,000 miles. Since the cold weather it has refused to start. The ABS and steering warning lights come on and the car is undriveable. I bought a warranty so it went back to the garage straight after Christmas. They did a few other things but said this was just what happened with modern electronics and maybe it needed a new battery. The battery is fully charged and the problem still exists, yesterday it was 2C and it wouldn't start. I'm furious, I paid £6000 for this car and I am effectively stranded miles from a bus route.
I'd be grateful for any thoughts. Read more
As the fault and subsequent failed repair occurred within 6 months from purchase you have the right to a further repair or a refund.
"The Consumer Rights Act stipulates that dealers will only get one chance to repair or replace the product, so dealers can’t make multiple attempts to fix a problem unless otherwise agreed. If they fail to remedy the fault in one attempt or within a reasonable time period, you’ll be entitled to a full or partial refund"...
You need to modify the model of car you have. Hyundai did not introduce the "N" badged cars until 2019 the first being the i30 N. The i20 N came along in 2021....
