Re the Non-working car.

HJ says, "There is now an ‘all new’ front wheel drive BMW 3-Series: (link to carbycar entry)"

I think he might mean BMW 1-series. (Which makes sense as the reader was asking about A-Class and 1 series.

Easy typo to make.

Surprised the feature doesn't mention fast food delivery drivers and others who do a job for their employer in their own vehicle and claim mileage, so should have business insurance.

Re : No connection?
Though my car knowledge is not exhaustive, I did work in IT for many years and built my first home computer from a kit. The story, though I'm sure the writer is relaying what he was told, makes no sense at all. Firstly, if a 'software update' can fix the matter, albeit for a time, it sounds like interference, the software correcting the issue. If the units are being removed and sent away for repairs, it suggests a hardware issue (insufficient sheilding to prevent interference). In the latter case, it's a manufacturing or design fault. But if the 'software change' fixes it, it suggests the physical shielding is okay.

Hi all, though I would write with my thoughts on this great little car that I took delivery of at the end of March last year.

Well, it's just come back from its 40,000 miles service today. It's brake pads are only 10% worn, and the original tyres on the front are still at 3.7mm.

I have refuelled it 74 times since taking delivery, and it is thus far averaging 68.63784 MPG over this period or 25.0585 Kilometres Per Litre.

Driving is about 70% motorway and the rest A&B roads.

It encourages a relaxed driving style, and is very quiet if you stay within the speed limits.

By no means is it quick, but I guess it is not designed to be. Gets me from A to B in comfort with no stress.

Build quality is solid, and having been caretaker to many cars over the past 30 years, including BMW and Mercedes I would rate this as every bit as good.

The Ioniq has been faultless so far, and I will let you know my further thoughts after another 40,000 miles. Read more

I'm not familiar with the Ioniq hybrid, but looking at the Hyundai website there appear to be 2 versions, 105 and 140 BHP. Which do you have? It also appears to now be discontinued, so the only way to get one now is to buy used.

Took delivery of our brand new Honda CR-V Hybrid 4WD yesterday, which replaced our 2015 1.6 diesel 2WD. First impressions are very favourable - it's smooth, comfortable, and feels somehow more solid, almost like our Saab 9-5 that the previous one replaced. Round town, it feels very lively with instant pickup, probably due to the lag-free response of the electric motor. On rural roads, it rolls less than the old car. It's going to take some time to get to grips with all the bells and whistles though! SWMBO hadn't completely got to grips with the old one, so this will be a steep learning curve for her, although to be fair it can be left in what in camera terms would be point-and-shoot mode.

Strangely enough, after just under 150km, ours has currently settled at 43.5mpg, or 6.5l/100km in our local currency ;-)

At similar mileage, our ancient Mk1 Focus auto estate, appox 300Kg lighter, did 37.6mpg. (circa1000 mile brim-brim observation). Not much progress, methinks. A saving of 30 gallons/£180 per annum plus whatever the difference in VED is for the average 8000 mile a year driver. This would take umpteen years to erode the huge price premium for these double engined machines. They don't make sense to me....

Mr Red

I recently asked my insurers what effect changing the second driver would have. It upped the price from a retired ex PSV Ambulance driver with unblemished record, to a mid 50's woman with one record of a hit years ago. It upped the price by maybe £20 in £200 ish. So I said well what if I didn't have a second driver? that upped the price by maybe £10. neither ladies live at the same address and have their own car. The car is low mileage anyway.

After questioning the logic of this they just (verbally) shrugged, that is the way the statistics tell them! Statistics, schmistics. Bias in data for AI is a well known problem, but not to insurance companies!... Read more

The main reason for failure of aluminium radiators is electrolytic corrosion.

The usual cause is anti-freeze which is "worn-out" IE -not changed frequently enough so the anti-corrosion chemicals are dissipated and weakened. A secondary cause is using a weaker than 50% anti-freeze/water mix which fails to give the corrosion protection needed....

Suzuki’s policy was to have two A segment and two B Segment cars, Celerio as a rational buy, Ignis the emotional option. Same with Baleno as the sensible one, Swift the fun one.
In reality, the sensible, rational cars are being outsold considerably by their counterparts with Celerio and Baleno apparently being dropped.
Vitara and S-Cross are different sizes, so no real clash there, and Jimny sells in tiny volumes (because of availability) that it doesn’t cannibalise sales from the two larger SUV’s.

Accompanied my daughter into a Mini (official dealer) today for an aircon check. 'Pick it up at 5,30' said the Service Adviser. Daughter's a nurse, and because of shifts asked any earlier please? Reply: waiting is priority in the morning, it won't even go in til the afternoon'. Then silence.

Like all franchised dealers, standards vary. We have had 3 Minis over a period of time and also have a 2-year old BMW, and my dealer in Leicester has been very fair.

The current Mini has a warranty and not long ago had a replacement seat occupancy mat (air bag light on) as well as a seat belt that was not recoiling properly. Sorted very quickly and efficiently under Mini warranty. Also had a major fault with the X3 (differential whine) diagnosed on a Thursday, out of the workshops with a new diff the following Tuesday. ...

The in tank pump is the lift pump to the main hi pressure pump driven by the engine . There is a gauze filter on the bottom of the tank pump. Might be worth checking. Also have you changed the main diesel fuel filter?

Yeah recently had it serviced I’ll get that pumped checked thanks very much for your help
